puttycat··on Strutt's Powered Wheelchair Is Not a Wheelchair (For Legal Reasons)
I can't stand the word "incumbent" anymore. I have only ever seen it in election contexts.

Now that Claude is using it as a fancy shortcut to "current", it's everywhere. I even hear people who would never think to use this word say it in face to face conversations.

puttycat··on Claude Opus 5.5
> Because Opus 5.5 is comparable to Claude Mythos 5.1 in biology and cybersecurity, we’re deploying it with safeguards similar to those on Claude Fable 5.1

According to their ToS, conversations flagged by the guardrails when using Fable are stored longer for moderation. That included Fable's guardrail for AI research. Moderation can mean a human looking at your conversation.

Does that mean that I can no longer trust Opus with not snitching my AI research to Anthropic either?

puttycat··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Yes. And in combination it completely rules out the suggestion that the Netherlands attack is some kind of local activist protest. (The France attack resulted in several grave injuries and could have just as easily resulted in dozens of deaths.)
puttycat··on Top mathematicians are outraged by OpenAI's methods
Quite appalling to open a "journalistic" report by ridiculising the people you report on:

> Not since Socrates complained that the written word might make people lazy about remembering things has there been such an outpouring of angst against a new technology in the world of academia.

puttycat··on GPT-6 Astra
Intelligence is actually correlated with the ability to simplify complicated things. Occam's razor. Compression as comprehension.
puttycat··on Show HN: Shoehorn – Quantize any model down to run on your machine
This is really impressive. Can you say a bit about the underlying process? I'm guessing this is post-training qantization? Isn't PTQ also resource-intensive? (Ie might not work on any machine)
puttycat··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
Not sure that's correct. You're replacing a simple visual recognition problem with something similar to the halting problem (but maybe less fatalistic, depending on the formalism you're working against ie DOM vs js).
puttycat··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
Opus 5's language is just terrible
puttycat··on Discovery Loop
What's the business model of these startups?
puttycat··on Scope of Hacks on U.S. Water Supply Widens as Evidence Points to Iran
> he brought these attacks with his war

I'm no Trump supporter and this war was a big mistake, but justifying a nation poisoning another's civilian water supply is a bit upside down.

puttycat··on Clifford Sosin on X: "Maybe Intelligence Ain't All That" / X
> Video models can certainly predict what stirring cream into coffee does.

Not sure that physicists and professional animators would agree.

puttycat··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
As mentioned in other comments, what you call the past has been known for at least 30-40 years to be soon obsolete. They had enough time to prepare to this.
puttycat··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
It is very much so supported by facts, see sister comment.
puttycat··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
This. Add to the list: consuming huge amounts of meat while depriving themselves of AC "for the planet".
puttycat··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
There are still hardly any, Paris, July '26.
puttycat··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
The thing is that both sides have a point. European countries (notably France) have known for at least 30 years that this was coming, but was ideologically insisting not to install proper AC or even ventilation in public spaces and transport. This does not contradict the wider angle about Americans ignoring climate change.
puttycat··on If You Build It, They Will Come
Good Toastmasters clubs are a good example of this.
puttycat··on The Isomorphic Labs Drug Design Engine unlocks a new frontier beyond AlphaFold
What technical advancement made this possible? The text is vague about this.
puttycat··on Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt
The comments just mean they used AI to do that in 3 seconds
puttycat··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
France is indeed ridiculously bad at ventilation (not to mention air conditioning). Restaurants, offices, even gyms - most have bad to non-existing ventilation. Coming from the States this is just insanity.
puttycat··on Claude Code is steganographically marking requests
Yes, a very easy and destructive man-in-the-middle attack seems likely.
puttycat··on Claude Code is steganographically marking requests
A periodic reminder that companies are paperclip optimizers that will stop at nothing to protect their profits and existence.

If you are developing anything in AI or related domains that is of immediate value and/or in competition with Anthropic (and the like), DO NOT use a CLI programming agent. Preferrably obfuscate your code and gut it of sensitive IP before showing it to agents. Do not trust the dont-train toggle.

puttycat··on Ending respiratory infections
+1 for office work as disease source. Plus taking public transport (mostly underground trains). Today I avoid the subway almost completely, taking my bike almost everywhere, to avoid getting sick during winter. (No kids though)
puttycat··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
I have two languages defined in iOS (English and French) and the native swift keyboard recognizes which language I'm swifting in.

Maybe this is supported only for specific language combinations.

puttycat··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
iOS has that.

puttycat··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
What do you mean? iOS has a native swift option.
puttycat··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
My guess is that an AI layer already present _is_ the reason you're seeing these unhinged suggestions. Earlier generation iOS keyboards were much more accurate and reasonable.
