raister··on Scrum is a cancer
> Their most aggressively marketed prescription was scrum.

I don't think Agile has prescribed this though. Scrum, in my view, is an intermediary 'solution' so non-technical 'bosses' can overlook and micromanage dev teams. I guess it all stems from 'unproductivity' really, those cases you mention, where you end up with sub-par devs trying to deliver complex software products.

raister··on I thought I wanted to be a professor, then I served on a hiring committee (2021)
> One professor strongly advocated for his own postdoc, even though his CV was not at all competitive. After considerable debate—and without consensus—he was invited for an interview anyway.

This alone happens more frequent than not. Idea here is to land (PhD) on a remarkable lab with a supervisor on the committee...

raister··on No one cares about your dreams unless you’re a famous writer
In 1993, Vidal lamented that literature had lost its place at the center of American culture:

"I said recently to a passing interviewer, 'You know, I used to be a famous novelist.' And the interviewer said, 'Oh, well, you're still very well known. People read your books.' And so I said, 'I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about the category. 'Famous novelist'? The adjective is inappropriate to the noun. It's like being — 'I'm a famous ceramicist.' Well, you can be a good ceramicist. You can be a rich ceramicist. You can be much admired by other ceramicists. But you aren't famous. That's gone."
raister··on Book Review: Applied Math for Security
Using these math ideas as Python APIs first and then explaining the why behind it, seems like a good idea before delving into the concepts if needed.
raister··on Kids trying to play video games on school laptops
Yes, that's my 'solution' as well - the router Sky (UK) gave me is utter crap, I put another one besides it and added QoS (so my kid has a poor game experience) and blocked useless websites (youtube, facebook, tiktok).

Call me a bad father, but it's working. When it takes a looong time to download a shitty Roblox game, he starts doing other projects. It's like magic.

raister··on What is Google doing with its open source teams?
"never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake"
raister··on The Python Paradox (2004)
When organisations were asked "Which languages and platforms in your application portfolio have been the greatest source of risk or exposure to your organization?" in the SANS Institute "A SANS Survey: Rethiking the Sec in DevSecOps: Security as Code", security officers mention Python 29.4% of the time (first of the list - they can choose up to three languages - dated 2021).

My question is: when will Python be seen as "risk or exposure 'free'" in the near future?

Edit: small typo

raister··on [dead]
I knew y'all wouldn't have a simple answer...
raister··on Authors’ names have ‘astonishing’ influence on peer reviewers: study
Sometimes the peer review is the one asking for citing him/hers work, not anybody else's...
raister··on Authors’ names have ‘astonishing’ influence on peer reviewers: study
First of all, Knuth would never publish something "garbage" because his reputation would be on the line for everyone to read (forever).
raister··on Bruce Willis Sells Deepfake Likeness Rights So His 'Twin' Can Star in Movies
And this is the point we arrived as 'humans': instead of promoting a new guy, we need the former guy because we remember him.
raister··on Midlife: A Philosophical Guide
Oh boy, you're in for a wild ride.

I had my kid at my forties.

TL;DR: you're always exhausted, since getting up in the morning, which you shouldn't, until early in the night - something I lack the grasp to understand, despite being more or less fit and not sedentary.

I guess it's the body starting to giving up on you somehow.

raister··on George Dantzig – A Modern Genius
Let's not forget the feat George Dantzig has achieved in statistics, never.
raister··on Why software engineers like woodworking
I can relate to this. I pick up woodworking a few years ago, before the pandemic, when wood was actually cheap. I chose to pursue a semi-'pure' manual hand tools only, and I'm feeling pretty satisfied. I embark on small projects, boxes, book dividers, etc., to disconnect from software development. If you want to pursue this manual woodworking, search YT for Wright Wood, Rex Krueger, Paul Sellers, etc. Craft masters.
raister··on Science needs more research software engineers
> Less PhD students

PhD students are the backbone of any research project. They interact with postdocs and with undergrads in the research ecossystem. If anything, they will be required more in the years to come, not less.

raister··on I'm quitting my PhD
Perhaps the research group and the culture plays a part on people taking out a good experience out of the PhD. The problem is to find the right place at the right time for you, matching your interests, and having people pursuing research with a reasonable amount of ego (note that I didn't say 'no ego').
raister··on I'm quitting my PhD
Blue Sky research is like that: you're venturing into new areas. I remember the advertisement posted by Shackleton: _"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success."_

That's how I feel about this. Chances of success are not as high as one would like, however, case affirmative, honour and recognition. A lot!

raister··on Cities with Nice Weather
This is so very true... Funny anecdote: whilst deciding where to pursue a PhD, the Univ. of Edinburgh website stated: "If you are deciding based on weather, don't come here."
raister··on Markov Chains for programmers
The author has uploaded a version of the book in the libertinus font - I guess he heard your complaints!
raister··on Markov Chains for programmers
Only the frontispiece uses a different font (can't say for sure whether it is Comic Sans though) - the rest is pure Times new Roman.
raister··on Markov Chains for programmers
The solutions in proprietary formats are for demonstration only - you could refer to the C code at all times. And also, they could be easily ported to GNU/Octave and LibreOffice Calc without any issues.
raister··on Markov Chains for programmers
Interesting find - really introductory examples. Good read, recommend it.
raister··on Dennis Ritchie Home Page (2006)
From Wikipedia: "News of Ritchie's death was largely overshadowed by the media coverage of the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, which occurred the week before."

NOW I'm sad.

RIP Richie, your place in computing heaven is secured.

raister··on Using load shedding to avoid overload
Since we are using the power abstraction, why not instead of load shedding, start up secondary machines servicing, which are slower, but could handle a bunch of simultaneous requests for some clients, or even tertiary ones?

That could at least postpone the load shedding, or handle localised surges in service demand due to user behaviour more effectively.

raister··on Mathematicians solve decades-old classification problem
Many 'external' actors are actually destroying the Amazon: Brazil's incompetence whilst voting (putting a crazy in charge); USA's inability to embargo Brazil if it keeps devastating the forest; Amazon is not located 'just at' Brazil, there are at least 5 other countries in the region; lack of international preoccupation with the forest;

I could go on and on and on...

Edit: 'on' to 'in' charge.

raister··on For literary novelists the past is pressing

raister··on Japan's government plans to encourage 4-day workweek, but experts split
Uruguay they tried that: people ended up working two jobs and feeling/looking tired on both! People will find a way, always. Just keep 40h - at least they won't try to find a 2nd job elsewhere...
raister··on Ads are impersonating government websites in Google results, despite ban
The key point here is that it's impossible to travel long distances in a short amount of time... Of course people travel. What's not normal is to log in in Miami and in the next minute log in Seattle....
raister··on Ads are impersonating government websites in Google results, despite ban
You usually login in the West Coast, then, all of a sudden, you started login in the East Coast -- hey, GOOGLE, FACEBOOK, isn't that ODD?????????????????

I can't believe they act as they don't know what's going on and have no means to deter this. They SHOULD BE LIABLE!
