qes··on Why do printers still suck?
I had a B&W LaserJet for so long that I couldn't easily get it to work on Windows anymore, which is rare, especially for a basic printer. It seemed likely possible as a slightly later but very similar model was still in the included drivers, but it was a decade+ old.

Even color laserjets are decently cheap these days.

qes··on Coinbase Card
It seems like most people go with a simple FIFO or LIFO strategy, and crypto transaction tools support usually one or the other or both. Tracking cost basis for specific coins is considerably less common and I'm not sure what tools off hand even support that - none of the major exchanges that I'm aware of.
qes··on Mall real estate company collected 5M images of shoppers
> taking the picture of someone... allows you to have a total control over that person

Please, explain?

This sounds like nothing more than hyperbolic nonsense.

qes··on Governments Worldwide Consider Ditching Daylight Saving Time
Yes, and precisely on November 1st this year my child will start sleeping exactly one hour longer in the morning, because it is now official of course. Huge /s, obviously.

Whether or not children need more sleep in the winter, they'll by and large be waking up at about the same unshifted time tomorrow as they did today.

qes··on Governments Worldwide Consider Ditching Daylight Saving Time
MN here. I would be much happier with Daylight time year round as well.
qes··on What Bitcoin’s White Paper Got Right, Wrong and What We Still Don’t Know (2018)
and what is not easy to know or perceive is the gradual reduction of your currency's purchasing power over time due to inflating supply.
qes··on What Bitcoin’s White Paper Got Right, Wrong and What We Still Don’t Know (2018)
> if you had invested in November 2013

Cherry picking the singularly worst point.

> 4 years of being in the red is a hard pill to swallow

For which you would've been rewarded with nearly all of the months since 2017 with 500%+ gain, and as of now and also for quite a number of months since 2017, 1000%+ gain.

> there's no reason to think this will be true for another 10 years

Just one more bull run like those previous is going to put Nov '13 buyers at 10,000% gains, and if history comes close to repeating itself that will occur within 2 years.

> if you're not diversified

then you disregarded the single most repeated quip of investing advice in the bitcoin community - no more than you can afford to lose.

qes··on Netflix raises monthly charges for U.S. subscribers
all of the simple player boxes like roku et al have terrible support for playing plain old media files whether via USB storage or over a network (which is often not a feature at all, and forget the smart tv built-in players altogether).

I've wondered if that is intentional, to discourage casual piracy.

qes··on Aliens on 1k nearby stars could see us, new study suggests
Life on earth isn't an apartment building.

What if you could only tell if the building had ever caught fire and how long ago it first caught fire? You can't tell how many times it caught fire, or when the last time was, or how many times it almost caught fire but didn't, or if it would've caught fire later but only didn't because it had already caught fire before.

qes··on Gitlab was down
I find your comment odd, given the high percentage of "XXX hosted SCM is down today" posts that are about Gitlab.
qes··on Microsoft is letting employees work from home permanently
> Maybe this is overly simplistic... eventually the COL in SV will start to equalize with other places in the country like Chicago, won't it?

Chicago with an actual winter will likely never have the demand that California with it's year-round outdoor weather will have.

If costs were completely identical, would you rather live in Illinois or the Bay? How many other people you know would say the Bay?

qes··on Hiring for tech jobs has increased more than 100% in these Midwestern cities
In Minneapolis or the close burbs or the fancy farther out burbs (Minnetonka, Wayzata) a 6 br lakefront house in not-great condition is over $1M. If it's a nice house, good shape, way over $1M. But you can go 30 minutes and change outside Minneapolis and get a nice 6 br lakefront for like $750k.
qes··on What is the best dumb TV?
The uses you mention are common, but digital signage for advertising is big in retail. It's almost always trying to drive you to purchases.

Some network operators run 3rd party advertising to offset costs of running their network.

Also, if you see a sign at person level in a public space there's a high likelihood it's collecting demographics information on (age, gender, ethnicity - via video image processing) on everyone passing by while also trying to identity the mobile device in your pocket to geotag your advertising identity.

