ramgine··on Pi 1.0
Our architecture team started with vscode and windows because it’s “how it’s been done” but within a year they all migrated to ghostty or another terminal on Mac because it’s so much faster and efficient.
ramgine··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I use Raycast and it’s much better than spotlight imo
ramgine··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
The magic that is opex compared to capex. I'm sure it makes sense to some bean counter somewhere in the company, but for us who manage the resources it's always a loss.
ramgine··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
I got my current job because I could lead the hyper-v to VMware migration project. Just this year I led the VMware to hyper-v migration project. VMware was such a great product (although a bit cumbersome in the VCF environment I managed). It’s really unfortunate it went the way of Broadcom. In comparison Hyper-v feels like a typical Microsoft product. A bunch of different tools created by different teams to do tasks that feel bolted on and afterthoughts. I have to run FCM to manage the nodes? But I run HVM to manage the roles? But there’s no overall resource management like VMware vsphere or proxmox does natively?

I’ve quietly built a proxmox cluster in our environment for semi-prod workloads for when the inevitable windows host has issues.

ramgine··on My local model setup on an M4 Pro Mac Mini
With which model. I have a 3060 with a bunch of system ram

Americans don’t bother to read or learn from history
ramgine··on Scrap (2006)
I’ve had a perpetual back injury because my small business owner boss had his tech support people move a piano of his while on the clock. Then he has a doctor buddy of his look at it and try to tell me I have hepatitis. Which multiple follow ups proved I didn’t. Don’t do labor outside of what’s expected for the position.
ramgine··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Think it’s better to travel without a phone at all and buy one when arriving in the us? Problematic I guess with everything being digital
ramgine··on Hello, me. It's been a while
I wear ANC headphones most of the time and especially in public because people are too loud. I have nothing playing, it’s just quieter ambient noise.
ramgine··on The climate benefits of retiring an operational combustion engine vehicle
Changing a timing belt is not serious maintenance. Just something that needs to be done at 100k. I just did the timing belt and water pump on my 300k tundra over the course of a weekend for 100 bucks.
ramgine··on Donate to GrapheneOS
I switch between an iPhone and a GrapheneOS phone. I have a garmin watch and never thought to use it for tap to pay. I’m dumb. Setting this up this evening
ramgine··on GrapheneOS Defends Data-Wiping Function That Blocked US Border Search
Unfortunately, these days with how governments want to spy on everything your phone is your biggest vulnerability. Better to travel with a dumb phone than something that will send you to jail. Regardless whether it’s wiped or not, depending on the mood of the officer.
ramgine··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
Thanks! I’m getting into cooking and have basic teflon pans (Rachel ray pans given to us by my MIL) and I’m looking to get nice ones and be done with it
ramgine··on First Robotic Satellite Servicer Launched
TIL DARPA is still around. Kind of thought they got the “doge” treatment
ramgine··on Tell HN: Namecheap gave my account to an unverified third party
I got that same email but skimmed it. I guess I need to double check and then move.
ramgine··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Have you looked at fiio? They’ve been doing it a while and aren’t crazy expensive https://www.fiio.com/player

This seems like what he said but less words
ramgine··on Show HN: A new kind of FPS aim trainer
These are great suggestions. It’s what I see pros doing, just really hard to get there.
ramgine··on Show HN: A new kind of FPS aim trainer
I used to play q3l competitively and I can’t imagine trying to get any real results using a gamepad without help. That’s a neat idea.
ramgine··on Watching Tucson's Backyard Birds with Solar-Powered M1 Mac Mini
This is fun! I wonder how difficult it would be to build something solar for just the mini.
ramgine··on GTX 1080s: Testing a Legend
I just threw together my old 1060 in a steamOS - adjacent box running cachyOS. It’s great for couch co-op platformers. The GPUs were overkill for most games then and can still run new indie 2d games now.
ramgine··on Reviving a 15-year-old netbook with Arch Linux
Unrelated to your post (I missed those form factors) but has imgur become enshittified too? If I try to zoom in on your picture it gives me a popup I can’t clear telling me to install the app. Sad.
ramgine··on The largest available Minecraft world, totalling 15 TB
How would one go about running this server, or a part of it? I’m guessing not all the map has to be in ram at the same time right?
ramgine··on Run Windows 2000 on a DEC Alpha with a new es40 fork
I still have my snow leopard usb installer. That was a great OS. It made me switch to daily driving a Mac completely
ramgine··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
I’ve been a regular lemmy user for a few years now and it’s gotten better. The communists (and fascist) platforms have been de-federated from the major platforms. It’s still full of Reddit complaining from ex redditors. I don’t think that will change.

My login server is lemmy.world, so if you sign up with something else ymmv.

ramgine··on Runing GLM-5.2 on local hardware
I have up to 1tb of ddr4 in my server but it only has a 12gb vram 3060. Would getting a 24gb vram make this a viable system or am I throwing money away?
ramgine··on Nintendo Wii U games running from a 1980's Bernoulli disk [video]
Wow that’s a crazy hack. I never heard of it.
ramgine··on I hacked into the worst e-bike and fixed it [video]
I’ve been a fan of his for years (have stickers and a hoodie for berm peak). In the past couple years I stopped watching his channel because he stopped trail building. His new stuff is for entry level people and I’m sure it gets tons of traffic, but watching him make use of his old back yard and his new one was inspiring and fun.
ramgine··on OpenAI Prepping for On-Prem Product?
I wouldn’t put “private” or “secure” in the same product being sold by Microsoft
ramgine··on How do you design a $30k electric pickup? Inside Ford's skunkworks
I’ve wanted a kei truck for a while. Then when you park it next to suburban mom’s expedition/escalade/luxury bus it’s so tiny it looks unsafe. Unfortunately I live in a city where small town trips are difficult without getting on a 70+ mph freeway and competing with those vehicles
