pyreal··on I Got Sick of Remembering Port Numbers
I created something similar to help me spin up complex apps in multiple worktrees with full port orchestration: https://outport.dev/
pyreal··on I miss thinking hard
The author clearly loves coding more than the output from coding. I'm thinking harder than ever and so grateful I can finally think hard about the output I really want rather than how to resolve bugs or figure out how to install some new dependency.
pyreal··on My LLM codegen workflow
I'm curious to see his mise tasks. He lists a few of them near the end but I'm not sure what his LLM CLI is. Is that an actual tool or is he using it as a placeholder for "insert your LLM CLI tool here"?
pyreal··on My LLM codegen workflow
Thanks for that clarification! I was wondering what skies had to do with skiing.
pyreal··on I'm So Old: Web Edition
I'm so old my first domain registrations were free. I had to register them via fax.

pyreal··on The first thing that ever sold online was pizza (2018)
I built an online computer store for my employer in late '94. It never went anywhere because the guy I worked for kept saying "What are you building this for? Nobody will ever put their credit card into the internet." We were making sales but they didn't have the vision to keep it up-to-date so it died on the vine.

At the time there were only two other online stores that I knew of - Internet.net and egghead.com.

pyreal··on Red Hat is discontinuing sales and services in Russia and Belarus
This is the "ice-bucket challenge" war.
pyreal··on Free public domain ebooks in PDf, ePub, mobi formats
That's a great idea!

Lots of ammo around here. A significant portion of the population hunts our own moose, rabbits, partridge, etc. I live on an island that's 100,000 sq. km. with fewer than 500k people - half of those live 500km from me.

Using an old technology called paper to print the books before trouble hits.
pyreal··on Free public domain ebooks in PDf, ePub, mobi formats
I'm doing a test of IPFS and just started uploading a library of public-domain books on a variety of topics that would be useful in a post-EMP or massive technical disruption scenario.

The books are mostly pre-electrical age - mid-1800s to early 1900s.

Check out the survivor-library here:

pyreal··on Watching video twice at 2x can benefit learning better than once at normal speed
I come from an English-speaking region where everyone speaks very fast. I watch most instructional videos at 1.5x to 2x just so I don't lose focus from enduring slow-talking "mainlanders". ;)
pyreal··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August
Kitboga would find this supremely ironic.
pyreal··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
World War 3 has started.
pyreal··on Grocy: web-based, self-hosted grocery and household management
I started writing a similar app in 2005 using Ruby on Rails. I called it Grocs and even registered the domain name grocs.com. I dropped the ball but I'm glad to see that someone else built it! Downloading now.
pyreal··on How fast do I talk?
I come from Eastern Canada (the island province of Newfoundland, to be exact), where we speak very quickly with a unique dialect that is highly abbreviated. (for example, "What are you doing?" becomes "whattayat?") I find it painfully slow to listen to non-Newfoundlanders speak. Happiest day of my professional life was finding out how to speed up YouTube videos. Default setting for any conference/instructional video is now 1.5-2x speed to just keep things moving.
pyreal··on PDC 1996 Keynote with Bob Muglia and Steve Jobs [video]
Thanks for this link! I was trying to remember the predecessor to ASP while watching the Jobs video. I hoped that one of the others might have contained an ASP demo, but never realized they would be still demoing IDC. I recall the pace of change being incredibly fast, as you said.

I was experimenting with IDC for a client project at the time but quickly switched to ASP as soon as the beta became available.

pyreal··on PDC 1996 Keynote with Bob Muglia and Steve Jobs [video]
I was already using the beta of Microsoft Active Server Pages when this presentation was given. ASP 1.0 was released in December 1996 and changed my web development career.
pyreal··on The World’s Oldest Tree Lives in Sweden
My reading of the Wikipedia article re: Kiidk'yaas suggests that it was felled by someone protesting protesting logging.

pyreal··on Attention Shoppers: Internet Is Open (1994)
Here's an internet store I wrote around that time (1994-1996):

https://github.com/steveclarke/vintage-online-store

I wrote it just on a whim for the computer sales company I was working for at the time. I had the store fully working and taking orders -- it just needed to be kept up to date. The feedback I got back from the owners at the time was, "Why are you making this? It's just a fad. Nobody will ever put their credit card number into the Internet." So the online store died on the vine.

pyreal··on Dropbox silently installed new file manager app on users’ systems
I love the app. I started using it immediately upon seeing it - then went looking for it all over my system when it disappeared. Makes using Dropbox much easier on my Mac - and I love being able to create Google Docs right in Dropbox from it.

pyreal··on Getting ‘screeched in’ in Newfoundland
It's not surprising when you understand that Newfoundland was a British colony until we joined Canada in 1949 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_Colony). My parents were born British so there's a stronger British/Irish influence here than Canadian in many ways.
pyreal··on Getting ‘screeched in’ in Newfoundland
Interesting to see an article hit front page of HN about my home province. I live very near the area that this story references. I have a 'Screech In' mobile app in the prototype phase, expecting a launch early next year. The app will help facilitate the many screech in ceremonies that happen throughout the year - and especially in the busy summer tourism season.
