random_moonwalk··on Extracting training data from diffusion models
I think there's a concern also that smaller companies can gain a competitive edge via resistance to reputational damage. As Yann LeCun recently tweeted:

'By releasing public demos that, as impressive & useful as they may be, have major flaws, established companies have less to gain & more to lose than cash-hungry startups.

If Google & Meta haven't released chatGPT-like things, it's not because they can't. It's because they won't.' (https://twitter.com/ylecun/status/1617908306420600833)

random_moonwalk··on Resident Evil Village in the browser through Stadia
Very cool. Script a bit awkward though judging by the intro - 'Daughter?... Oh yes my daughter who I have travelled to this remote village to find, now I remember.'
random_moonwalk··on Which housing markets are most exposed to the coming interest-rate storm?
Ah this makes way more sense!
random_moonwalk··on Which housing markets are most exposed to the coming interest-rate storm?
'In Australia, homeowners’ average debt as a share of income has swollen to 150%' - does this mean the monthly repayments are 1.5x the monthly income of owners? The number of > 100% debt as share of income is wild if I'm interpreting this correctly - how is this not indicative of a swathe of imminent defaults?
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Suggested reading about managing R&D projects
Thanks for this
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Suggested reading about managing R&D projects
Thanks, looks great!
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Suggested reading about managing R&D projects
Thanks, sounds very interesting - where can I find your email?
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Suggested reading about managing R&D projects
Thanks. I suppose I'm after more materials related to projects with a science/research element where outcomes are perhaps more loosely defined than for a typical software project. I haven't read this, however, and it is definitely relevant so it's going on the list.
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Suggested reading about managing R&D projects
Much appreciated!
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Suggested reading about managing R&D projects
Thanks, will pick up a copy!

Loved Skunkworks, will checkout The Soul of a New Machine - thanks!
random_moonwalk··on I have no idea what to do with my life
After deciding on a DAW, IMO the first pieces of gear worth investing in are decent studio monitors and headphones. Nothing helped more to improve my music than being able to hear it properly.
random_moonwalk··on Convert Apple NeuralHash model for CSAM Detection to ONNX
This would be bizarre - wouldn't this mean that Apple are essentially shipping illegal images with their OS? (Subject to some as yet unknown decoder)
random_moonwalk··on My startup failed, then I found out I was unemployable
I agree - I feel like I’m collecting ‘aha!’ moments and they tend to stick if you’ve been banging your head against a wall a bit.
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
https://www.nand2tetris.org/ - 'The site contains all the project materials and software tools necessary for building a general-purpose computer system from the ground up.'

A new edition of the book it's based on is coming out in June I think.

random_moonwalk··on The Distinguished Medieval Investigators
Why? I think in this case the 'penis' is highly relevant.
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Did you take any fresh MOOCs as of 2020?
I'm currently taking one called Moral Foundations of Politics (https://www.coursera.org/learn/moral-politics) with my girlfriend. Netflix became a staple of many lockdown evenings and we thought we'd sprinkle in something a bit more engaging (and unrelated to our work).
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: Why is Bitcoin crashing massively right now?
I'm curious how the automated market makers keep the prices in sync across exchanges, any more detail you can offer/links to further reading?
random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: What is the easiest way to get a PhD?
Not really an answer, but possibly food for thought. I suspect there are a handful of funded projects that are retreading old ground in seemingly disparate disciplines, for example by applying fairly simple computational techniques to areas that have seen very little prior activity from anyone with an interest in CS (arts subjects perhaps).

Also worth noting that if you're in the UK (possibly other non-US countries too) you wouldn't have to go through the whole qualifying exam ringer which cuts down the effort slightly and the expected number of years until thesis submission to 3-4.

random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: What are some great posts or articles about history of computing?
Valley of Genius is a fun way to become acquainted with some of the Valley's history (for those who haven't read it, it's an oral history comprised of interview snippets from a bunch of key pioneers and people who were at the right place at the right time).
random_moonwalk··on Swift: Google’s Bet on Differentiable Programming
I wonder how important more superficial elements will be in terms of future adoption. As a Python programmer Swift looks much more familiar and if you can easily import familiar packages from Python then maybe this will help overcome the inertia required to switch, especially in industry.
random_moonwalk··on How I recorded an album on my own, in my room
Awesome, thanks! I'm going to give this a go :)
random_moonwalk··on How I recorded an album on my own, in my room
Hi, sorry for hijacking. I'm a bedroom producer noob and I'm currently using an NT1-A for vocal stuff although I've recently been working with a female vocalist who's got a very strong (and pretty bright-sounding) voice. Would you recommend giving the Sm57 a go for this sort of thing?
random_moonwalk··on U.S. Fighters About to Get Infrared Sensors That Could Be Huge for UFO Reporting
It sounds like the Patent Examiner's issue is not necessarily with the fundamental science so much as with the enormous amount of energy required to make use of the ideas. Though this doesn't mean the science is sound (I'm definitely not one to judge!), if the patents are combined with leaked (fabricated) videos of Navy pilots encountering exotic craft then maybe this is enough to send rival states down some rabbit hole.
random_moonwalk··on California law banning bots from pretending to be real people without disclosure
Ah, I think you're referring to the recent EU copyright directive (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directive_on_Copyright_in_the_...) rather than GDPR.
random_moonwalk··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
If you broke apart what brexit might actually mean for the country into its constituent parts, I think most people would feel out of their depth voting on these potential amendments individually. It's interesting that when you package all the details up into a single ill-defined 'brexit' people feel happy to project their own vague meaning onto the term and confidently cast their vote.
random_moonwalk··on AlphaFold: Using AI for scientific discovery
Any particularly good books you can recommend that you came across on your Amazon binge?
random_moonwalk··on Spotify Teardown: Inside the Black Box of Streaming Music
'Spotify Teardown combines interviews, participant observations, and other analyses of Spotify's “front end” with experimental, covert investigations of its “back end.”'

It would be helpful to see a list of its contents/preview. I can't quite tell what this is about - it seems like it promises some technical detail which doesn't square with the authors' backgrounds?

random_moonwalk··on Ask HN: I'm just a programmer worried about climate change, how can I help?
David Mackay (Physicist and author of Sustainable Energy - without the hot air http://www.withouthotair.com/Contents.html):

'Have no illusions. To achieve our goal of getting off fossil fuels, these reductions in demand and increases in supply must be big. Don’t be distracted by the myth that “every little helps.” If everyone does a little, we’ll achieve only a little. We must do a lot. What’s required are big changes in demand and in supply.'

You have to start dragging the mouse from higher up the window as far as I can tell.
