randomopining··on Mushrooms communicate with each other using up to 50 'words', scientist claims (2022)
Being able to work with others for the common goal of survival increases evolutionary edge
randomopining··on What happens when people don't understand how AI works
Why is the word grass 5 letters instead of 500? It's because it's a short and efficient way to transfer information. If AI is able to improve information transfer that's amazing
randomopining··on Ask HN: I don't want to work in software anymore. Where do I go?
Work hard when you want and build your domains. Don't stress about work, it's not worth stressing. Know your worth and bring that worth to the table when it's time to talk about raises etc.

I've thought the same thing. But software pays well, is fairly chill, and when you contribute to a big project you naturally build a position of value.

randomopining··on Sleep is essential – researchers are trying to work out why
I feel like a different person sometimes. And going to bed even 1hr earlier makes it generally much higher quality.
randomopining··on Bored of It
AI is just another abstraction. It's not like a senior Java dev can implement LocalDate.now() or CompletableFuture.await()
randomopining··on Do viruses trigger Alzheimer's?
Important to take certain antioxidants and supplements after. Plus whole good food. Focusing heavily on good sleep and rest (so hard). And doing some level of exercise, but even just starting with walking.

I had a post viral effect after Covid. But maybe 2 months. Then I finally took it easy with working out and it went away.

randomopining··on Is Ketamine Neurotoxic?
What happened to the other 3?
randomopining··on Is Ketamine Neurotoxic?
Really ironically all of life up until 30 is kind of following a general script that's handed to you. And that kind of lets you get out of your own head, in a lot of ways. Then when you're ~30 and you have skills, you have some resources, and you understand pitfalls of life... there isn't much more of a set script left except the wife + kids + white picket fence script. And it takes some effort to figure out how/what your autobiographical script will be. (writing this as a 32 year old who hasn't figured it out)
randomopining··on Is Ketamine Neurotoxic?
You're on point. Really if you look at all the religions and creeds that have stood the test of time, they all kind of shift focus away from satisfying your ego so much. It's so easy for the mind to rationalize this or that as a failure, given enough time to neurotically brood. Even if you're actually in a very good spot in life.
randomopining··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
Yeah same here. Somehow these latest today by T have gone overboard and struck a chord. What an absolute bozo he is.
randomopining··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
When did they say you can't read or watch? The same video producers on Tiktok can move to the multitude of platforms that are allowed. They can produce the exact same stuff.

The ban has nothing to do with the material, it has to do with the platform that is used to distribute and curate it. CCP by controlling the algorithm would allow it to do exactly what you say, at the push of a button.

Your comparison to Putin's Russia falls very short.

randomopining··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
What if, by nature, any type of conspiracy information is much better at hitting dopamine centers and attracting viewers than the "real" news can ever be? What if PBS could never come close to what misinformation can do and who it can attract...
randomopining··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
So what if a conflict breaks out and the CCP essentially use TikTok as a pathway directly into the brains of millions of Americans. Let's say they tweak the algorithm with a button press to create confusion and public discord when we should be united to protect taiwan.

That's a possible tool of disinformation.

randomopining··on TSMC begins producing 4-nanometer chips in Arizona
Marginal cost added probably isn't that much. How many manhours does a mac take to build?
randomopining··on Who killed the rave?
Man sugar hill is such a good spot. I only went there one time for Marcel Dettmann and Patrick Russell but it was sick.

Maybe i need to go to those different outdoor ones

randomopining··on Who killed the rave?
Yeah it's such a sacrifice. Many of the acts come on at 1am earliest, but usually 3am. That's getting home before 6 if you're lucky and then the whole next day is wasted.
randomopining··on Who killed the rave?
It's probably what you've said. I think perception changes, all the different venues and different types of music were once exciting. Then your brain forms the patterns and isn't as excited by x,y and maybe only z elicits a reaction.

Then you become more and more a morning person, so in the evening you aren't even that hyped up and your brain is already trying to call it a night.

For me something like standard 4x4 techno has become so formulaic that it doesnt interest me as much

randomopining··on Who killed the rave?
I'm not sure if stuff changed or maybe i'm just older. A lot of those parties seemed so mysterious and exciting a couple years back for me. Now it seems like the same old stuff month in and month out. Most DJs kind of have their shtick, and there's also this kind of standard left field rave sound that a lot have seemed to adopt. Kind of like the Resolute roster.

it's also very hard for me to rationalize staying up until the main act comes on at 3-5am, getting home at 6am minimum. You waste most or all of the next day.

randomopining··on Who killed the rave?
Tons of people just go and imbibe in various things and just sway to the music or the beat. It really is a blank slate to make it what you want, and i think that's why its popular - many types of people all go to them for many different reasons.
randomopining··on Who killed the rave?
This is it. The phone scrolling has become so addicting that people just go on their phones. And audio quality. You can enjoy the music sometimes at better quality in your own home and scrolling all the same.
randomopining··on NYC Congestion Pricing Tracker
Subways are very safe, you obviously don't live or have spent much time in NYC. Millions of people ride them daily. Office workers making $$$, teens, everybody.

Driving is likely less safe. And you still didn't tell me why somebody is driving into Manhattan below 60th st, 5 times a week. To commute? What type of job would it be?

randomopining··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
I'm just saying they tend to be more high trust, which is supported by statistical data.
randomopining··on NYC Congestion Pricing Tracker
Why are poor people who own a car and can pay for parking driving into Manhattan often? Does your premise even make sense?
randomopining··on NYC Congestion Pricing Tracker
What does free transit do? People need to earn some money and then use that money. It's a healthy psyche. $3 for a ride anywhere in the city is pretty cheap
randomopining··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
Look at Japan as a homogenous and extremely (if not the most) high trust society.
randomopining··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
I mean if you develop good hobbies or sports that are never ending like running, you can run yourself physically tired everyday which will help a lot.
randomopining··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
It's not that warm in Spain right now though. Maybe canary islands?
randomopining··on Ask HN: What you are planning to learn in 2025 for your career and why?
Try to become top level at Java and complex systems patterns
randomopining··on Only 720k Snapdragon X laptops sold in Q3 – less than 0.8% of PCs
I think most normal people liked the M1 because of the battery life. A lot of people are lazy with charging in general, so its a huge benefit to just open the lid and it's working.
randomopining··on Tell HN: Tailscale is giving 451s within Russia
Wait so can't you just use an encrypted connection to a physical host somewhere outside of russia and then basically haave access to everything?
