raitom··on CES Was Full of Useless Robots and Machines That Don’t Work
We are talking about machines but during my last trip to Japan I’ve been blown away by the domotic present in the appartment I rented. There was a self-filling bathtube that I could program directly from the kitchen.

Is there any « bathtube auto-fill/alexa » product in the US? I never been able to find something like that. I’d like to be able to ask alexa to prepare my bath while I’m cooking.

raitom··on Why don’t all cars look like Ferraris?
At least in the US they make good looking but affordable car like the mustang, camaro, corvette,...

In europe it’s really rare to see a car that doesn’t look like a potatoe.

raitom··on California updates laws around salary and criminal histories of job applicants
I drove and got arrested once for being on the BAC limit (not over, on). It was after a company party. I couldn't let my car parked for the night so I decided to drive. If I had known that I was going to be pulled over that night I would have chosen to take an uber and let my car be towed. Or better, drink water.

All it takes is one mistake. Who should care except me if I got convicted? As long as I know, this incident never prevented me from doing my software engineer job.

raitom··on USCIS is challenging an unusually large number of H-1B applications
Young french software engineer here. I was an intern with a J1 for a year in a company in san diego. I'm working remotely since last february.

My H1B got picked in the lotery but I received an RFE early august. I had to write a ton of technical doc about my job and the system I work on. The documents were submitted mid-october. I received my approval last week.

I guess if your application is legit you don't have much to fear about getting an RFE.

raitom··on Welcoming Tech Talent from Around the World to France
I should have said "Good luck to have that in France, when you are fresh out of school".

I know you can have the same salary in Paris than in the US but it requires 20 years of experience and two degrees from X and Normal Sup.

My friends make on average ~1800€/month after tax and most of them still need to live with their parents. A majority of them want to move out of France. I understand them, no way you study so hard to make 600€ more than the minimum wage (~1200€/month).

raitom··on Welcoming Tech Talent from Around the World to France
I went to an engineering school in France. In France it takes 5 years to get a master degree.

Each year we must do an internship that varies in length between 1 month in first year to 6 months in the final year.

While I was in school, one of my friend and me, created a small game server hosting company (Minecraft, counter strike, ...). We started with 0€ and ended up with ~2k/month each, more than the minimal salary, while being students. We were working on that after school and during the week ends. It was technically challenging and we both learned a lot quickly (Rails, how to manage and promote a company, how to handle customer service, ...) .I remember we even used the first versions of Docker to create game server containers.

Thanks to that, I got an internship in Switzerland during my 2nd year.

That school requires that during your 3rd year of study you have to do a 3 months minimum internship (up to 9 months using your 4th year) in an english speaking coutry.

Most of the students go to the UK or Australia, because they are cheap options, but thanks to my job in Switzerland I had tons of money and I wanted to go to New York so I sent hundreds of resume to companies in New York. I finally got contacted for an internship offer but in San Diego. I had no better option so I accepted. I didn't even know where was San Diego.

I worked during 9 months and I loved this city. I went back to France to get my degree and instead of doing my final internship in France, like everyone does to get a job, I sent a couple of resume to companies in San Diego.

It was way more easy this time due to my first experience and I was able to get an offer from one of the best company in San Diego.

I worked well and after I got my degree the company wanted to switch me full time, so they applied for an H1B. I did not get it the first year but got it the second time. I had to work remotely for ~9 months because my intern visa (J1) expired but I finally went back to San Diego. Now I'm waiting on my green card (EB2).

I'm French and I moved to San Diego, so....

My health insurance is paid by my company and I don't really care about free education.

Yet, after all my bills, groceries for the month and rent (which is around $2k/month) is paid, I still have almost $2k / month in my pocket to do whatever I want. Good luck to have that in France.

The quality of life in Southern California is miles ahead from what I could have in France. My only regret is about food.

raitom··on Welcoming Tech Talent from Around the World to France
Out of those 70 companies, how many have job offers in english?
raitom··on Welcoming Tech Talent from Around the World to France
No, around 40k€ / year, before taxes.

raitom··on H-1B visas mainly go to Indian outsourcing firms
@aub3bhat: Send me more informations about that.

The PERM process in itself takes 6 months.

raitom··on H-1B visas mainly go to Indian outsourcing firms
Sure, it works if you're still in school. What if you already graduated?

I got an MS from a top engineering school from France last June. I already did 2 internships (with a J-1 Intern) and lived in San Diego during ~2 years in total. I have my friends, my gf, my life there.

I'm not enough "exceptional" to get an O-1 or a green card though EB-1.

My employer don't want to sponsor me for an EB-2 now because I'll have to stay out of the USA for an undetermined duration (years).

I'm working as a contractor right now in Canada, waiting 90 days outside of the USA to get another J-1 Intern and my employer is also filling another H1B this year. I don't know what I'll do in 1 year if I don't get an H1B this year.

See, it's not that easy.

raitom··on H-1B visas mainly go to Indian outsourcing firms
At least 1 year, which is ages for an employer.
raitom··on H-1B visas mainly go to Indian outsourcing firms
It takes years to get a green card on EB-3 (same on EB-2) if your country is Current. Most companies don't want to wait 2+ years and pay $10k in lawyer's fees.
raitom··on H-1B visas mainly go to Indian outsourcing firms
Exactly! I'm french and it will be the second time this year that I apply for an H1B. Without Tata and Infosys I'd have it for a while now.

raitom··on If you don’t trust your employees to work remotely you shouldn’t have hired them
I tried it today with my friends who are 6k miles away from me and the video quality is the best I experienced compared to other software.
raitom··on If you don’t trust your employees to work remotely you shouldn’t have hired them
Yeah, Teamspeak uses the same sound codec (Opus I think) as Discord. I use that to talk with my friends and famility that are 6k miles away and the sound is almost perfect.
raitom··on If you don’t trust your employees to work remotely you shouldn’t have hired them
Question for remote workers here: I'm forced to work remotely during the next 3 months (thanks to the US Visa system) and with my coworkers, we're struggling to find a good communication software for our daily huddle.

What we use right now is Hangout for the video and a VOIP solution for the sound. The video quality is not so bad but the sound sucks.

We tried Skype, Slack video and couple of other software but I'm not really satisfied by any of them. Discord has a perfect sound but I'd like to know if there's a software out there more "professional"?

Meanwhile, in France: https://www.scaleway.com/

Same thing with OVH, you can get a powerful dedicated server with unlimited bandwidth for the price of a medium EC2 instance. I hope they will open their datacenter in California soon.

raitom··on Most drivers who own cars with built-in GPS systems use phones for directions
I have a 2015 Mustang with GPS, no carplay, and I always use Google Map on my iPhone (and everyone in san diego assume that i'm a tourist because of that haha).

Same for my friends with their cars, I never saw them using their built-in gps.

I already used carplay in another car, but apple plan on it is not as good as google map.
