pugz··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
Was that the marginal rate that you paid or the effective rate?
pugz··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
I just looked into it now. As of 2018, apparent 38% of Americans are obese and 28% of Australians. So it's probably a difference that _does_ factor into costs, but I wouldn't know how much.
pugz··on The fraying of the U.S. global currency reserve system
Australia being an island has little bearing on this. It's not like the Covid situation in the USA is because of infected people crossing the border illegally: it happened because of legal travel.

Trump's so-called China ban was a farce. It didn't stop USA residents from flying into the USA, it didn't even stop the immediate family of residents from flying to the USA.

Australia closed all travel from China initially and later from everywhere else in the world. There's plenty of room for criticism as they also stopped Australians from returning home, but the results are tough to argue with.

pugz··on A Month of Terraform
I mostly agree with you, but on this one:

> Difficult to assess what's going to be a replacement (other than browsing the doc)

Do you know of any better solution than docs? Or better implementations of docs? I struggle to imagine how they could handle this better - but I've been using CF for so long that my imagination is limited.

pugz··on The Serverless Revolution Has Stalled
If you're doing anything through the GUI, that is absolutely problematic - for all the reasons you mention. You should be using CloudFormation or Terraform exclusively and configure nothing through the GUI.

The Apache templating language is awful, no question.

pugz··on .NET Orleans
Do you know if Sumeet has ever used Orleans? I'm going to need to see a Sumeetestimonial before I commit to a new framework.
pugz··on Ontario doctors sign letter to Premier advising against sweeping lockdowns
Thanks for sharing, I hadn't heard about that (I live in Victoria) That said, 500 docs out of ~31K in the state doesn't strike me as very compelling.
pugz··on Several Apple Services Down
You think state-sponsored attacks are just as likely a source of outages as programmer error? Either you think the world is a much more perilous place than it is or you give programmers much more credit than they deserve.
pugz··on Moving 25TB data from one S3 bucket to another took 7 engineers and 2 full days
S3 Batch Operations can also invoke a Lambda function per object, so it's straightforward enough to create a function that calls DeleteObject() and let Lambda scale out to silly levels.
pugz··on Let’s avoid talk of ‘chemical imbalance’: it’s people in distress
I agree in general that prescription antidepressants are over-prescribed. Unfortunately there are few medications that can ameliorate shit life syndrome.

That said, some people do have genuine chemical imbalances. I've had bipolar disorder all my life. My cocktail of medications has allowed the last 11 years of my life to be the most productive, stable and happiest. There are of course side effects - and I can understand why some people find them intolerable. I have tremendous difficulty ejaculating, for example. But on balance it's worth it as a) I'm alive and b) my quality of life has improved.

Likewise for my grandmother, my mother, my aunt and my cousin. Bipolar disorder ravaged our families at various points and medication has improved our lives immeasurably in various ways. I just feel for earlier generations that didn't have an explanation (let alone cure) for their woes.

pugz··on Your DS18B20 temperature sensor is likely a fake, counterfeit, clone
No one is disputing that "they have the absolute right to create drivers that only work with their products in order to assure quality, performance and function." - that's a given.

Would you say that they also have "the absolute right to create drivers that sabotage counterfeits of their products"?

That's a different argument. You could argue that they should have the right given that (elsewhere you have argued) their governments have abrogated their responsibility to protect their IP. And that would be an interesting and compelling argument. But it's entirely different to "[having] the absolute right to create drivers that only work with their products in order to assure quality, performance and function." - and it would be disingenuous to keep arguing that.

pugz··on Makers, Don't Let Yourself Be Forced into the 'Manager Schedule'
I've been successfully managing a bipolar disorder for over ten years - and unsuccessfully for years prior to that.

In my _personal_ experience, manic phases last 2 weeks to 2 months, followed by 4-10 months of catatonia.

It is approximately the same for my aunt and grandmother. In their cases, lithium and electroconvulsive therapy were the only things that work. For me, lamotrigine and modafinil are life-changing wonder drugs.

