pupdogg··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
I'm not too sure about this. I use AppleTV with our industrial display playing back HDR content without any issues. Here's a 4K video playing via AppleTV on a 16ft x 9ft indoor display at our facility: https://imgur.com/a/3O58O8T
pupdogg··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Yes, we support OLEDs and QLEDs as is. However, "Dolby Vision and HDR10+ * VRR, preferably with G-Sync and Freesync" are some new buzz words for me. Are they just marketing buzz words or do they actually translate to physical or software specs for the controller board/firmware?
pupdogg··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Small world! Sterling Heights here. Automotive manufacturing plants is a big vertical for us.
pupdogg··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Yes, going to take care of that. Thanks for the heads up. I really looked that one over...didn't think too much of it as the domain was available. It's hard to do anything the easy way nowadays!
pupdogg··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Did AppleTV output change or is it still HDMI?

I haven't done much market research in that aspect yet but we currently sell our industrial 70" display @ around $9-12k/ea depending on the configuration (ie type of metal shell aluminum/stainless/carbon-steel, ethernet support, protective polycarbonate screen in the front to prevent damage from industrial machinery). However, I expect the consumer grade to be much more cost effective considering the sizes in demand would are much smaller (32-40"). Since I have more experience in sheet metal design/fabrication for the enclosures, I still plan on building these TVs inside a metal shell (specifically aluminum) instead of a plastic housing like your standard Samsungs/Vizios. I'm open to market consensus as to what is the most favorable price point for the size.
pupdogg··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Aah, gotcha! Boy, I really overlooked that one. My primary goal was to come up with an easy to remember name/domain that expressed "DUMB TV" and dumbo.tv was available. Oh well, I'll have to rethink that part through a little more.
pupdogg··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Wait, this Disney lawsuit thing is news to me. What's up with that? You're right, in the consumer market, there's a much higher demand for 32-40" display. Our UHD controller can easily handle that and comes with 5x total input ports [ 3x HDMI(V1.4a), 1x HDMI(V2.0), 1x DisplayPort(V1.2) ] and can run 3840x2160 or 4096x2160 resolutions @ 120Hz.

I've designed and built many such TVs for the commercial/industrial vertical. I am currently working on developing such a TV for the consumer market and launching it under the name DUMBO.TV

Let me know your thoughts. Reference pix of 70" industrial display using Samsung LCD panel and in-house LCD controller with physical OSD menu buttons along with IR/RS232 control capability: https://imgur.com/a/k6zrH3s

Pretty amazing company. They're a big Ruby on Rails shop. At least they were back in 2016. FYI, I was offered a position there but didn't take it up due to long commute.

This is absolutely correct! I've been watching Putin's public briefings for over 10 years and have to say that when he expressed his concern over NATO Allies invoking Article 5 to the reporters, he was out of his normal character (calm, collected, and thoughtful)...meaning that he was NOT KIDDING about using his hypersonic nuclear arsenal on anyone that wanted to interfere!

pupdogg··on Tesla Australia admits its sales figures were wrong
Where did the Cybertruck go? Late 2021 to late 2022 to now early 2023...the sheer volume of $100 deposits totaled $20MM, just 3 days after announcement.

Also, now that Tesla has had approx 14 years since its first sale, has anyone performed economic analysis of personal impact on environment vs maintainability of the vehicle? A few of my personal friends who bought their Tesla around 2015-2016 recently got rid of their vehicle for pennies on the dollar becuase they didn't want to pay $23-28k for a new battery installed. How is this better than paying $3-4k/year on gas and having significantly less maintenance expense over lifespan of the vehicle?

pupdogg··on Treasury reconsiders IRS’s use of ID.me face recognition for web
> Why does the IRS even think they need this?

It is very common for the government to use its various arms to institute large data collection efforts in the name of national security. A selfie video of yourself on a modern day phone provides for the government a high definition facial recognition vector for identification purposes. I'm sure you can imagine all of the use cases of having this critical data.

Personal Story: My wife and I travelled abroad right before COVID in early 2020. On the way back, we didn't interface with any customs agents at the airport. Instead, there was a portable robot that took our pictures and advised us to proceed to exit. I can only imagine which image database it referenced for a perfect match to allow entry (passport, driver's license, social media?, etc). From a security standpoint, I would assume that the matching capability/requirement of such system had to have been best of the best.

pupdogg··on Bridge collapse in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park
US is set to collect approx. $3.86 trillion in taxes this year and 18.5% ($715 billion) of it is allocated for military budget and 1.3% ($51 billion) of it will be handed-out as Foreign Aid to other nations while another 8% ($300 billion) will be used to pay interest payments on our national debt. Only 3% ($115 billion) is allocated to modernize the bridges, highways, roads, and main streets that are in most critical need of repair. Maybe the government is the largest/legal ponzi scheme after all.

Edit: I provided a wrong figure earlier for Foreign Aid. As per @whatkim, the correct amount should be approx. 1.3% ($51 billion) for 2021.

You can see a complete categorical breakdown here: https://datalab.usaspending.gov/americas-finance-guide/spend...

Still, there are a few areas of concern:

1. Income Security > Other Income Security $831 billion

2. Education is 41% of the military budget! $296 billion

pupdogg··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 15
Coming from a Ruby background, I got into Swift by first learning SwiftUI right around when COVID started. I know that sounds backwards but it actually made understanding Swift a lot easier. Overall, I was impressed (specifically with SwiftUI) as it was fairly easy to understand. Sometimes I wish I could do web layouts using SwiftUI. Clojures, Grand Central Dispatch, and Decodable in Swift took a bit longer to get used to.
