r00k··on Today I wrote some code
Congrats on discovering testing! Getting "test-infected" yielded easily the biggest productivity gain in my career.

However, you've got another big win waiting for you if you'll try something subtly different: write the tests first. Moving to TDD was another large improvement in my overall productivity because it drastically improved the quality of the code I write.

It seemed silly when I first heard of it, but now I won't write code any other way (except for short, exploratory programs). Give it a try!

That's a great point, thanks for mentioning it. I realized it myself earlier but forgot to remember it :).

I'll rerun the survey on a screencast post.

r00k··on HackerEngine: A payment-ready Rails app with Bootstrap, Stripe, and KISSmetrics
Thanks for your questions!

You can buy it once and use it as many times as you like.

"UI" refers to a landing page and checkout form that we pre-built and include with the app. We didn't do a good job of making that clear, and that's something we want to improve on the sales pages.

Your question about bugfixes is an excellent one. Eventually, we'll be moving this to an engine/gem, but for now you'd have to make manual changes. This is far from ideal, so we're planning on fixing it.

This is just for one time purchases. We'd like to add support for recurring billing at some point, but it's not planned for the immediate future.

Thanks for your feedback on the price. As this is at MVP stage right now, everything can possibly change, including that.

Sorry about that, and thanks for letting me know. I messed up our SSL settings at 3AM. New personal rule: no mucking about with crucial settings when exhausted.

It's fixed now.

Good question.

I've got good coverage with unit tests and cucumber features.

The tests do things like bang on the credit card form in a bunch of ways and make sure things work correctly. The integration tests actually hit Stripe's test servers to ensure that payment processing is working correctly.

r00k··on HackerEngine: A payment-ready Rails app with Bootstrap, Stripe, and KISSmetrics
Yes, it should be. It's at the very top of our list to fix this, but we're hoping to collect feedback while we undergo the certificate approval process.

Hey all, I'm one of the authors of HackerEngine. I'm happy to answer any questions you have and would love your feedback.

Thanks!

r00k··on Vim University - Screencasts and Articles for Serious Vim Students
Can you explain why you have that impression?
r00k··on Vim University - Screencasts and Articles for Serious Vim Students
Well, detailed doesn't necessarily mean advanced :), but I'm planning on releasing advanced content too.
r00k··on Vim University - Screencasts and Articles for Serious Vim Students
I've used keycastr in the past (OS X) for showing the keys I'm pressing. It's a little distracting though.

I've found that with sufficient narration, I don't need it.

r00k··on Vim University - Screencasts and Articles for Serious Vim Students
Yep, I plan on having a mix of free and paid content.

Hey all.

I'm the author of the site and totally agree that RSS is desperately needed. It's next on my list.

That's too bad. I wish your editor had had more respect for your readers.
r00k··on The cleanest vimrc you'll ever see
I'd recommend not mapping over ; It's very useful. It repeats your last f or F command. I probably use it a dozen times a day.

If you do map something on top of it, consider moving it elsewhere.

r00k··on This is CoffeeScript
I'd have to study the resulting JavaScript to understand what it's really going to do.

Once.

And then you could use shorter, more convenient syntax for the rest of your life. Worth it?

r00k··on Changes to our policies
Nice writing. Nailed the right tone and level of detail. Feels like it came from humans.
r00k··on Ask HN: ______ is to Python as K&R is to C?
Programming Ruby (aka "the Pickaxe").

I never fully grokked Ruby's object model until I read that book.

I reread it often and always discover/re-discover useful information.

r00k··on Forking with the Edit Button
I think this will be huge for things like READMEs, where I'll often spot lots of typos or examples that could be improved.

I was there. No recording I'm afraid.
r00k··on GitHub launches Issues 2.0
The cool part is that Kyle Neath deployed Issues 2.0 during his lightning talk at CodeConf. Quite badass.
r00k··on RSpec is for the literate
which requires you to be very familiar with Rspec

This sort of thing will likely be surprising to someone new to Rspec. However, as a general rule, I don't think it's fair to knock tools because they're a bit tough for new users to understand. Someone new to vim is hopelessly lost and slow at first, but I can fly with it, because I've taken the time to learn it.

Yes, I had to invest some time to learn about Rspec's 'be_' construction; yes, it confused me at first. However, having learned it, I always use it now. I really enjoy the readability of the code that results from it.

As in many things, there is a tradeoff here. It's fair for both of us to argue that we prefer to sacrifice different things.

r00k··on Twitter Kills The #Dickbar
This seems to be a great example of one of the challenges with iOS apps: you can't do a limited roll-out of new features.

If Twitter could have deployed the bar to a hundred or so real users, I think they would have quickly found that people mostly hated it.

I believe you're allowed to distribute test versions of your app to 6-ish handsets for testing, but I'm sure this barely covers the internal folks at Twitter. It'd be nice if they'd had the option to do some more thorough early testing. (Whether they would have done so, or would have listened to the results is outside my point).

r00k··on Osdev: a SubReddit devoted to operating system development
Those of you who might write this off because of a negative image of reddit in general: these tightly-focused subreddits can be a gold mine of quality content.

The trick is to subscribe just to the subreddits that match your interests. If you'd like a searchable list of them, this appears to be a good resource: http://www.subreddits.org/search.html

r00k··on Review my app: FoodFyt, FaceMash for food
Very nice design.

One request: keyboard shortcuts.

If you'd like people to play a bunch (and I imagine you would), this would be a nice touch.
