proaralyst··on The US military is getting serious about nuclear thermal propulsion
Nuclear pulse propulsion (Project Orion) is a different concept to nuclear thermal. Pulse works by using bombs to generate your energetic reaction mass in bursts, whereas thermal uses a more normal fission reactor to superheat some reaction mass that then passes through an ordinary rocket nozzle.

You're right that both are worrying until they're out of atmosphere.

proaralyst··on Unix System Programming with Standard ML (2001) [pdf]
OCaml has first-class modules & functors (functions on modules). I can write something like:

  let f (type t) some_arg (module M : Stringable with type t = t) = M.to_string some_arg
This will have the type signature

  val f : 'a -> (module Stringable with type t = 'a) -> string
In this case the module type Stringable looks like:

  module type Stringable = sig
    type t
    val to_string : t -> string
Functors are just module types so can be used in the same way. Module types fit in as normal values, you don't have to pattern match on them. This works:

  let id x = x

  id (module Int)
proaralyst··on Five Years of Btrfs
The trick was to insert a USB drive, tell BTRFS it's block storage and delete away. Once you're done you tell it not to use the disk and you're good.

This is why I'm back on ext4 now, too.

proaralyst··on New Material Breaks World Record Turning Heat into Electricity
RTGs[0] use the thermoelectric effect to generate electricity from the decay heat of radioactive isotopes. This new material would allow better power generation using RTGs.

As I just learned: Android limits password lengths to 16 characters, so you can't use passphrases.
proaralyst··on Ocean plastic waste probably comes from ships, report says
I've heard this argument before, and please forgive me if this is insensitive. Are people with disabilities eased by non-paper straws not able to supply their own? Perhaps steel ones that can be reused many times? I appreciate that allowances for disabilities must be made, but I can also understand that general popular use of plastic straws is harmful to the environment.
proaralyst··on Ocean plastic waste probably comes from ships, report says
Why are paper straws the wrong solution? Even if they take a little more energy to produce they at least don't leave long-term waste behind.

proaralyst··on Growing up in post-communist Romania – thoughts on learning English
Fugly isn't 4chan English, it's just slang. I grew up hearing people use it in real life.

I'd be unsurprised to hear it in TV programming aimed at teenagers, so perhaps he learned it from that

proaralyst··on Square’s terms of service forbid use of AGPL-licensed software in online stores
Because for some people, open source is not about freedom of use of the software, but freedom of source. They feel that existing FOSS licences can't protect against modification without release in the case of cloud usage, so they use this licence to protect the openness of modification.
proaralyst··on Firefox Monitor
Because the Mozilla brand is more trusted than a random website with ‘Pwned’ in its name. Also, it's being built into Firefox so having a website for it too seems like a good idea.
proaralyst··on Abuses show Assange case was never about law
I'd generally prefer discussion on Hacker News was kept civil. If the parent had a reputable source for their assertion, I'd be interesting to see it. A lack of a source is also interesting.

Either way, asking for a source is better than just saying 'I don't believe you'.
