punchclockhero··on Work after work: Notes from an unemployed new grad watching the job market break
Bonuses. Usually there is no penalty for failed referrals, so the more people they refer, the more likely someone gets hired and sticks around long enough for the bonus.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2025?
Study for and Pass the CKA exam

Ansible

Improve my programming, either via CS50 or the new edition of Think Python

Put my synth collection to use

punchclockhero··on Ask HN: What are you reading Feb 2024
Nice to see another 40K reader. Recently I realised there are new Inquisitor books so I binged Penitent. Felt like reuniting with old friends.

On to The Magos now, I usually get my Black Library fix from bundles, but I might make an exception for this one.

punchclockhero··on Show HN: NowDo – MacOS todo app for procrastinators
Ctrl + Opt + D also conflicts with Rectangle, which is a more popular MacOS window manager.
punchclockhero··on Hacking a Washing Machine?
There's the OpenWasher project https://github.com/smoluks/OpenWasher-V2

Not many compatible models, but might be a good starting point.

punchclockhero··on Powerful new obesity drug poised to upend weight loss care
And then there's the plot twist. On-label use is for type 2 diabetes, which is considered a consequence of obesity. So it's actually about prevention vs treatment.
punchclockhero··on Powerful new obesity drug poised to upend weight loss care
This is rough. Is it still under patent protection?
punchclockhero··on Modders are using AI to put voice acting in Morrowind
Started playing Mass Effect with Knights of the Old Republic fresh in my mind back in the day. It was so jarring hearing the same voices with different characters.
punchclockhero··on Last.fm turns 20
Been scrobbling nonstop since 2006. Discovered last.fm while digging through Amarok's settings.

So many memories, discovered genres, met friends, found a subculture where I belong (more like the subculture found me with the neighbor system)

punchclockhero··on Last.fm turns 20
Aw shucks,low compatibility.

punchclockhero··on Swedish amateur archivist “Rosa Mannen” shut down from YouTube again
Now that's a name I haven't heard in a while. Used to download his music video rips off thepiratebay.

Much respect to media hoarders of all creeds.

punchclockhero··on Bluetooth relay attacks allow Tesla Model 3 / Y to be unlocked and driven away
Highly unlikely to find a new one as EuroNCAP and company have started to dock stars for missing active safety features (AEB, lane assist, sleepiness detection, etc.) and low stars are a sales killer. Soon they may even be required by law.
punchclockhero··on Bluetooth relay attacks allow Tesla Model 3 / Y to be unlocked and driven away
The Skoda version (Citigo-e iV) is even more austere. Manual mirrors and rear windows with a lever like the little triangular windows of old. My guess is that the corners were cut to fit the lane assist system and keep the low price.
punchclockhero··on Reinstating our SAT/ACT requirement for future admissions cycles
Same here in Bulgaria. The only extracurriculars that influence university admissions are subject olympiads. Students who reach the national finals are exempted from the corresponding tests (max grade assumed).
punchclockhero··on The history of the end of poverty has just begun
Correction, higher education is dirt cheap, not free. My English degree cost me about $600 in tuition, CS is about double that. Of course international students pay more, but it's still cheap by Western standards. Healthcare is free, at least in theory. In practice you may need to grease some palms to get decent treatment. There is a thriving private system, not too expensive either. American-style health insurance is a standard perk for tech companies. Hopefully it won't end up driving prices to the roof.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
Second dose on Sunday. Glad I waited until the healthcare system got flooded with Pfizer, as I'm at risk of Astra-Zeneca side effects. Got it so I can travel later this summer.
punchclockhero··on 4chan founder Chris Poole has left Google
There's always been moderation for illegal content and the janitors do a good job deleting porn from the worksafe boards.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: How do you make/get your coffee whilst WFH?
I like Moka pot coffee, but cleaning it sucks, so I got myself an Ikea French press. Still keep a jar of instant just in case.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: What do you listen to while you code?
For thought-heavy work: Data center sounds from mynoise.net

For rote work: hard techno, schranz or happy hardcore

punchclockhero··on California’s affordable housing problem is really a national one
Now I want NIMBYs in city builder games randomly preventing the player from creating and/or upgrading zones. Chances are they will be treated like the nobles in Dwarf Fortress, that's forced to leave or killed off in spectacularly creative ways.
punchclockhero··on Parents of daughters are more likely to divorce than those with sons
Given the recent research linking advanced paternal age to a number of conditions, freezing your sperm is quite prudent even if you don't get snipped.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: Where will communities hang out in the upcoming decade?
Private IM chats populated mainly by IRL friends/acquaintances. I feel like internet only friendships are going extinct.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: What's Life All About?
Quoting Conan the barbarian.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: What do you keep learning and forgetting about?
FTP commands

At one point I just gave up and started using Filezilla.

punchclockhero··on Fuck You Sunday
Many burnt out people can muster just enough enthusiasm to pass an interview.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: How did you get started in tech and/or Linux?
Linux: back in 2006 Windows crapped out so hard, I lost some stuff that have been downloading for week and I remembered there's another OS called Linux and went to the local Linux user forum.

Tech work: dating programmers and hanging out at hackerspaces and open source conferences. Still have moments of doubt whether I'm the real thing or just a groupie.

punchclockhero··on The Uncertain Future of Ham Radio
Got the Baofeng and the callsign, in that order. Got licensed because it costs around $10 for the exam with no mandatory classes and to use Echolink. Don't see much point in it as I don't like to talk and the funny chatter is on the unlicensed bands anyway.

Seriously, PMR446 near hotels and nightclubs is pure gold. Local gangsters' seating preferences, awkward staff romance, weird room service orders, you name it.

punchclockhero··on Eastern European Movies
If that's the catchphrase I think,"flipping fascist melonfarmers" is the tamest translation of Serbian profanity ever.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: Not smart enough to a programmer, where to take my life from here?
I remember reading an old post on here by some anon who managed to make themselves enjoy math using a carefully crafted psychedelic trip. Could be a fluke on the level of curing OCD with a gunshot, but also an interesting possibility.
punchclockhero··on Ask HN: How did you recover from Covid-19 and how are you feeling now?
Not tested too, but symptoms and duration were not like the usual cold for me.

No sense of smell for about 10 days which is the most unusual symptom. Taste was affected too, so I barely ate the first week or so. Brutal headache the first 2-3 days, got mistaken for caffeine withdrawal. Muscle aches and chills for the first 3-4 days. Fitness band reported a higher heart rate than usual. Cough was phlegmy and not too severe, could will myself not to cough. Lung feeling similar to bronchitis, went away after two weeks.

There were warnings about NSAIDs in the news at the time, so I took nothing.
