pstinnett··on Fitbit for Dogs
Be sure to implement an owner shaming feature: "Your dog has been more active than you today!"

But in all seriousness this looks great. My wife and I both use Fitbit and have joked about attaching it to our dog's collar to see how active he is.

pstinnett··on Drupal.org compromised
Also not able to login. I ran the forgot password functionality but their FAQ says it could take up to 15 min. to receive the email.
pstinnett··on Show HN: Trailer Swift
Neat - I built something similar that uses the Songkick API and LeafletJS. Not quite as polished as yours though!

pstinnett··on Dashing - A dashboard framework
For anyone interested in only the grid/rearranging js behind this: http://gridster.net/
pstinnett··on Show HN: goodbre.ws, a fully open source recommendation engine for beer
Cheers! I've been wanting to make a beer app for a while and always had BreweryDB in the back of my head. Maybe you should open up your database via an API too:)
pstinnett··on Show HN: goodbre.ws, a fully open source recommendation engine for beer
Not sure if you're managing your own DB or not but it might be worth looking into http://www.brewerydb.com/
pstinnett··on Warren Buffett on newspapers [pdf]
To give a little more context - this letter was sent after an announcement that Berkshire Hathaway was purchasing all of the newspapers owned by Media General.

pstinnett··on Morris.js: Pretty time-series line graphs
I just used RGraph for some charts in an application I'm working on. The biggest pain for me has been plotting time-based data and I wish I had seen this first.

Does the graph handle hours/minutes/seconds or no?

pstinnett··on Facebook and Heroku
This seems great. I know Facebook is switching (or has switched) to requiring 3rd party apps to use an SSL certificate. Since many of the Facebook apps I've been developing don't really require much (many times they're just informational pages, no user input) it seems like a waste to buy a full domain and SSL cert. Being able to just use Heroku's domain and piggyback SSL could be a big win there.
pstinnett··on Ask HN: What's the configuration of your development machine?
- 15" MacBook Pro (2010 Core i5) with 8GB RAM. Swapped out the stock HD for a 120GB SSD and used OWC DataDoubler to put in a 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive for media/scratch.

- 27" Apple Cinema Display.

- OS X Lion

pstinnett··on The benefits of working underground in Durham, NC
American Underground is very nice. I was there for the first time a week or so ago for the Triangle Cocoaheads meet up and was very impressed with the space!
pstinnett··on Ask HN: Is an SSD worth an upgrade for the 2011 MBPs?
Putting in a vote for "yes". I use a 2010 Core i5 15" MBP. I upgraded the internal drives by replacing the optical drive with a 120GB SSD and the internal drive with a 1TB Western Digital. The SSD acts as my boot drive and runs my OS and holds the "working files" that I'm using, along with any apps I run. The 1TB drive holds media (video, music, photos) and archived projects. Works great and it's a huge speed boost. Way more noticeable for me than switching from 4GB to 8GB RAM.
pstinnett··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you watch regularly?
The Pipeline is another good 5by5.tv show. It's just interviews made by Dan Benjamin, different people each episode, but it's usually great!
pstinnett··on HTML5 MP3 Player - Plays local files and parses ID3 tags
Took a while to start loading but it eventually loaded my songs.
pstinnett··on Code Standards & Front-end Development Best Practices
Agreed. Maintaining consistency is key.
pstinnett··on Ask HN: Favorite Ruby and Ruby on Rails resources
One of my favorite Rails resources has been http://everydayrails.com/

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but it has some great articles.

pstinnett··on Profit, Lies, Theft, and Idiocy - designers and developers selling out
This is a really interesting post but I think there's a fundamental flaw in the argument that the "investors" own the product that Chimero is making. Specifically, Rutledge says:

By selling out first before he created the product he promises, he’s now working for the investors instead of working for himself.

It's specifically stated in the Kickstarter FAQ's that investments are not allowed. No one should be under the impression that they own a portion of the product being produced. Instead, you're receiving a copy of the final product in return for your commitment.

pstinnett··on Power user replacements for OS X default apps
Thanks for posting that. Never knew!
pstinnett··on RTP Hackers and Founders meetup is tonight
Very cool. Can't make it tonight but I'll follow along for future events.
pstinnett··on Your Shit, My Stuff, Goldilocks, and Making the Bed You Sleep In
This quote really struck me:

“Add things until it starts sucking, take away things until it stops getting better.”

pstinnett··on Ask HN: What tool, process or habits have boosted your productivity most?
At the beginning of the year I uninstalled the Twitter desktop client and my gmail notifier. Without those 2 items lighting up my menu bar, I find myself way less distracted throughout the day. This keeps me from breaking my programming concentration and I end up spending more time on work.
pstinnett··on Corona game from 14-year-old reaches no 1, passes Angry Birds
I'm curious about the same thing. I've done some research and generally I'm more impressed with Corona games than most of the other framework style games, but I'd definitely like to hear another HNers feedback.
pstinnett··on PHP Fog Raises $1.8 Million To Be The Heroku Of PHP
Why is Shopify listed under the apps? I always thought Shopify was a hosted rails app.
pstinnett··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
There are a lot of apps that I'm surprised to not see in the store on launch day. Versions, Kaleidoscope, Skitch. I'd like to see a way for open source apps to show up here too, because I think managing my applications from the Mac App store will be nice.
pstinnett··on Show HN: Our app - FourSquare for Beer
I was JUST thinking about how there should be something like this last night after picking up a six pack. Big picture ideas I thought of (without really thinking through everything:

- Would be cool to track check-ins on beer via photos of labels. Recognize label to check in. As someone else said below maybe a barcode would be better.

- Partner with bars to give out coasters that include QR codes which match up to the beer served to handle draft beers.

- Start offering notifications for recommended beers in your area. If Beerby notices that a user really likes Dogfishhead IPAs, maybe they get a push notice when x bar has 90 minute on tap.

pstinnett··on Ask HN: What is your workflow for saving bookmarks?
1. Anything I plan to read later goes into Instapaper using the Instapaper bookmarklet.

2. Anything that I want to watch or return to later gets thrown into a "Read" or "Watch" bookmark folder I have which I clear out occasionally. For example, I have a few Ruby and Git guides that I refer to. Even if I have it bookmarked here I'll sometimes just Google for the link.

pstinnett··on The DC Startup Community
Very cool - I was about to post that I wish this directory existed when I was living in DC. Glad to have something similar now that I'm living in Raleigh!
pstinnett··on Listening Room - online group music listening
Saw some tweets about this and thought it was interesting. Example room where some others are posting tracks: http://listeningroom.fettig.net/room/therad/
pstinnett··on Ask HN: How did everyone do with Launch an App Month?
Congrats Joel - looks like it's come a long way since I first took a look when you guys told me about it last year.
pstinnett··on Ask HN: How did everyone do with Launch an App Month?
I use Versions and Kaleidoscope all day. They are integral apps to my workflow. Functionally, I think they're awesome. I have two quick questions regarding the UI though:

1. In Versions, the active Timeline/Browse/Transcript button is the one that doesn't look pressed. Why didn't you go with the opposite? http://yfrog.com/fyh6rp

2. What's up with that navy background on the initial Versions screen?

Not big issues, just curious! Keep up the good work.
