ranit··on A Manual for Creating Atheists: A Critical Review (2014)
> people generally don't choose a faith, they choose a community and set of religious practices

People generally don't choose a set of religious practices either. They are either born in that community or "convinced" to belong to it. People don't often have a choice between one or other "community and set of religious practices".

irrational indeed :-)
ranit··on Learn X by Doing Y – A project-based learning search engine
Nice idea. Hopefully gain a traction.
ranit··on ImHex – A Hex Editor
This looks a much better title and match.
ranit··on Fucking, Austria changes name to Fugging
More likely, only 20 years.

> The argument underneath this comment

Keep in mind that the comments order changes in time and your comment may not stay above the comment you (tried to) point.

ranit··on Linux on iPad
It was not Microsoft, it was IBM that “gave us” commoditized hardware.
ranit··on Scientists discover two new mammals in Australia
Interesting. Could you point to some information on this topic?

> and most people will need a dongle/adapter

Micro HDMI to HDMI cable is included in the kit.

ranit··on How to waste your career, one comfortable year at a time
>> Someone needs to write ...

And skip “comfortable” in the title.

ranit··on Fuck You Sunday
Off topic: Are there more professional hunters than hunters than hunt for hobby? Curious how did you pick hunters profession to compare to software engineering.
ranit··on How popular media portrays the employability of older software developers
> ... (in Germany) ... instead seek to let them go once their expertise is no longer valuable and hire someone already experienced in the needed stack then repeat

Interesting. I thought Germany's labor law highly discourages this. Isn't "It is easier to divorce than to fire someone." a German saying for your tough labor law?

ranit··on Eastern European Movies
>> North Macedonia is missing from the list

It seems there are only old (before 1990) films there. The list of the countries is from that time: Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia.

ranit··on How to manage HTML DOM with vanilla JavaScript only?
>> very small number of UI experts who are tasked with making sure non-UI folks can build front-ends

This looks an excellent approach.

>> you need to hire at least one person with enough knowledge to cut through the bullshit and build the right tech stack.

How do you ensure that this person will "build the right tech stack"? There are myriad of possibilities to go astray.

ranit··on Effective C: An Introduction to Professional C Programming
Thanks. Fixed it. My mistake.
ranit··on Effective C: An Introduction to Professional C Programming
>> What is going on with the sudden profusion of books on C?

21st century C is 2014(?) and Understanding and Using C Pointers is from 2013, so it is not exactly sudden profusion.

Edit: Using C Pointers is from 2013

Hmm, I never get any notifications on news.ycombinator.com on desktop or safari on iOS. Am I reading HN wrong way? :-)
ranit··on Google recommends all North America employees work from home
What is the benefit of delaying until a country reaches Italy’s levels? If Italy’s measurements are considered proper at the current levels of the outbreak, why not be proactive and start earlier?
ranit··on Tesla X parts that had to be replaced after 400k miles
The article mentioned which repairs are done for free - warranty or good will.
ranit··on Rotary Cellphone
Thanks for the information. I didn't know. A nitpick: this is not "morse" [code].
ranit··on The Amazon Premium
>> and now we have all this cloud formation ... code to manage

The cloud formation code is (likely to be) much less than your application code. ... and if your intention and need is to have couple servers, then you don't really need any infrastructure code. If these cases, yes bare metal is much cheaper and (probably) better option.

ranit··on The World Wants More Danish TV
NYT is one on the short list I don’t mind paying for.
ranit··on German parliament passes bill allowing banks to sell and store cryptocurrencies
>> we should come up with a new short term for cryptography

Or neither of them should be shortened because these are compound words and the meaning of the first "hidden, secret" is too broad to represent any of its compound derivatives.

ranit··on Today’s Top Tech Skills
> I can only imagine tech companies would be more than happy to lead us to a future where software engineering is similar in this regard to other engineering disciplines. Perhaps this is what happens when a field matures, and since software is maturing, it will become more and more like this as the time goes on.

Actually software engineering had been like that for years in (distant) past. Most operating systems and compilers (that mattered for businesses) cost significant amounts. Not to mention access to computers.

It is said that Bill Gates' access to shared computers in his private high school [1] gave him advantage that very few people at that time could have had.

ranit··on Nim 1.0
You are right, thanks for the correction.
ranit··on Nim 1.0
> ... something unique I like about Nim, using `func` to declare pure functions (and `proc` for others)

FORTRAN has this distinction since the beginning.

Just don’t go there if you don’t like it. The net is huge. If there is no demand for something it will disappear eventually. There is no need to demand “stop making” ... just because someone feels “tired”.

ranit··on Sicily's farmers are looking for innovative alternatives to traditional crops
> lions used to live in Greece

Lions didn’t disappear from Balkan Peninsula because of the harsh climate, people wiped out them.

ranit··on The BS-Industrial Complex of Phony A.I.
Good observation. This has happened with the word robot for many years. It is AI time now. :(
