qxxx··on Ask HN: What are some of the best podcasts for developers?
oh yeah! Developer Tea is my favorite podcast, it is short, so it is enough if I go for a walk (or drink some tea)
qxxx··on Can Duolingo actually teach you Spanish?
I used duolingo to learn spanish for few months. I know some words and sentences (most important: donde esta una biblioteca?) But one day I got bored and stopped but it was kinda fun.
qxxx··on Ask HN: What is the best income stream you have created till date?
In the 2000 I used to write a windows tool. It was making me some pocket money until I stopped it in 2015.. I stopped it because it was in the end kinda high maintenance (support mails = time) and I needed to pay taxes, so I basically got 0 or needed even to pay to keep this alive. But until then it was a nice source of passive income. I wish I could make more of these tools. It was nothing big but I spent at least 1 year developing it (I was still learning so I think I could make this in 6 months or less nowadays)
qxxx··on Japan ends distribution of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, discards 13M doses
That comment got flagged, probably because HN audience is mostly pro covid vaccine... "trust the science" or whatever.

Initially, the only thing stopping me from getting this vaccine was that people died of blood clots / heart attacks / strokes etc... and these vaccines are more like a Russian Roulette than some remedy. Especially Astrazeneca caused many problems.

And now after months seeing that these vaccines are not any effective and people are getting covid, especially after being vaccinated / boostered I ask myself, WHY should I get it? Why don't they can make a good and working vaccine - probably because they rushed it in few months. I am a developer and a good software needs time. You can still get the software few months earlier, but it will be full of bugs and could cause many problems. I don't want to have these problems in my body.

qxxx··on Ten Years of TypeScript
am I the only one who hates typescript?... development time is extended because you need to create all the types / interfaces for every variable and function. And you blow up the already complex / almost unreadable code with type definitions.

Some of the definitions can be very complex, a dev needs time to decrypt what other dev wrote and what I can finally use as a parameter in a function. Sometimes even if you put the correct parameters, it still doesn't work, and you need to fiddle around with webpack or other config files or spend hours on google to find a possible solution for a "simple" thing.

I just want to create code and solution... I used to work on a project with typescript only, and it was a huge pita, especially because the ts was very complex. Never again typescript projects for me.

qxxx··on IPv6 Only Cloud Server
I am using Hetzner servers too, and I am happy with them.
qxxx··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
in one project I was working on, we used a similar version of the 2nd method from the article:

Every table had the same table with _del suffix (eg. users_del). If a record was deleted, it was simply moved to _del table. We used code for this but later we started to use db triggers.

It worked quite well, and yes, there was always someone who wanted to undelete things. One downside was, if the schema changed on the source table, we needed to also change the schema in _del table. I like the approach with storing the data as json. That way there could be only 1 deleted_stuff table because it was looking quite strange having all the _del tables.

qxxx··on GPT-3 fails horribly, then I coax it into figuring out how to phreak a payphone
this is awesome! It was like a conversation between a teacher and student. A smart student. AI is kinda scary.
qxxx··on Show HN: Recut automatically removes silence from videos – built with Tauri
we linux users sometimes don't need any windows. Maybe you could also develop a cli version? Then something like this would be possible: recut input.mp4 --padding=123 --output=video output.mp4 btw, you created an impressive software. Very useful!
qxxx··on Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to all users
please someone fix the internet... I don't want to see any cookie popups on each site and accept / decline each cooke first only so I can see the content I want. I don't care about all these cookies and this should be managed by a browser. I hope what Firefox did is the beginning of such a fix.
qxxx··on Ask HN: Visualizing software designs, especially of large systems (if at all)?
I am a php developer and sometimes if I work on a complex project I use xdebug + profiler + cachegrind to generate flow diagrams. It shows not only how often a method was called and how much memory it used but also where the call came from and what happened next. It helps sometimes to understand the code better. I use it mostly for debugging.
qxxx··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
what I personally would like to see is a tool that helps me to undererstand the codebase. Maybe a sourcecode visualizer.

When I need to start on new projects with existing codebase I would love a visual map or something of all the components in the source code (before I dive into the sourcecode itself and spend hours or days to understand how everything works together. Personally I need this for php and javascript. I use xdebug profiler for php but thats too much info and I need to run the webapp. I need something that is able to anazyle and visualize the code without executing it.

qxxx··on Show HN: Monolith – A stylish and functional computer frame
looks cool but it would attract dust and hair + it would be a heater, don't need a heater in summer. Maybe ok for winter but not summer. And I bet it would be loud with all the open air fans.
qxxx··on Programming Burnout
people write that he is 14y old and that he is doing something wrong, thats why he is "burned out". I am 41 and have been a dev for over 20 years and I am also burned out... I still code professionally because thats the only thing I know but if I had a chance I would do something else. Nothing programming related. I am fed up with it. I used to be addicted to coding, I used to have side projects and coded all day long.. But today, it is just a pain in the ass. I switched my employer lately and it is even worse because I have to learn all new stuff. I thought it will be exciting, it was at first but now after few weeks it is all boring and I can't see it anymore.
qxxx··on It’s time we fix the unethical design of cookie consent windows
same! I also was thinking of enabling such stuff in a browser and not need to click accept on every friggin website... These windows are annoying and I never cared about the text or settings inside these messages. They want my cookies? ok no problem here, just let me see the site because I am in hurry. I don't care if someone is tracking me. My time is more precious and I need the information from a website than reading all the consent first and selecting which cookie I want to enable or disable.

