psds2··on Gremlin Brings Chaos Engineering as a Service to Kubernetes
Perhaps languanges should identify themselves with a suffix, like golang.
psds2··on File systems unfit as distributed storage back ends: lessons from Ceph evolution
Zone interface is specifically good at log structured CoW is what it says. Later they talk about how they tried using a write ahead log but that it does not work well for managing metadata in a distributed filesystem.
psds2··on How to Build an Income Sharing Agreement Product
I believe the idea behind "income sharing" is that there is no demand for payment when there is not sufficient income. This makes it hard to qualify for bankruptcy, which is based on your ability to meet monthly debt obligations.
psds2··on Zuckerberg doubles down on Facebook political ads policy after Twitter ban
Someone just needs to start a dark money PAC promoting the NAMBLA agenda, surely they have a candidate in a race somewhere. Fill Facebook with these ads.
psds2··on The largest acquisitions by Big Tech companies
No mention of Dell spending $67bn to acquire EMC and with it VMware.
psds2··on Google patents application: Batch normalization layers
Correct. At my Fortune 100 tech companies engineers are told to not look up patents, and asked to generate two patents a year at my level just to keep the war chest full.
psds2··on Ask HN: Good tech talks on how analytics systems are implemented?
If you mess up the database you can just reread the log files. It also helps manage backpressure during activity spikes where your db can't keep up.
psds2··on You Can't Trust Network Time
Most layer 3 switches provide DHCP, and since almost all consumer routers also provide DHCP, probably most routers do provide DHCP.
psds2··on Employee Wellness Programs Yield Little Benefit, Study Shows
I think a lot of factors come in to play, and this finding does not surprise me for an employer such as BJs wholesale. Compare that workforce vs IBM, where employees remain with the company longer and have much more sedimentary jobs, and wellness programs are probably providing better ROI.
psds2··on Time protection: the missing OS abstraction
These exploits work on a hardware level, and do not require the malicious app to know what else is running. For example, a VM does not know what other VMs are running on the same host in AWS, but Spectre/Meltdown still affected AWS hosts. They are reading data other apps have written to memory.
psds2··on California startup lets you finance your rent with high-interest loans
Isn't this how 2008 happened? Needing to have cash for a security deposit or down payment is a gate designed to reduce risk. Allowing people to take out these loans introduces risks for the landlords. If this catches on landlords are going to start having to do multiple credit checks, once when you apply and another on the day you sign or very close to it, just like they do for mortgages.
psds2··on Train TensorFlow models faster and at lower cost on Cloud TPU Pods
Agreed. TPU will come on premise when Google launches a similar offering to AWS Outposts and ships you an appliance.
psds2··on Fortran is still a thing
Do you think an engineer just sits down, draws your bridge up after some math and then builds it? It takes a team of civil engineers multiple iterations with tests, setbacks, feedback loops etc to get to the final design.

Software can also come with the same type of warranty you imply here. I'm reminded of this image https://media.boingboing.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/sd72...

psds2··on Amazon Camper Force
"near minimum wage" just became $15/hr. Sounds like a solid deal.
psds2··on A comparative analysis of SQL-on-Hadoop systems for interactive analytics
It sounds like maybe they should be using sqoop to import directly in to HDFS. It also sounds like they may not be exploiting parallelism properly. Depending on the queries sometimes its easier to create multiple tables in hbase from the SQL import and have your hbase schemas correlate to the analytics queries that are most common.
psds2··on Partnerships with people on the spectrum yield rich research insights (2017)
"He says Dawson can be a harsh critic, but she often spots logical errors that he and his colleagues have overlooked."

On the spectrum, and this is totally me. I tell my coworkers "I am not saying you are wrong or right, just that your logic doesn't sense."

psds2··on US Software Patents are back with HR 6264 section 7
"Although not explicitly stated, it will also allow for the patentability of medical diagnostics and innovative pharmaceuticals"

How do you patent diagnostics? I can understand diagnostic equipment but this makes it sound like you can patent the process used to find the problem. I don't want to hear my doctor say "I think you have the X, but you can only be sure if you go to the Koch Clinic, they have the patent on diagnosing this."

psds2··on Intel Custom Foundry’s 10nm meltdown is crushing a $20+B market cap tech giant
Doesn't Softbank own ARM now? I don't see ARM having any market cap of its own to qualify the statement "$20bn market cap company"
psds2··on Intel Custom Foundry’s 10nm meltdown is crushing a $20+B market cap tech giant
Tapeout refers to when the photomask is done, basically when you have completed the design, rendered it graphically and are ready to send to fabrication.

tldr this article is basically saying the 10nm is so screwed up they can't just adjust a few things, they need to fix a lot and the more changes you start having to make the more verification that needs to be done before things are signed off and ready for tapeout.
