qxxx··on A browser-native classic Visual Basic VB6 IDE
really cool! brings the memories back.. I used to create few shareware products back then with VB3 - VB6.
qxxx··on Small programming tricks
yes! zoxide is also probably my most used tool. I did not map it to cd yet, but I use the z command to jump into directories indexed by zoxide.
qxxx··on Decompiler Explorer
really cool! I was finally able to decompile the keygenerator for one of my software. I lost the sources but I still have the keygen. It was a VB6 keygen. With AI and some of the decompiled code I was able to convert the algorithm to python. No more need to have windows to run a keygen.
qxxx··on OpenLogi
> Everything Options+ does, without the account.

does not support Logitech Flow.

I am using it all the time. Will it come one day?

qxxx··on Immich 3.0
yes. https://docs.immich.app/features/editing/ And it is very aware of exif. It also has AI features to analyze the photos (or videos) and you can for example search for "cat" and it will find all photos with cats.
qxxx··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
at my workplace some of the devs are using github copilot (their own private account). Boss said that our company already has copilot and everyone can use it instead of private accounts.. it is enabled in our microsoft account. Of course, this is not what the devs need. Now I understand why this is so confusing, because there are many copilot products.
qxxx··on After outages, Amazon to make senior engineers sign off on AI-assisted changes
so, seniors will review now the AI slop code.. I am also doing this task and reviewing this kind of code takes time as the code is often overengineered. Code works but will have potential bugs. I am not able to find every bug or implication quickly. But I am also using ai to review the ai slop lol, because why now. After that I am also quickly reviewing by myself.
qxxx··on Show HN: SQL-tap – Real-time SQL traffic viewer for PostgreSQL and MySQL
Just tried it out. Works fine. Love it! I tried it with a wordpress site. It is showing hundreds of sql queries in one request (thats probably why that wordpress site is so slow lol)

What I would love to see here is:

- some kind of sorting: eg. by excecution time or order. So I can see the slowest queries.

- search/filter feature.

- faster scrolling with pgup/pgdown keys.

- maybe how often the same query was executed. I could check the code and maybe optimize the queries.

qxxx··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
and then the effects wear of. You just feel "normal" or the same as before. I used to take ssri meds too. It was nice in the beginning. Stopping was a nightmare, I needed to taper down foe like half a year..
qxxx··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I don't know what you have, it works on my machine. Just tried it. I can grab the rounded corner (+- few px inside/outside). I can't grab the corner like shown in the gif. I am on Tahoe 26.2 (25C56)
qxxx··on Dealing with abandonware (2024)
reminds me of my own software I created and was selling online 20 years ago. I lost the source code but people still wanted to buy it. So I sold it for few years (shareware). I had a serial key generator for windows but it was annoying to do this manually.. I wanted to extract the key generation algo so it can be generated automatically after payment. I also tried many disassembly tools like ghidra, but without luck. I decided to stop selling / supporting the software. Nowadays, I still get the occasional mail from people asking where they can buy it, or of there are some updates.
qxxx··on Radio Garden
I am in Germany, I hear German ads there.
qxxx··on GPT-4o
the design is very human
qxxx··on Nix is a better Docker image builder than Docker's image builder
I tried nix (for spinning up dev environments). It is very slow compared to docker.
qxxx··on Spotlight: Sentry for Development
I also have no idea what it does. "Sentry for development", so it works like sentry but the errors are streamed to localhost??
qxxx··on Shazam for singing
Good job! I am still searching for a good solution which can identify songs by singing or humming the melody. There are sites (eg. soundhound) but these are not working all the time.. I think soundhound is working withoud machine learning. With the power of AI today, we could create something which works better. Like Shazam for music.
qxxx··on Remote work requires communicating more, but less frequently
in my current role at my current company, the opposite is the case. Daily sometimes hour long meetings talking about features and some crap and less time for the actual work. I hate it. Because I love to code, but I am constantly distracted. Everyone wants something from me... some people ask if I have time, some simply call, even if I am in another meeting already.
qxxx··on Lazygit: Simple terminal UI for Git commands
I have been using lazygit for years. Love this tool. It is fast, doesn't need much ram, I don't have to leave my terminal (I also use byobu / tmux for tabs). I also use lazydocker from the same developer.
qxxx··on Run and create custom ChatGPT-like bots with OpenChat
don't know what chatbase.co is but it seems to not be free. OpenChat is (?)
qxxx··on Witch – macOS window switcher replacement
personally I don't use the magic mouse or the touch pad (only if I work remotely and i have the macbook with me) but the magic mouse is terrible compared to normal mouse. I use a gaming mouse with a ton of macro keys. These keys do various things, most important keys are keys for switching desktops.
qxxx··on Witch – macOS window switcher replacement
yeah... I have the same problem. I click on the icon in dock and nothing happens. For example, Microsoft Teams.. I need this to open it and contact someone asap, but nothing happens. I need to search for the teams window on all the desktops. Or right click it and select the window, usually this works. But still frustrating. I have been using Mac for 6 months (before Windows and Linux) and Mac OS is sometimes frustrating when trying to do the most simple stuff like bringing a closed app back to front.
qxxx··on Ask HN: How do you approach a problem you are not sure has a solution?
I am not very religious but sometimes I pray if I have some "unsolvable" problem... No idea if it helps but it feels good to know that maybe "someone" will help me. I do this usually after day long debugging or problem solving without any result, right before bed.
qxxx··on Controlled burns can prevent wildfires; regulations make them nearly impossible
I was reading "Controlled burps help prevent wildfires"... time to go to bed.
qxxx··on ChatPDF – Chat with Any PDF
I saw it for the first time today. And this was exactly what I was searching for. So for me it is cool.
qxxx··on ChatPDF – Chat with Any PDF
yea, same here. I upload some test text. I asked how many children does my coworker have. It said "Your coworker has no children". I said but in the text it says that my coworker has 2 children. The answer was, "You are right, your coworker has 2 children as mentioned on page 2"
qxxx··on Universal Summarizer
no way! this can also summarize / explain code!? wow!
qxxx··on Universal Summarizer
this is really awesome. Especially for people who are dyslexic or can't concentrate for a while by reading longer texts. At least they will know what the article is about. I also like the "key points" button.
qxxx··on Summer Afternoon – A WebGL Experiment
it works for me, I also have RTX 3060, if I open chrome://gpu I see this:

Canvas: Hardware accelerated Canvas out-of-process rasterization: Disabled Direct Rendering Display Compositor: Disabled Compositing: Hardware accelerated Multiple Raster Threads: Enabled OpenGL: Enabled Rasterization: Hardware accelerated Raw Draw: Disabled Video Decode: Hardware accelerated Video Encode: Hardware accelerated Vulkan: Disabled WebGL: Hardware accelerated WebGL2: Hardware accelerated WebGPU: Hardware accelerated

qxxx··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)

qxxx··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
I sometimes use whisper to transcribe videos or audio to text. Works good and it is free.
