questinthrow··on Scientific fraud has become an 'industry,' analysis finds
Its odd how I viewed academia as a beautiful place where people were judged by merit not by politics. Then I joined it and realized its even more cutthroat than corporate politics, I guess you cant escape human fallibility no matter the system since all systems are reflections of human nature.
questinthrow··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
The elephant in the room is that America doesnt want Russia to lose. Russia is basically America's dog, used to scare European countries in spending either 2% or soon maybe 5% of their GDP to america in order to be "protected". It's a racket and both the USA and Russia are colluding.
questinthrow··on TSMC begins producing 4-nanometer chips in Arizona
Russia thought the same when it thought it could hide behind its nukes. Alas.
questinthrow··on The Swedish cabin on the frontline of a possible hybrid war
Russia also bombs people though.
questinthrow··on ChatGPT Pro
Question, what stops openai from downgrading existing models so that you're pushed up the subscription tiers to ever more expensive models? I'd imagine they're currently losing a ton of money supplying everyone with decent models with a ton of compute behind them because they want us to become addicted to using them right? The fact that classic free web searching is becoming diluted by low quality AI content will make us rely on these LLMs almost exclusively in a few years or so. Am I seeing this wrong?
questinthrow··on EU: Definition of "potential terrorists" opens door to broad information-sharing
Assuming I'm a politician, couldn't I use those imported people to stir up trouble so I can get enough political support to change legislation so it fits me like in the article here? More surveillance and control isn't a bad thing if you're at the top. Furthermore these imported people all have very simple "triggers" to make them do violent stuff so its very easy to use them towards your own ends.
questinthrow··on EU: Definition of "potential terrorists" opens door to broad information-sharing
Well the entire surveillance system we've slaved over to build during the ZIRP boom is ready to roll, AI was the final piece for cheap summarization of potential threats. Now the laws have to be drafted gently to boil the frog.
questinthrow··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
This has no relevance to the question
questinthrow··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
Why did he enter a country with an arrest warrant on his name? I don't understand it
questinthrow··on The Empathy Punishment
Its still empathy punishment at its core but starting from different incentives.
questinthrow··on The Empathy Punishment
Want to lose your faith in humanity? Do any public facing job for long enough and eventually you will be a soulless husk. Happened to my retail friends, happened to my doctor friends, and so on and so forth. As far as doctors are concerned I find the new meta of overworking those young doctors that are passionate to do cost cutting is the most insidious thing. Youre using their passion and empathy as bait to burn them out and make money. Makes me grateful I mostly interact with computers
questinthrow··on [dead]
Guess I'm going on keto then
questinthrow··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
Oh I wasnt envisioning this when I talked about the situation above. I guess my vision is 20 years from now where you will have LLMs scanning everything and predicting your danger level, if it arises over a certain threshold they just send killbots to deal with you if you dont comply by reporting to your local private prison
questinthrow··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
Shame, I would have enjoyed the kawaii look more than the DJI suicide drone look
questinthrow··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
The loop is intentional though. You need political will to pass laws like these so you have to create crises for it. But as you say its a self sustaining cycle and the end result will be fully automated repression. The old arguments of "Oh well the policemen have families too" will go away once drones can enforce your dictatorship
questinthrow··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
Why is anyone surprised about this? This will be a global phenomenon since LLMs together with ubiquitous surveillance brings down the costs of policing to 0. Just add police drones and you have a foolproof system. There is not a single country in this world whose leaders will decide that "nah we dont need perfect surveillance"
questinthrow··on Why am I dreaming I have an exam I didn't study for?
Yeah but it ain't a dream in my case
questinthrow··on Jim Simons has died
There are US senators that make millions by using their spouses as intermediaries to buy and sell shares. Insider trading as a crime only exists for those that are not well connected enough
questinthrow··on Jim Simons has died
While mister Simons might not be the best example, I sometimes feel that you can easily beat the market if you are well connected and have access to information that can move the markets before anyone else. For example how much know-how do you need to beat the market if you're a US senator? You know before anyone else what's going to happen regarding policy and can plan accordingly. There were rumours about this even regarding Simons' Medallion fund. About how all the talk about math and algorithms was just a red herring to divert from the fact that it was mostly insider knowledge that did the heavy lifting. Alas these rumours were never confirmed as far as I know.
questinthrow··on The Rise of the Forever Renter Class
"The pool of people you want to immigrate to your country is not large enough to support that strategy."

Is this true though? In Vancouver apartment prices have increased by 600% between 2000 and 2024. And Canada is still taking in between 500k to 1 million immigrants yearly. https://topqualitycanada.ca/2023/05/15/shift-of-two-decades-...

questinthrow··on The Rise of the Forever Renter Class
Wasn't this always the plan? If you combine scarce housing (by law or otherwise) and unrestricted immigration then you can get people to fight for scraps whilst taking 30-60% of their paycheck on average just through renting and also maybe through software subscriptions in the near future. In this way you can extract maximum productivity out of them because each month they're just a few steps away from homelessness. You also depress wages by a lot due to immigration which is doubly beneficial for the owning class AND you force the workers to be more productive because otherwise they'll be replaced by desperate immigrants. Its quite literally perfect from a capitalist point of view. The only thing that can put a stop to this are violent revolts. But if you have automated policing via drones and ubiquitous surveillance it should be easy to subdue the unruly masses.
questinthrow··on The NSA is just days away from taking over the internet
Its inevitable because of the power dynamics between democracies and totalitarian regimes. Democracies thought that with the internet they would topple totalitarianism because of free flow of information. They forgot that totalitarian regimes can just imprison and shoot all who have access to and propagate the information. Now the wheel has turned and the same regimes are weaponizing AI and shill farms to create enough propaganda to destabilize a democracy for the price of a few dollars. We're all headed towards a global race to the bottom because of it, the dream of the early internet has been crushed because of human evil.
questinthrow··on What will humans do if technology solves everything?
There seems to be an innate characteristic of technology that if you solve a problem using it, two more problems spring out. Not sure why that is but it seems life has become ever more complex and yet at the same time its not getting better
questinthrow··on Transformer as a general purpose computer
Could Transformers/LLMs take over custom software implementations given enough training? Why have so many custom ERP software suites or anything else related to the backend if a transformer can do the work?
questinthrow··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
The captain was disabled or the bridge? I dont understand how you set a course through a bridge like that
questinthrow··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
What was the ship captain's plan here? Just ram through the bridge?
questinthrow··on China's Age of Malaise (2023)
I dont understand, why did you think the original post said there's a relationship between global warming and resource shortages?
questinthrow··on China's Age of Malaise (2023)
What about water for the 4 billion people living in places with low water security?
questinthrow··on Return to Office Is a Mistake
There's a lot of people without scruples around. Humanity on average doesnt really bother with ethics that much.
questinthrow··on Return to Office Is a Mistake
Violence can also be automated though, we'll see how we fare against autonomous police and drones
