qwertygnu··on Keeping a long shell history
Perhaps an edge case, but what about all the commands you mistype or use the wrong flags for etc. If I want to recall a niche or complex command I used months ago I probably won't remember which of the 10 results that pop up was the right one.
qwertygnu··on You don't need to document everything
While this problem is growing for younger people, there are still many many many people who live reasonable non-scoial-media-driven lives. You probably just won't hear about them because...they don't promote themselves on social media. Social media both purposefully by the companies, but also by the nature of the content, depicts a world where everyone is on it. Everyone is doing this new trend, or is aware of this new meme, or has heard about this drama. It's toxic, it gives you FOMO to even think about stopping. It's messed up. It's sad to see it in my friends and family.
qwertygnu··on An app can be a home-cooked meal (2020)
Looking for a software job now, I'm wondering if I'm more of a home chef than a commercial cook...But when commercial cooking is fully remote and pays well...what to do...
qwertygnu··on Dooble Web Browser
Did you see the "Download Binaries" button on the top right?
qwertygnu··on AI-enhanced development makes me more ambitious with my projects
Are you serious? That's your gotcha? It's just doing some math over a dictionary, it doesn't matter the language or characters. So yes, a human can solve a novel problem.
qwertygnu··on California AG and state senators introduce bill to ban hidden fees
So what? I'd rather it be a corporate pain - in which people will get paid to deal with bs - rather than a buyer pain - in which all our lives are that much more frustrating. Plus, changing price tags? That's the pain? Changing tags??? Doing the math that's done at the register 1000x/sec and printing it on cards?
qwertygnu··on High-documentation, low-meeting work culture
Purely anecdotal, but I recall plenty of summarizing assignments, along with other reading comprehension tasks in my English classes. Though you're right about the minimum length padding thing reinforcing the opposite skill.
qwertygnu··on Tell HN: Somebody implemented something I wrote a blog about
I think their idea is that you don't have/shouldn't want a personal library because everything on Spotify is your library.
qwertygnu··on Maps from The End of the World Is Just the Beginning
It feels wrong to be happy that me and my country are going to (maybe) be (relatively) ok when the shit (that we threw) hits the fan for many other people and countries.
qwertygnu··on What game are you playing?
My personal experience is the opposite and most young people I interact with don't really box people in like they do in old movies. In high school at least half of the most advanced math/science classes were 'jocks'.
qwertygnu··on What are your most used self-hosted applications?
yep i definitely know some of these words

qwertygnu··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
What's this about Ben Franklin being anti-Semitic? All the search results I see are articles dispelling that myth. e.g. https://www.jewishboston.com/read/how-benjamin-franklin-beca...
qwertygnu··on Oggify: Download Songs Directly from Spotify

qwertygnu··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
In the context of our society and with "lots" meaning billions - yes it is immoral. I'm sure we've all seen a number of graphics/chats/whatever trying to show wealth inequality, but this is the best one I've come across. Would recommend giving it a look and then asking yourself if having a lot of money isn't immoral.

And I can't believe people unironically defend multi-billionaires.

In the US, we had Lingo - a game show with almost an identical premise that ran from 1987-2011.

qwertygnu··on OneBag: The Art and Science of Travelling Light
I check out OneBag stuff on the internet every so often. Sometimes I'll find good travelling tips or secondary uses for items. But so much of it is so wrapped in brands and buzzwords and precision it makes me laugh. It reminds me that even if I share some of the ideals with this community, I probably wouldn't travel well with a lot of them haha.

I'm with you: the more replaceable and maneuverable the better. My focus is on freeing myself from as many logistic problems as possible while remaining tolerably comfortable. I've travelled with one bag in a few different countries, doing a few different kinds of things. Every trip I get a little better and carry a little less.

qwertygnu··on Bitcoin consumed 134 TWh in total during 2021
Yes there are lots of problems with banking. Cryptocurrency does have a reason to exist, though of course we went and fucked it all up. It can help ordinary people outmaneuver oppressive regimes. It can perform that same core functions that banks can (i.e. keeping track of and moving around money) in a public and distributed way. The banking industry (often metonymically known as "Wall Street") is literally the canonical example of greed. There are problems with banking. In a better world, crypto can distribute the power of money. But, since it's a technology born within the system, it is instead used as a way of amassing value, and in the end only making the rich richer.
qwertygnu··on 4x Smaller, 50x Faster
Ohhh weird, I thought it was a literal mp4 on the front page haha. Must be one of my browser extensions messing with it!

qwertygnu··on 4x Smaller, 50x Faster
Went to https://asciinema.org/ and clicked the demo video. I'm a bit confused because it looks like future lines are being rendered after the cursor while lines are being typed. Is that...correct? It looks like either a blatant bug in their product (that they're displaying on their homescreen demo!) or on purpose for some reason I can't find.
qwertygnu··on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
Recently spent a long time agonizing over getting a new phone. This is the only phone that checked all my boxes (small, decent ram, storage and camera, headphone jack...) but it doesn't work on Verizon :(

Went with the Pixel 4a, we'll see how it goes

qwertygnu··on Iced: A cross-platform GUI library for Rust, inspired by Elm
I'm dislike the not-so-recent trend of companies/projects/libraries that co-opt common words as their name. "Rust" and "elm" and "iced" wouldn't normally have anything to do with computing, but it still feels like a small intrusion on our language.
qwertygnu··on Houses in Japan are going for as little as $500
How did this come about?? Seems super random but awesome.
qwertygnu··on America’s losing battle against diabetes
Are the alternative sweeteners any better for people's health and/or the environment? If not, then it's hard to say the tax "worked". If so, what are they?
