pwarner··on Boeing quietly pulls plug on the 747, closing era of jumbo jets
Last fall I had the chance to fly SFO to LHR on an A380 and return trip on a 747. Such a smooth journey. Post COVID, I strongly suggest finding one of these for a future flight, if there are any left flying post COVID that is...
pwarner··on What Comes After Zoom?
wenc, do you folks in your organization use the channel messaging part of Teams? Aka the teams chat part, or do folks tend to use the one on one or small group chat. We see folks actively avoid the channel based messaging in teams. Like 99.5% of messages are in chat.

I assume AWS will start using graviton for their S3, EBS, ELB etc services aggressively?
pwarner··on Beware of the GIF: Account Takeover Vulnerability in Microsoft Teams
Yeah Teams may be the best "do it all", but Zoom and Slack are far better at their focus. Slack makes it very well known they don't use the calling built into Slack, they use Zoom.
pwarner··on Google Duo rolls out realtime AV1
The channel or team messaging part is unusable. You can't leave channels, you can't ever get the right people in a team. Everyone just ends up using group chat, which is way more closed. For channel messaging it does not compete with Slack.
pwarner··on Google Duo rolls out realtime AV1
I am not sure Teams does anything well, but it does many things! Actually, I take it back, it is the best interface into SharePoint!
pwarner··on Zoom’s 90-day plan to bolster key privacy and security initiatives
I think this is the Zoom response to that one: https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/04/03/response-to-resear...

As I read it they accidentally routed some data to China based servers for a month (Feb 2020) due to a config mess up during their crazy fast scaling period. This is since fixed.

pwarner··on Google allows G Suite administrators to monitor and audit user emails
I think the admin always has the power to see things in all tools unless it's true E2E encryption which I think is very rare in corporate environments, or even non existent?
pwarner··on Microsoft: Cloud services demand up, prioritization rules in place
I think Azure also has more regions than AWS, but yet a smaller overall capacity probably, so it's gotta be harder to keep space capacity. It's notable the shortages are isolated to specific regions. They were possibly small to start and so it probably didn't take as much to hit capacity there? Just a guess.
pwarner··on Microsoft: Cloud services demand up, prioritization rules in place
Yeah Slack themselves use Zoom. Slack is a channel based messaging tool, it integrates with best of class video tools like Zoom and file storage tools like Box or even SharePoint.

Teams does it all OKish, although the channel based messaging is probably the worst part.

It's sort of wrong to look at Teams as a Slack replacement. Well, it is for who just want chat, and don't care about channel messaging.

pwarner··on Microsoft: Cloud services demand up, prioritization rules in place
AWS spot prices are rising last 3 weeks.
pwarner··on AWS spot instance prices rising?
Oh, I see Azure is struggling more indeed. They have smaller overall size, and way more regions so that must be a really hard combo to maintain proper spare capacity.

Thanks for confirming. Let's hope this is all we see. Signed up for your newsletter!
pwarner··on AWS, Azure, and GCP respond to cloud report
> Azure offers a large number of configuration options that can be tricky to get right

That's basically the summary of Azure. I think all that complexity ends up hurting more than it helps, not just on the end user side, but in terms of lower reliability from the provider side.

pwarner··on Why does gigabit internet via coax cable not offer symmetrical speed like fiber?
I don't think we need symmetrical, but could we get 4:1 ratio instead of 20:1 please? PIN fiber that Verizon FiOS uses is 4:1 at the physical layer, or it was with BPON and GPON standards. I did not follow. I imagine they can sell symmetrical since most people don't use much upstream. Oversubscription is standard and works great in almost all cases.

Tony Macgee of Lagunitas has a full on book on this. Fun read. Henhouse and Lagunitas are basically across the street from each other and both have great beer. Bonus they are next to my office!

pwarner··on PG&E Outage Darkens Northern California Amid Wildfire Threat
It's very possible there are politics at play here, but the NWS forecast sounds like something we won't get every year? Although we had it in 2017 in the North Bay and 2018 in Butte county, so maybe it is going to be common?

pwarner··on Flight risk: can we take the carbon out of air travel?
Wouldn't we focus on taking it out of most other things first? Solve electricity and land based transport first and figure out sea and air later? I not read the article so down vote they explain why we should focus on this when we are so far from solving other easier problems.

pwarner··on A Profile of Zoom CEO Eric Yuan
Teams video and audio is the best part of Teams. Teams was launched as a Slack killer, but in reality I think it's closer as a replacement to Zoom than Slack.
