qihqi··on U.S. Wins First Place at International Mathematics Competition in Hong Kong
This is International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) not to be confused of International Mathematics Competition (IMC) which is a college level math contest (http://www.imc-math.org.uk/)
qihqi··on In a nutshell, why do a lot of developers dislike Agile?
I was at (unnamed-giant-online-retailer) and a team of 12 too. Our rule is to speak with one foot standing so you have to speak fast... It takes 90 seconds per person usually, sometimes ending with "hey Dave, I need your help in X, let's talk it afterwards".

Same process run by different group will feel different.

qihqi··on Why is Python slow
The exact issue is that it cannot. The reason is variables can change on the runtime, and often dependant on input. Say I can have : if blah: os.path.join = lambda ...

and then the pre-looked-up version of method are now wrong.

qihqi··on PHP Sucks
PHP is like Javascript in that both languages are now being used to do what they were not designed for.
qihqi··on PHP Sucks
Python's method(self) is very useful. It gives the ability to call methods in the same way you use functions, which is what they really are. It allows you do things like map(str.strip, list_of_strings).
qihqi··on Killing the 3.5mm Jack: How Simple Is Changing into Needlessly Complicated
Avoiding US would be a big reason why US airlines are not doing so well (among others).
qihqi··on Ask HN: I don't enjoy being a CTO. Now what?
Lots of university have MBA-MEng joint program that will award 2 degrees upon completion. MIT's LGO program is such a program.
qihqi··on Mongolia is changing all its addresses to three-word phrases
the 3-words replaces Number+Street name, not anything else. So you can just append the other information.

qihqi··on ‘Warcraft’ sets records in Chinese market while stumbling in the U.S
Warning: kinda of spoiler

At least there are some good guys among the bad and a bad guy among the good; so it adds some drama.

Tell me what action/fantasy/sci-fi movie is not good guy vs. bad guy ? More specifically, bad guys have an evil plan to do something destructive, and good guys somehow ruins it. Star War, X men, all the superheros ones, 007, and I can keep name more (at least that is the theme of the individual movies, if not the theme of the whole sequence).

The critique Warcraft received most is about the lack of character development; lack of a clear lead actor/actress. In some sense, it is not necessarily a bad thing because it breaks the old "one dude with protagonist aura that never dies" Holywood pattern.

qihqi··on Nest’s time at Alphabet
their revenue is probably pretty awesome... but hosting and streaming videos does cost lots of money too.
qihqi··on Alienation Is Killing Americans and Japanese
Not to mention that the definition of "family" is distinct too. If you ask an American, do you have family in this city, it is same as asking are you married/have kids. While people of other culture might answer, "yeah my mom is here".
qihqi··on Microsoft sells patents to Xiaomi
You mean Guam, US Dollars and NSA?
qihqi··on Palo Alto considers subsidized housing for salary up to $250K
East Palo Alto is only a bridge away.
qihqi··on Ask HN: How do you handle large Python projects?
+1 (From former SWE at Google).
qihqi··on Facebook will show ads to non-Facebook users on other websites
Analytics cookie lives in a different cookie space and is really hard to join it back to search cookies; also it is probably illegal for google to do so.
qihqi··on Uvloop: Fast Python networking
The answer of 2) is likely to be "no" as wsgi is synchronous in nature. The only way to run it async is through gevent.
qihqi··on Why Uber Won
I almost thought that they pay opposing players to not play with full strength when reading the first sentences. Glad you clarified.
qihqi··on Brain-controlled drone racing
When I can code by thinking in a headset, is the time to end the search of ergonomic keyboards.
qihqi··on Scala vs. Node.js as a RESTful back end server (2015)
Generally true. Though, in context of webapps, each thread usually works on one request. If your threads share (mutable) states in that case then something is VERY broken.
qihqi··on [dead]
Exactly my thought. Even the initial 162k at google seems like a better deal.
qihqi··on Open Source Project – View 689 Salaries Posted on Hacker News, Share Yours
half of those go to tax.
qihqi··on Open Source Project – View 689 Salaries Posted on Hacker News, Share Yours
Short answer: you are screwed. Longer answer: most people can hold half a year more.
qihqi··on Uber wants access to browsing history, bookmarks, and running apps
if all they do is send the data home, you won't know what they use it for。。
qihqi··on Apple's aging Mac Pro is falling behind Windows rivals
Basically saying that Apple's release cycle is slower for desktop and laptops than the PC counterparts.

Nothing really new here. Because there are several PC makers. Even if all of them releases new hardware in the same rate as Apple (say 2 year generation), having 3 of them can easily interscale release dates and make it look like PCs are releasing new stuff much faster.

qihqi··on Why Go gets criticized so much
Google has to statically link everything to produce a big binary with almost no dependency (besides syscalls), because it cannot promise the environment of the server, as you might get different boxes between deployments. So, it links all the jars and jvm into a huge binary, it's a pain to deal with that because it takes minutes to build and see your change.

And still, Java is almost used for front end only. When memory is not enough, you have to use C++.

qihqi··on Why Go gets criticized so much
Indeed Go is a pretty good "Google Language". It almost google's C++ with it's C style guide baked into the language. For almost every feature in Go (or lack of thereof), I can find a line in the C style guide saying the very same thing. (ban of exceptions, rvalue references, don't include what you don't use, CHECK vs. panick... etc)

(Though yet many teams didn't adopt Go. Because if none of your teammembers has Go readability then you have to rely on someone in Go team to do CRs. Those guys are not very pleasant to deal with.)

qihqi··on John Oliver explains why Apple is right about encryption
Usually it's not just the view of the comedians, but the collective view of the writers behind the show. Talk shows are a weird phenomena that exist only in few countries (to not say just US), but they do raise awareness on important issues for their audience (which are people what wouldn't care about that issue by themselves).
qihqi··on Why Are We Fighting the Crypto Wars Again?
Totally agree. Encrypting data then discard the key is no different than burning the data in physical media in the old days.
qihqi··on Microsoft Joins the Eclipse Foundation
MS realized that Windows as a platform is not attractive to developers. So it is desperately to win those developers back. On the consumer land, Windows is quite happy being the de-facto platform OS, so it doesn't bother to release anything in other OS (DirectX, Office, just killed Skype in linux etc).
qihqi··on Ten years on LinkedIn
Except, companies want to hire "experts". They want to hire people who have done X to do X, instead of people who haven't done X but want to do it.
