r3m6··on Selenium IDE alternatives for UI regression testing
>I'd recommend coding the tests instead of using the IDE, much less frustrating.

The advantage of visual/screenshot-driven automation tools like Screenster.io or Kantu.io is twofold:

1. It allows non-developers to join the testing team and create automated web tests.

2. Even if you are a developer by training, tools like NW.js or PhantomJS still have a significant learning curve. I argue that developer time is typically better spend on the product than on coding complex test cases.

r3m6··on uBlock Origin for Microsoft Edge
That was Opera. Chrome took off because it was and is advertised on any Google property.
r3m6··on Netflix to block proxy access to content not available locally
Same here. I switched from Amazon Prime to NetFlix for the better subtitles.

NetFlix Germany is already better than Amazon Germany, but NetFlix USA is the best.

I wonder why it is sooo hard to provide original subtitles and original language for all movies. Is that also a licensing issue or just laziness?

r3m6··on Taiwan-based startup Gogoro re-imagines a cleaner and smarter electric scooter
Divide by 30 for US$ prices.

In Taiwan and China people are willing to spend near US$1000 for an Apple smart phone, so $3000-$4000 for a cool 'Apple' E-Scooter still sounds attractive to me. Unlike a car, you can park this thing directly in front of the stores, so everyone can see it/has to climb over it ;-)

I am not their target market, but next time I am in Taiwan I would rent this scooter, even at double/triple the cost of a regular one. I actually wanted to rent an e-scooter before, but everyone advised against it: "Too slow"

So for me the key question is: Does Gogoro feel like a real scooter, even with two people on it? Does it do to e-scooters what Tesla did for e-cars?

r3m6··on Google Nexus 5x and 6P
Same here. Can we/anyone tell from the specs how good (say, relative to S6/iPhone6) the new camera will be?
r3m6··on Tell HN: My own version of the American dream
Does it have to be the US? What about Berlin or Paris? http://www.bamf.de/EN/Infothek/FragenAntworten/BlaueKarteEU/...

In a nutshell, if you find an employer willing to hire you for a regular paid high-tech job, you will get a work visa, aka "Blue Card".

r3m6··on This Is Not America: Why Wal-Mart Left Germany (2006)
In addition, an important part of Aldi's recent success in Germany is that they do not compromise on quality. Often their products (say olive oil, toilet paper,...) win/score at the top of consumer reports. They have a great brand image (much better than Lidl).
r3m6··on Ask HN: Is shareware dead?
The shareware concept is doing well, just the name has changed to "30-day trial" or "Lite" or "Free/Pro" or....

As an example, Andy Brice blogs about his shareware business at http://successfulsoftware.net/

r3m6··on Cyber attack on German parliament still active, could cost millions
>as if the local agencies are somehow less dangerous

And in what way are they dangerous? And if not these experts, who should do this (expert) work?

r3m6··on Ask HN: How do I put together a computer for my blind mom?
With iMacros (for Chrome or Firefox) you can automate for example the login to websites. Maybe that can be part of your setup. Our use AutoHotkey (AHK) to automate Windows as a whole.
r3m6··on Greece draws up drachma plans, prepares to miss IMF payment
The quoted article is one point of view. As with all current events, only history will tell who is wrong or right.

Another viewpoint is: It is "public knowledge" that the same "bitter EU medicine" worked well for Ireland, Portugal and Spain. So from the "Pigs" countries - only the "g" refuses to take it. That is their right. But then don't blame/insult the doctor.

r3m6··on American students head to Germany for free college
How about: "...to improve academic overall performance" instead of "... in order to perform better in international rankings."

Diversity has proven benefits in many cases, I see it in my daily work. It is much more than just a number in a ranking.

> low-income regions (e.g. ex-Russian territory, Asia)

Asia? Low-income? These times are gone in many places. You need to update your knowledge. Diversity in your workplace could help :-)

r3m6··on 2015 Chromebook Pixel
Either way you pay for it.
r3m6··on Repository of censored and sensitive Chinese keywords
These lists would be great discussion material for a medium to advanced level Chinese class at the many Confucius institutes around the world. But it is very unlikely that it will show up there anytime soon.
r3m6··on [dead]
Shouldn't they use the ratio publications/faculty size instead of absolute numbers?
r3m6··on The autonomous Google car may never happen
I thought the key point of Googles new tiny & slow self-driving car is that it is so slow, that "just stopping" is the adequate solution to all unforeseen issues. This would give the driver enough time to wake up & take over. (Or someone does it remotely). And really, from all issues that might be open, I am sure that traffic lights are a solved problem. How hard would it be to pass a law that requires all (mobile) traffic lights to send out some radio-signal to communicate with self-driving cars? Such an emergency stop signal would also be useful for human-driven cars.
r3m6··on Show HN: Using computer vision to detect birds in parks
Nice. They use deep convolutional neural nets, which is the key algorithm that dominated the ILSVRC 2014. This computer vision contest included, among other challenges, recognizing different bird (and dog and cat and spider and.... ) breeds. There is a blog post about ILSVRC that even uses the same xkcd comic ;) http://blog.a9t9.com/2014/10/amazing-progress-of-computer-vi...
r3m6··on Ask HN: Moving from London to Amsterdam
London and Amsterdam are both EU. So if you can legally work in London, you can do so in Amsterdam.
r3m6··on Google Driverless Car – The Obstacle Detection Unit
Is Lidar really required? I assume Google uses it only because it does not care about cost at this point of the development.

German car makes (Mercedes, Audi, BMW,...) think they can create a driverless car without the need for expensive Lidar, see for example http://spectrum.ieee.org/cars-that-think/transportation/self...

r3m6··on Why Some Schools Are Selling All Their iPads
I fail to understand why any school would need iPads or similar devices. Use the classic blackboard and invest every $ in recruiting and training GOOD teachers.

Yes, a computer room or some sets of LEGO mindstorms kits can make good sense. But iPads or Chromebooks for every kid? Come on...

r3m6··on On Leave
>My friend and colleague Amit Singhal took about six weeks off not too long ago,...

In Europe, we call this simply a summer vacation ;-)

r3m6··on I got invited to write for the Huffington Post today
Simple: We need taxes. The questions is only what kind of taxes.

The inheritance tax is a very democratic tax and benefits society as a whole. And it is good for your kids.

r3m6··on Optimizely Raises $57 Million
I am not sure why this got downvoted. Using cloud services for your a/b testing can reveal key competitive information to the company. So trust is a big issue. That is one reason why I try to keep everything inside GA.
r3m6··on My autonomous Lego Rover at CeBIT 2014 in pictures
The robot is great but the article confusing: So is robot a product for sale (like for education) or "just" a nice toy to attract attention to something else the author sells?
r3m6··on Sane Concurrency with Go
Alternative: The iMacros addons for Firefox, Chrome or IE. Not exactly an autofill replacement, more like a macro recorder for web browsers.
r3m6··on Learn Sanskrit Online
I am with you - as someone who was forced to learn Latin in school for four years. The reason given to us was exactly the same, just replace "India and beyond" with "Europe and beyond".

I'll repeat: it has zero value unless you happen to be a researcher or a linguist.

r3m6··on Paid maternity leave world maps for mothers and fathers
Youth unemployment is currently a serious problems in a few European states (e. g. Spain) but (a) not in most and (b) it is certainly not related to maternity leave or universal health insurance.
r3m6··on Paid maternity leave world maps for mothers and fathers
I am not sure about Canada, but in most of Europe not the company but the state (= tax payer) pays for the cost of the maternity leave.
r3m6··on List of minimalist frameworks
