ransom1538··on 27 years ago, Steve Jobs said the best employees focus on content, not process
"Less than 50% of new hires make it through probation. Staff that survive all have the same attributes: excellent sales ability and focused determination."

Sales is cut throat. They take in new people to extract all their first rate contacts (friends family). Once those are sucked out, they don't need you.

ransom1538··on GCP Incidents
"On December 1st, at 8:52am PST, a box dropped offline; inaccessible. And then, instead of automatically coming back after failover — it didn’t. Our primary on-call engineer was alerted for this and dug in. While digging in, another box fell offline and didn’t come back"

This makes no sense. A machine restarted and you had catastrophic failure? VMs reboot time to time. But if you design your setup to completely destroy itself in this scenario, I don't think you will like a move to AWS, or god forbid, your own colo.

ransom1538··on HTML hacks that shaped the Internet
 That works?
ransom1538··on PHP 8.3
Yeah not at all. Try taking a python2 app then upgrade it to python3.
ransom1538··on PHP 8.3
I coded php for years. Generally speaking, php teams (using smarty + composer) are faster. They don't have the ci/cd drama of java. PHP is made for the internet (unlike python) and is fast (unlike rails). It also doesn't suffer version drama (python2 vs python3).
ransom1538··on Children, left behind by suburbia, need better community design
Yeah. 1980s. Try watching reruns of love boat for 1 hour with interruptions of dandruff shampoo commercials. Give it a shot as an adult, then imagine being 10. You will tear your eyes out. Sure, flip one of 10 channels to Golden Girls, you will try to hang yourself. Books? lol. Your school hands you the the book Jane Eyre. As a 12 year old boy, you might not relate to 19th century English countryside drama. Kids back then had fucking nothing. They went outside. Youtube is a god damn game changer - I wouldn't go out either.
ransom1538··on Sam Altman, OpenAI board open talks to negotiate his possible return
Boards fire CEOs all the time. It is literally their only job. BUT, the curve ball was all the employees wanting to leave (most likely to msft). So, THEN, Ilya has a change of heart, since, openai will no longer exist. But just like all relationship "breaks" - its fucked.
ransom1538··on Streamlining CI/CD Pipelines with Code
Dagger looks far more confusing and weird than the docker compose example.
ransom1538··on Terraform Cloud Pricing Changes Sticker Shock
Honest question. If you need to pump data into datadog from your cloud, why not just stop doing that, and use the cloud tools? Datadog isnt' creating metrics. The metrics are already on your cloud provider (gcp, aws, etc) -- AND all these providers have ways to view metrics. Why do people pay 20k per month for data dog? They dont' want to use GCP metrics explorer? Same with TF cloud. You can just setup a jenkins job and do all the features TF cloud has in a few hours. Why pay TF cloud? Are people confused? I must be missing something. I worked at startups that thought all metrics need to be in datadog, but they didnt' understand they can just use metrics explorer. You can't even use sql to create graphs in datadog, it's awful.

IMHO If you are serious, dump the metrics into bigquery/redshift and start doing sql like an adult.

ransom1538··on I-10 closure in California prompts state of emergency
Sacramento has I-80 and business 80. Good luck.
ransom1538··on Jury Finds Realtors Conspired, Awards Nearly $1.8B in Damages
Just sell it / or buy it yourself. It isn't hard by any stretch. You can use a $200 listing broker on a MLS site. That is the big secret. Then it gets on zillow, redfin, etc automatically.
ransom1538··on Autism and responding to authority (2019)
You are a disagreeable person. I love working with disagreeable people, but I avoid them after work. On Saturday, I don't feel like being lectured to on how hamburgers are supposed to be cooked. Other guests find it rude to called out on their own occupation.

Search doctors that actually did research papers on the thing you want. EG mohs surgery.

ransom1538··on Strong static typing, a hill I'm willing to die on
When I hit ctrl+save, the code should be instantly ready to test, less than 200ms. Waiting for 30 seconds to see code is an ETERNITY to people that code fast, 1k lines per day. I have been on teams that wait 5m to test code, what a waste. Fast feedback loops in code are critical, just like design, or anything important. Types seem like some weird religion, the people that use them cannot be talked out of it.
ransom1538··on VeraCrypt: Free open-source disk encryption for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
Has anyone seen legal cases involving hidden partitions?
ransom1538··on Burning money on paid ads for a dev tool – what we've learned
Take a lawn sign. Paint it white and black. In it, just put your domain and your uri. iamaretardbuyingads.com/test1 <- just put this in your lawn sign. Test a lawn sign vs 2k a month google budget. WELL, I have tried this. The lawn sign wins.
ransom1538··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
I have never. Once. worked somewhere that could afford splunk. But I have used it on trail many times, very cool.
ransom1538··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
rsyslogd strikes again.
ransom1538··on Why Socialism? (1949)
> "Says who? The only "requirement of capitalism" is that individuals are allowed to have ownership rights."

This was extremely powerful @legitster. For some reason this cleared up economic theory to me. These threads get lost in worker rights, but, that has nothing to do with capital. Capital is about ownership rights. You should be allowed to own things and means to your own production. Socialism is about taking these rights away, the debate is which.

ransom1538··on Show HN: Keep – GitHub Actions for your monitoring tools
temporal is for managing events. How is it related to ci/cd? Generally curious.
ransom1538··on Cuber: Deploy your apps on Kubernetes easily
ArgoCD is meh. Its a UI over your k8s clusters. What happened to us is sre/devops types just use k9s or the console. The devs could not be bothered to log into argo. They just merge, and code gets deployed. They don't hang out on argo. With 5k+ pods, the UI doesn't even work. So it isn't designed for large systems which makes it further weird.
ransom1538··on Cuber: Deploy your apps on Kubernetes easily
>> What does "Deploy on Kubernetes" mean?

It is one line of code.

kubectl apply -f k8s/deployment.yaml

ransom1538··on I don’t want to grow my freelance design studio into an agency
If you are cool with $12 USD an hour: it is the place to be.
ransom1538··on Ask HN: What's the Situation with YouTube-Dl?
What about docker? Seems perfect for this. Something like 'docker run youtubedl ... ' https://hub.docker.com/r/mikenye/youtube-dl etc.
ransom1538··on Gov. Newsom declares state of emergency for southern California
Yes. They also wouldn't sell you 20 boxes of toilet paper for a hurricane.
ransom1538··on Paying consumer debts is basically optional in the United States
Reminder. There are states that protect your home from judgements: "exempts homestead property from levy and execution by judgment creditors". Medical bankruptcy should be expected and planned for - as you age it will be difficult to get health insurance. Move to states that will protect your home.
ransom1538··on I feel like I made a mistake investing professionally into Flutter
Android to iOS is like React to Cobol. If you were a plumber using android you might know more about Android than a iOS developer.
ransom1538··on I feel like I made a mistake investing professionally into Flutter
"you won’t have difficulty in learning X, just take a few days in learning X"

It isn't 2020 anymore. No. No, one is going to hire someone that is going to learn "react on the fly".

ransom1538··on Harvard University encourages grad students to go on food stamps
In the nine states that responded about SNAP benefits — Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Washington — Walmart was found to have employed about 14,500 workers receiving the benefit, followed by McDonald's with 8,780, according to Sanders's team.
