raleighm··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I loved this, and his Last and First Men. It made me crave more "future histories."
raleighm··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I've read all his series but haven't gotten to Peace one yet, and his diehard fans all seem to agree it's one of his best works. How was it, other than the tangle. (Which is my experience with all of his books tbh.)
raleighm··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
On Elric and Earthsea: having read both, yeah I'm the same as you, I much prefer Earthsea. If you're open to another hopeful speculative fiction series of comparable quality as Earthsea (in my view), try Book of the Long Sun by Gene Wolfe (whom Le Guin described as "our Melville"). It's great - quirky, intricate, inspiring.

> My Name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok

I love these types of books and learned there's a term for them. A bildungsroman about an artist is called a künstlerroman. I went on a künstlerroman kick a while back. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Martin Eden. Roderick Hudson. I'm aware of My Name is Asher Lev and meant to get to that one too. Thanks for the reminder.

Well done! That's far into a long series. What do you think of it thus far?
raleighm··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Would you be willing to say more? I'm intrigued.
raleighm··on New YC homepage
I had the same reaction. Also the new vibe feels less like “make something people want” and more like “join the pantheon.”

raleighm··on Nine things I learned in ninety years
Exactly. Wisdom sometimes comes from having the right thing to do already articulated in your head (which itself took some reps to articulate), seeing yourself not follow it, and seeing the consequences.
raleighm··on Show HN: Make stories for your stuffed animals
Cute - great idea
raleighm··on Show HN: Kotobase: Slack translation for EN/JP teams
Yeah. So many companies operate like that. It hurts not just comprehension and speed but also team togetherness.
raleighm··on Tell HN: Incorporated my software company today
Good luck
raleighm··on I trusted an LLM, now I'm on day 4 of an afternoon project
Laughed aloud at this one. Yup, same here.
raleighm··on Ask HN: In 2024 what's the best way to manage contacts?
Thanks for the detailed response. I totally agree, Google Contacts can feel limiting, especially when dealing with a lot of business-related contacts where roles and departments come into play. The lack of robust tagging and organization tools like folders or containers is definitely a pain point.
raleighm··on Ask HN: In 2024 what's the best way to manage contacts?
Thanks for the response. I've added more information above.
raleighm··on My daughter (7 years old) used HTML to make a website
Well done.

Well said.

What do you aim to achieve by tackling the problem?
raleighm··on 1982: The Hobbit
Was unaware of this. Can’t wait to play this with my kids this weekend. We recently finished The Hobbit and have been reading Choose Your Own Adventure books. They’ll love this.

Cicero by the Accord Project is an attempt at this. Machine-readable markup language for contracting. https://accordproject.org/projects/cicero
raleighm··on Show HN: Time tracking with plain text files
This is great. I keep coming back to plain text when I fall out with other tools. I use it for daily logs and journals. I also use it for five-star ratings: books, albums, and daily performance reviews (e.g. ●●●◍◌ as indicating 3.5 stars). Works well for me.
raleighm··on The mythical “fast” web page
Same here. I have no tool/hardware needs at the moment but I'm having a blast navigating the site.
raleighm··on The mythical “fast” web page
I'd assumed that was at least somewhat intentional, to encourage use of the app.
raleighm··on Stack operations on a guitar loop pedal
What I love about loop pedals is it makes time a musical instrument. Brian Eno played with this. Dustin Wong is a delight.

raleighm··on Show HN: Muse – Tool for Thought on iPad
I agree. That price for a great home to do great thinking? Well worth it.
raleighm··on Show HN: Muse – Tool for Thought on iPad
Last year I stumbled upon the research articles about Muse development at Ink & Switch. They exude care and craftsmanship. Really fun to read. Highly recommended. Muse's newsletter is great, too. https://www.inkandswitch.com/

I didn't know anyone on the Muse team but was so curious I reached out and asked for beta access and they kindly gave it. I've been using for about a year. I really love it. My use cases are light -- hobby sketches, sundry visual notes -- but I keep finding more things to use it for because it's just so... fun. It's fun feeling so extended and free using a digital tool.

I'm pleased to see it on HN front page.

Same here. I’m not agreeing with all @sillysaurusx is saying but I’m learning from the exchange and don’t want it discouraged.
