Mistake or not, life is all about leverage. And the balance of power has swung back from employee to employer now that we're done with the covid bubble. Managers must tame their unruly cattle and punish them for their past transgressions when the cattle briefly had a moment of increased leverage.
The sad part is that other industries are even worse about this, I know people in the medical system that have to buy gifts for people higher in the hierarchy in order to advance. So we're still kind of blessed for now, well until AI removes all our leverage at least.
To all the ANCAPs that thought they could stick it to the man using crypto. This guy is your best proof that its never going to be easy, never touch the systems ability to tax you otherwise you get the rod.
You can steal a few billion like how Sam Bankman did and get a few years in prison with the best amenities but whatever you steal must be taxed
Without a doubt, most people I know in this business optimize for networking and communication. The actual coding is done by eastern europeans and indians. Technical knowledge is more commodifiable than relations.
This response is totally unrelated to my post however it does bring up a good point. There is this narrative where we are all victims of the elites and everything bad is because of the elites and so on and so forth. This is just a means to cope and protect our ego because we basically arent doing anything to help our current situation so we need a scapegoat. It's common human nature
Its not even about the elites, its about human nature and incentives. And nobody is going to take my hamburger out of my hand just because some people in a third world country are starting to suffer from climate change. This mindset is genetically encoded
In my opinion the only solution is a drastic drop in number of human beings. Thankfully we wont have to do much since nature will do it for us when the droughts begin and the crops start failing. Its fun to think of how we will science ourselves out of this as we go over 8 billion people who all desire an ever increasing standard of living. However the only science we will science ourselves with are going to be fully autonomous suicide drones patrolling our borders for any straggling climate refugees and also drones inside our ruined cities patrolling for dissent.
That's my take on the thing at least
To be honest I've seen more than one man fall down the onlyfans rabbit hole. There's a lot of lonely men out there that are being taken advantage of and if AI can help them stop getting emotionally swindled then all the more power to AI. Of course, ideally, these men should improve themselves by making more money, growing taller at the gym and getting a new jawline but for some its not an option especially since dating nowadays is more of a competition than a means to understand one another.
Yup there has been junk science in the past due to bad incentives. Thats why its a very good idea to double down on these counterproductive incentives and also push everyone with a pulse into university so that he does cargo cult science based on these incentives because in this way we will uhh... make science better or something.
Also quite hilarious that your example exemplifies my point that a scientific discipline like computer science has its peak when its still in the domain of a few elite contributors. Which for computer science was at its very start, compare that to how it is today when when we invent ever more byzantine ways to create CRUD applications since the masses have been attracted to "computer science" to make money.
You might need to take another humanities major before understanding why I put the good old days in quotes, dont forget to publish a few papers on it to get that citation count up though!
Yes yes, more people means more progress which means line goes up which means we will all live in a utopia or something like that. That's why everyone is trying to escape their country and conduct a huge trek to reach countries like uhh India, China and so on and so forth.
This is a generalized problem because back in the "good old days" science was done by a select elite of passionate individuals (think physics between 1900-1950). Nowadays science is dominated by midwits that were forced to do "science" because of societal expectations that everyone needs to go to university and become "educated". The end result is an endless tsunami of grifters and people who cargo cult science by making a few pretty graphs and dropping some massaged data sets so that they can get their pretty baubles and titles. This is the full extent of modern scientific thought for 99% of people doing "science". Of course the passionate 1% are still there pushing the envelope further but more often than not they are inconvenienced by the modern academic system and all that it entails (think Grigori Perelman or others like him)
I still dont understand why Russia started all of this, why drag Europe into another world war scenario for a few villages? They could have played as kingmaker in the china/USA fight and become as rich as Norway if they had decent leadership. Now everything is ruined for a few villages on the border, nordstream and hundreds of thousands of dead young men and women
Who knows maybe they even lobbied for the result, its a big problem in nutrition science and how the "science" seems more like one fad after the other depending on which lobby sends more money
Yeah its very true, the incentives are screwed. I think you're touching on the key difference here. Someone like Euler would have had to been forced not to do math, it was his passion. But you have all these "scientists" going through the motions doing "science" because its their job. Passionate individuals will always be rare and the worse part is that the current scientific system in place is tailor made to root these passionate individuals out. A good modern example is Grigori Perelman.
Yeah the quantity and complexity of what you need to know now is daunting. But even so I dont think Einstein for example had to know the entirety of physics and math in order to produce a groundbreaking revolution in physics.
I wonder what percentage of academic work is based on cargo culting and practices like these. There are more "scientists" than ever and yet we dont really have a quantitative increase of people that are as productive as Euler, Einstein, Newton, Neumann or whoever you want to pick as a luminary
Alright I guess I really have to make that child now in order to satisfy my ego and show that I am actually capable of difficult things! That will help surely
I have satisfied all the desires that you speak of, hobbies, travelling and so on. But in the end only an absence of desire actually helped me, realizing the arbitrary nature of my goals and desires and how they all only provide momentary succor.
You might imply that I am unhappy because I say theres nothing worth it. However unhappiness only exists if you want something to be worth it and are disappointed by its nonexistence, you can be at peace with meaninglessness as long as you let go of desire
Of course there are many ways. But as a consequence of this it doesnt matter how you play your game, I have won mine. If by example you think winning your game requires X children then do it. But the feeling that you need X children is as subjective as my feeling of winning my game
To be honest I live in one of the most pampered eras doing the cushiest job from home. But even so I dont understand how people motivate themselves to make children, especially if they have a 1-2 hour commute and are forced by debt to take on shittier jobs than mine (probably 99% of jobs out there). Why even do this for 60 years and also condemn your kids to the same thing? It might seem like bragging but I basically won the game and I dont see anything worth it up here. I guess the struggle is what gives you meaning or something and children can be your cope because they will have a better life than yours if yours sucks.
