prvc··on Gemma 3 QAT Models: Bringing AI to Consumer GPUs
> ~15GB (MLX) leaving plenty of memory for running other apps.

Is that small enough to run well (without thrashing) on a system with only 16GiB RAM?

prvc··on Microsoft researchers developed a hyper-efficient AI model that can run on CPUs
There are about 1.58 (i.e. log_2(3)) bits per digit, so they just applied the constant function that maps the reals to 1 to it.

Is making yet another twitter clone really the way to build a path towards super-intelligence? A worthy use of the organization's talent?
prvc··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
Do they stand a good chance of clawing back any of that funding by suing the government (which they seem to be hinting at doing)?
prvc··on How to win an argument with a toddler
Before asking "How to win an argument with a toddler?", first ask:

1- "Might the toddler be right?"
2- "Am I the toddler in this interaction?"
prvc··on Canadian math prodigy allegedly stole $65M in crypto
The entire space of smart contracts falls within the intended functionality of the systems that implement them, which make this particular use of them conceptually unlike things like buffer overflows.

Calling it a "hack" or an "attack" as this article does (while strawmanning the opposite case) is a deliberate attempt to muddy the waters, and is a failure of journalism.

prvc··on iFixit: MacBook Air M4 – A Repair Win or a Locked-Down Mess? [video]
The parts most expected to fail are easy to remove, and they even have separate modules for each port. Also, is the TouchID button not paired to the motherboard (so why would one want it to be easier to access than the motherboard in a repair scenario)? The only valid criticism he had was their choice not to use a removable flash module like in their other recent models.
prvc··on TL;DW: Too Long; Didn't Watch Distill YouTube Videos to the Relevant Information
Getting a "Too long video" message in response to a query is frustrating to the user, and, well, redundant information, so contrary to the purpose of increasing information density.
prvc··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
>Only congress the authority to control spending

You changed your wording to fit your argument. "To spend" became "to control spending", implicitly acknowledging that the two phrases have different meanings.

prvc··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
>the power to spend tax money

But they're not spending; they're kind of doing the opposite of spending. And reducing waste is a previously known (for a long time) goal of theirs.

prvc··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE

prvc··on Andrew Tate's online university hacked – Chat logs, data on 800k users leaked
There appears to be no purpose to this article other than to publicize and to attempt to launder the dox. I wonder to what extent this exposes "The Daily Dot" to criminal liability.
prvc··on Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X
Is it possible that "two-tier policing" exists, while "two-tier policing" does not? In a word, no. I know this a priori.
prvc··on Interview with gwern
The "ums", "rights", "likes", "kindas", and up-talk were completely unnecessary, though, and their presence just detracts from the product.

prvc··on Using an 8K TV as a Monitor
>I don’t usually watch movies on this, but when I do, I set it to 4K 120 Hz mode. The 120 Hz is nice as it is divisible by both 24 fps and 30 fps, which are common framerates for movies, although The Hobbit running at 48 Hz would benefit from Variable Refresh Rate (which does work).

This is naive speculation lacking empirical support. Most movies are released at 23.976 fps, which would necessitate at least one double frame being presented per minute at refresh rates which are multiples of 24 fps. Also there is no 48 fps version of The Hobbit currently available on home media.

Someone still had to pay for them in your case.
prvc··on The Cheating Device (ChatGPT on a TI-84) [video]
Slightly tangential, but it is outrageous that high school math classes require their students to buy these expensive calculators. The educational benefit that they supposedly provide eludes me.

prvc··on MakeMusic ends development and availability of Finale; partners with Steinberg
Previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41363231

Article contains a short history of Finale, and some added information compared to yesterday. MakeMusic will remain in business, but still intends to shut down its DRM activation service for Finale after one year, presumably as a result of their agreement with Steinberg.

Edit: New update to the article now has the following statement from MakeMusic: “We’ve heard your concerns. They are valid. We originally announced that it would no longer be possible to reauthorize Finale after August 26th, 2025. But as a result of our community’s feedback, Finale authorization will remain available for the foreseeable future: Please note that future OS changes can still impact your ability to use Finale on new devices.”

prvc··on The End of Finale
It is unreasonable for the software vendor to impose the task of converting a large mass of files (one by one!) on the users, especially within such a limited time frame. Most users have hundreds, thousands, or more such files to go through. As things stand, a very large amount of music is certain to become lost. A freeware convertor would obviate this particular concern. Very easy to implement, too; just don't disable the export and print functionality anymore in the main application after the "evaluation period" expires.
prvc··on The End of Finale
And after that period, in one year and one day, any new installation of Finale will be impossible to activate without a keygen (and I am not aware of any having been released, so far, that work with the "final" version). This will make it impossible to recover the contents of .mus and .musx files by users who do not already have a previous working installation of Finale.
prvc··on The End of Finale
The tool would need to output MusicXML. And maybe PDF as a fallback, if they can manage that. Each version of Finale uses its own complex, proprietary, and opaque file format. With no way to activate new installations of the software, the content of these files will become harder to access as time progresses. They should do more to allow the software to continue to be activated, as well.
prvc··on The End of Finale
They should, at minimum, release a freeware file conversion tool.