I am using a browser extension called "I don't care about cookies" which is kinda a popup blocker for these messages. But I wish there was something better, like a setting in browser. Right now the internet is broken with these consent popups.

qxxx··on Mutagen – Cloud-based development using your local tools
with mutagen you have a 1:1 copy on your local machine and remote machine. If the connection drops, you have still all your files on eg your laptop, with sshfs your files are "gone" locally. If your connection is back again, mutagen will start the sync and upload/download files again (only changed) so there is again a 1:1 copy.
qxxx··on Mutagen – Cloud-based development using your local tools
I have been using mutagen for few years. It has been a life saver. I use it mostly to work on remote projects, mostly for development, rarely working on prod. So there I have my projects on some cloud linux instances and I work locally on windows, mostly phpstorm.

Having the webserver in the cloud and doing the heavy lifting is quite nice, especially if you work with phpstorm, which can be a resource monster for bigger projects, and working on remote projects with phpstorm built in sftp / file sync is a huge pain in the ass, really slow.

With mutagen it feels almost like I work locally. Thanks to the developer for this cool tool!

qxxx··on Switching to WSL2 with Fedora over plain Fedora install for development?
I am a webdev and I use mostly linux servers / docker for my job but still my work pc is windows 10 machine. WSL2 was incredibly slow for my dev job. It consumed a lot of RAM and CPU. I got permission problems inside wsl all the time - I edited files in some editor (eg phpstorm or visual code) and then the permissions were broken inside wsl2 for that file.. or the CPU started suddenly to go insane.

My experience was a pain in the ass. I dumped wsl2 or some virtualization and use this instead:

I have a small linux cloud instance with full ssh access. (I pay 4 USD / month). I use a free tool called mutagen to sync all my files on my windows machine to that linux machine. Sync is almost instant, it feels like working on local server.

Other plus, I can show to my coworkers and customers what I do on my server. Especially now when I work from home.

WSL2 is nice for smaller things, but I would not use it for full web dev server. I would if I could but it doesn't work nice for me. And somehow, it doesn't feel right... I know linux is fast but in wsl2 it is way slower.

qxxx··on The British Library puts 1M newspaper pages online for free
only 3 pages are free. To be able to view more you need to pay a monthly subscription.
qxxx··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
I used to use goDaddy like 15 years ago... than moved to namecheap. namecheap is so much better. I needed the godaddy support few times, it was always a terrible experience. And the UI was always bloated with unnecessary crap.
qxxx··on Germany's nationwide emergency warning day sees bumpy rollout
me and coworkers had the app (nina) and nothing happened... no message, nothing, if I opened the app also there, not a single text about some alarm. They should have used SMS
qxxx··on Only 9% of visitors give GDPR consent to be tracked
20 years ago we had popups, popunders, etc... nowadays we have this crap. I don't care about GDPR, I don't care about cookies... I just want the content. That's why I use a browser extension called "I don't care about cookies" which removes these things from websites.

Accepting to GDPR / Cookies: This should be some kind of a web standard , built inside a browser so user can accept it once, ignore or whatever, but seeing this on every website drives (drived) me nuts.

qxxx··on Ask HN: A way to adblock “we're using cookies” popups?
I use this on all my machines. I even donated to support the project. It works like a charm. It removes most of these cookie popups. I wish there was a better version like someone stated directly in the browser - currently this is a mess.
qxxx··on PlantNet – App that helps identify plants from pictures
Google Lens does this. But not only for plants. And it is quite good. I could identify most of the plants in the park. Cool to know there is some edible stuff in the park like ramson
qxxx··on How to Take Smart Notes
agree, this seems to be everything what Luhmann did. All the branches can be own sub bullet in roam or even a sub page connected to the parent.
qxxx··on Ask HN: How does your company keep track of lessons learned?
we have a wiki in microsoft teams, which no one ever reads...
qxxx··on “We will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020”
I installed Adobe Animate last week, it looks really similar to flash, they even use very similar concepts. I didn't try to write some code yet, but it looks like they use some kind of an action script.
qxxx··on Support for older versions of Internet Explorer ends on January 12, 2016
ok, microsoft wont support it.. but my customers will support it forever. As a webdeveloper i have still customers that are using internet explorer 8 because it is their company policy (big company)
