raister··on Ads are impersonating government websites in Google results, despite ban
What's ironically is that the ads were paid with scam money, so it's like Google is in fact, part of the 'gang'... Crazy world! Most part of scams register names that looks like something legit, but, of course, no one seems to care who's buying what they're buying when registering domain names.

I don't know if it is relevant, but I receive daily requests on ResearchGate from people with lots of 'following' and zero 'followers', no picture, no papers, no questions, i.e. empty profile. The names are quite 'inventive' such as Alex Brooks, Julie Sanders, Mark Wellington, some chinese-like names posing as students, and so on.

Brazil does limit land purchase (officially land purchase) by citizens from other countries.

The country could be forced to comply or sanctioned - and that's URGENT.

It won't simply 'grow up' because the President himself was caught on tape saying things like "US and Europe destroyed their forests and became superpowers, now that it's our time (sic), they mingle in our sovereignty on deciding what to do with our own land!". He is vested on destroying it, on allowing deforestation, on putting incompetent people in key positions.

Well, those are 'tricky' regions. I don't believe that in Rondônia they will say: "what, this tree belongs to Bolívia! don't take it down, please!". It's like a mess in the that 'border'.

When Brazil stops then, and there are no more trees to take down in its side, then it will stop being a Brazilian problem?

Maybe we should act to salvage what remains instead of discussing who's fault it is. Well, as we are discussing, another 100 trees were down.

Brazilian here: the government will say in TV it's doing its best effort to protect the forest.

However, the president is appointing farmers and non-technical people all over those entities trying to protect the forest, and they are slowly giving rights, permits, etc. to deforestation.

And sadly, despite this being tracked and advertised by TV or other news entities, very little is done to deter these criminals all over the current administration.

MAYBE international lobbying could work with Brazil, as Germany threaten to reduce the money it gives to protect the forest in 2019 (I don't remember exactly when).

And let's not forget that the Amazon forest does not end in Brazilian borders - it goes on in many countries over there. People just assume it's a Brazilian problem (I know a large portion is located in Brazil's side), but it's more a 10-country problem, not to say, a humanity problem...

raister··on 50 Years of Pascal
The sheer amount of bugs that could be avoided by using := in let's say C!

if (a = b) c=1;

oh boy... :)

raister··on 50 Years of Pascal
This was 'solved' with pointers, didn't? (symbol ^) Well, we're talking about at least 25 years ago, so I clearly not remember this hiccup whatsoever
raister··on 50 Years of Pascal
The only thing I disliked was the `begin ... end` and the `begin ... end;` (notice the semicolon) structure on if-then-else

C (and many others) has simplified employing brackets.

raister··on We live in an age of distractions, dealing with constant mental stimulus
Me too. I understand what you mean. I'll leave here a classic Stoic passage:

After being told (of his exile), “Your case is being tried in the Senate,” Agrippinus responded:

“Good luck betide! But it is the fifth hour now” (he was in the habit of taking his exercise and then a cold bath at that hour); “let us be off and take our exercise.”

After he had finished his exercise someone came and told him, “You have been condemned.”

“To exile,” says he, “or to death?”

To exile.

“What about my property?”

It has not been confiscated.

“Well then, let us go to Aricia and take our lunch there.”

raister··on I tried to report scientific misconduct. How did it go?
The paper was not accepted at that point. He could just denied publication out of spite. I played the odds, and got published, despite doing that.

I'm sorry the story ended badly :) and yes - I've lowered the bar, sadly.

raister··on I tried to report scientific misconduct. How did it go?
What about Editor's ethics or lack thereof?

I got accepted in a Chinese-oriented journal (i.e. most of the Editorial Board were Chinese) - I am not just 'saying' this, I'm saying because the OP mentioned "it's a Chinese thing" over results and datasets, whatever, I digress.

On the last revision round, the Editor told me that I was lacking some references, which he promptly send me. Turned out that 6 out 6 of his 'recommendations' were papers HE WAS ONE OF THE AUTHORS.

Since the paper was not OFFICIALLY accepted, I caved in and cited the guy (3 times), to my UTTER DISMAY.

If you don't play the game, other Chinese are playing the game and having the results.

I don't mean to insult Chinese people, but this is what is happening...

raister··on 51 Star Flag (2011)
I like the Brazilian 'solution' for this: simply add a new star into the constellation and call it a day! ;) PS: for those who don't know, the flag depicts the sky of Rio de Janeiro on Nov 15th, 1889, day of the proclamation of the Republic.

We tried other options, as well as a very similar flag as to the US, check it out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Brazil

raister··on Longest known exposure photograph ever captured using a beer can
This is similar to the "_______ DESTROYS ___________" in YouTube videos. It's one way of getting likes/upvotes/karma points. It has to draw attention somehow. It has to have some weird thing (unexplained to the eyes of the author), a rare event (a Black Swan?) or something that is highly controversial so gets the discussion going. It has been like that since the first headline on the first newspaper ever made by man (perhaps earlier, under other medium).
raister··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
> The new legislation, which is expected to be passed by Germany's Bundestag parliament, would allow workers to write off €5 ($6) per day to offset extra heating and electricity costs.

That's not feasible or scalable. As it is a balance, they will give you this but will take out somewhere else (less yearly increase and so on).

It's almost a disservice...

raister··on Ask HN: How you're dealing with cheating in Work From Home settings?
>On the other side let me ask you back another question: Does it really matter who is doing the work (your employee or their hired "assistants") if the work done is qualitative and solves your problem? Imagine that instead of employees you will have contractors?

I'm thinking about sensitive data floating around and state agents targetting my organisation to discover flaws in design, or adding backdoors, these kind of things

raister··on Amazon hires 427,000 people in 10 months
I needed to buy a set of bolts, I checked my local hardware store and 12 was sold by £2.99. I thought: 'this is expensive, let me check online'. Went to amazon, found the same for £1.99 with free shipping (prime). Now, which one should I buy? The one where I have to go somewhere and then pay more, or the other where I click a few buttons and the next day the product is with me? Should I 'invest' in my local hardware?

This book is a gem for all writers, fiction, papers, etc.

So many advice.

I like the one: write from start to finish then let it rest for 6 weeks and edit out 10% of everything you wrote.

Classic book. Read it twice already.