I work in a company that provides general interest "filler" type content for networks to display - news, weather, sports e.g.

qes··on Samsung Ads – Demand-Side Platform
"How to desolder power from your built in 5G network adapter"

I give it 20 years before we have to root our TV's to disable tracking while keeping it functional - and that might be optimistic - the industry could get there in under 10 if they tried hard.

qes··on Loss of smell could be a 'highly reliable indicator' of Covid-19, research says
My sense of smell has been not particularly great for many years - probably from some meth use as a teenager.

If covid gave me anosmia I doubt I'd even notice.

qes··on Windows XP leak confirmed after user compiles the leaked code into a working OS
> unofficial patches made to shore up any systems too embedded to move off XP still

Too embedded to move off XP but they're going to install a home brew version of WinXP? Extremely doubtful.

qes··on Tracking Mixed Bitcoins
> Although something to consider is liquidity issues.

Right... if you have tens to hundreds of millions of U.S. dollar's worth.

qes··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
If I had, let's say, less than $1000 worth of drugs - enough for a few weeks of personal consumption, but on occasion I sell a bit to one of my buddies. Does that make me a "distributor"? It did according to the law.

You're unlikely to find any realistic statistics on usage vs "distribution" due to that.

qes··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
> in state prisons, drug possession is about 3% of cases

You're going to need to source that unbelievably low number.

In my state, drug crimes represent the second largest proportion of prison inmates - a bit fewer than criminal sexual conduct a bit more than homicide: https://mn.gov/doc/assets/Adult%20Prison%20Population%20Summ...

qes··on Are we living at the 'hinge of history'?
Awareness of anthropogenic climate change goes back quite a bit further than 1896.

qes··on 179 Arrested in Global Dark Web Takedown
Six figure (albeit lower end of that, and without RSUs) SWE jobs exist in quantity all over the U.S. There isn't a single state where you shouldn't expect to be getting a six figure salary with no more than 5 years working experience as an SWE - and I think saying even 5 years is generous.
qes··on SteelSeries include adware in driver automatically installed by Windows Update
I've had only Logitech keyboards and mice on my main desktops for over 2 decades, on Windows, with SetPoint installed, and never once have I ever seen an ad pop up from their software.
qes··on The majority of 18- to 29-year-olds in the US are now living with their parents
Wouldn't you assume the age-in and age-out are quite similar?

Why would you lean towards assuming it differs by such an astounding amount over a relatively short time period?

qes··on Microsoft's underwater data centre resurfaces after two years
> an order of magnitude less than OPs figure for datacenter power-usage

You mean the figure that OP first increased by 4 orders of magnitude, right?

qes··on .NET Memory Performance Analysis
The article is quite specific to the .Net garbage collector. Only some of the most general concepts touched on in the introductory sections apply to other garbage collected languages.
qes··on The Fed now owns nearly 1/3 of all U.S. mortgages
You know the Federal Reserve is not a government agency, right?
qes··on Understanding OAuth2 and OpenID Connect
I never understood this either. So many apps pop up a window to enter my credentials to Google or Facebook or whatever in a manner that just screams don't put your password in here you have no idea who's hosting this form.
qes··on Scene bust triggered historic drop in ‘pirate’ releases
> almost every movie

Your kidding yourself. We could limit to movies released in U.S. theaters in the past 20 years and you'd still be completely wrong.

qes··on Intel Launches 11th Gen Core Tiger Lake
> a family member and software dev just bought the latest macbook pro coming from about an 8 year old macbook pro. Apparently he doesn't perceive much real world performance difference between the 2 machines.

I'd say the same thing about upgrading from an i7-6800K (2016 Broadwell-E) to a Threadripper 3960X. Barely a difference (my main work is a ~250k loc c# solution, also a similar medium-ish sized Angular app).

qes··on Sendgrid under siege from hacked accounts
> At work we had a Sendgrid account that got compromised

Parent commenter's account was compromised.

Are you assuming its SendGrid's fault the account was compromised? I'd assume the opposite.