That said, people in my group therapy reported cycles as short as days to weeks - rapid cycling, as you say.

pugz··on Why the French love to say no
It's quantum agreement. You both agree and disagree until someone clarifies, at which point it collapses into a classical argument.
pugz··on Researchers identify sleep as a reason why personality traits predict longevity
Why do you say modafinil is not for long-term use? I take it 7 times a week, have done so for years and my doctor tells me it's likely that I will be taking it as long as I need it (in my case: a lifetime, as it's treating a chronic condition).
pugz··on Google cans the Chromecast Audio
The iPod Nano lasted 12 years. The Chromecast Audio lasted 3 and a bit.
pugz··on Show HN: Shellvault – Cloud SSH terminal accessible from any browser
I'm planning on launching something similar-ish in the next couple of weeks, so your feedback would be tremendously appreciated.

> I think there's something of pretty great value here

What specifically do you think has great value? Is it the nice web-based UX? Something else?

pugz··on What Are Capabilities?
(You're probably already much more familiar with it than I am, but if not:)

Your example of the file open dialog box is identical to what Apple did on MacOS when they implemented sandboxing. Rather than using regular paths in NSString objects, they return you an NSURL with a "security scope" - a capability. These can be saved and reused across process terminations.

The docs provide useful information how they are used: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/foundation/nsurl

pugz··on Open Source .NET three years later
My 2c: I never had any interest in writing C# on the .NET platform until it was open-sourced and added first party-supported cross-platform support with the introduction of .NET Core.

Nowadays it's my favourite language I write in - it has _excellent_ tooling, especially JetBrains Rider IDE. The open-source library ecosystem might not be as broad as NodeJS or Ruby, but it's high quality and growing all the time.

pugz··on Yahoo discloses hack of 1B accounts
I use 1Password as my 2FA app for Google services. I only set it up relatively recently so maybe support for non-SMS is new. Or region-based?
pugz··on New for AWS Lambda – Environment Variables and Serverless Application Model
This is a _fascinating_ idea. You could make an image that queried the Lambda API, downloaded all Lambda functions (and their configuration) and served up exactly those functions. Make it completely turnkey.

Hm...

pugz··on SpaceX plans worldwide satellite Internet with low latency, gigabit speed
He _did_ say on the same continent. 150-200ms within Australia would be considered pretty slow.
pugz··on Can Psychiatry Turn Itself Around?
Have we met? I'm a person who takes medication daily for the last 7 years for bipolar and it has improved my quality of life immeasurably. I have a great job, a great relationship, own a house, have a cute dog and my professional and personal relationships have never been better. I haven't seen the inside of a hospital in 7 years.
pugz··on Show HN: A histogram of salaries given to H1B workers in the software industry
I'd be interested to see how this compares to the E-3 visa, which is specific to workers from Australia. There were 33,000 E-3 visas issued in 2012.
pugz··on Stripe: Bitcoin
This is fantastic. However, I couldn't see any mention of a Bitcoin-specific minimum charge. Is it still 50c as per Stripe's existing documentation[1]?

pugz··on Kickstarter switches to Stripe
This isn't true everywhere. In Australia stripe charges 1.75% for Visa/MC and 2.9% for Amex.

pugz··on JSON Web Tokens
I hope it doesn't die! I'm building a service based on it :)
pugz··on Competition vs. Community
I got to the end of that article and thought "boy, I've really benefitted from the work Jay has done. I should send him some lunch money as a thank you" and there was the link right at the top of the page!

I sent you $20 for all the work you've done to teach me more about the inner workings of iOS, even if I have never installed Cydia. :)

pugz··on The SSL Co-operative: A Member-Controlled Certification Authority
That sounds very much like the service that is already offered by StartSSL.com. You pay for identity validation, but you can then create as many regular and wildcard certificates as you wish. It's a superb service.
pugz··on That one pixel
Fitts' law[1] is relevant here; if that pixel was clickable, it would be _considerably_ easier to click on the button.
