prism56··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
Not going to happen, but also not every company will "win" so all of this revenue doesn't need to be recouped, just the revenue of the market leader/leaders.
prism56··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
That first poster example is exactly how every poster at my kids school looks. If theres ever any carton people they have extra fingers or are reading books backwards.
prism56··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
I did a GDPR request to KIA and I was amazed what they collected.

Here's some examples: How long I let the car warm up before driving, G force around every GPS corner, acceleration rates, max speeds, every GPS datapoint etc.

prism56··on Ask HN: What default model do you use and why?
I don't deploy anything, I don't make money.

V4 flash latest has been great for me. It's so cheap it's almost free.

prism56··on Will There Be a 7G?
Can't answer this question as I know basically nothing.

I'd be perfectly happy with less headline speed increases and just a real world busy tower speed improvement. That or efficiency gains.

prism56··on Kagi Translate Is Back
I'm more bewildered that they've limited our service as paying customers, restricting Kagi Translate. They have, however, not given any information on what our "free" limit will be.

I feel like it'll be quite restrictive. I use Translate maybe once every two to three months, but for those one or two days or a week I use it a lot. I'm not signing up for the translate service simultaneously just for that.

prism56··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
My xcancel RSS still works fine too!
prism56··on GrapheneOS project: pixel 11 no longer supports hardware memory tagging (MTE)
One thing about Motorola. They aren't known for supporting devices long term with fast updates.

Is there any guarantee that in 4 years this device will be getting monthly patches, source and builds regularly?

prism56··on GrapheneOS project: pixel 11 no longer supports hardware memory tagging (MTE)
Weird omission then... Seems asinine...
prism56··on GrapheneOS project: pixel 11 no longer supports hardware memory tagging (MTE)
Such a shame. Google themselves barely utilised it in their stock builds. I wonder if there is some silicon or development overhead they decided to cut.

I'm optimistic about the Motorola partnership and when my 9 Pro is EOL I'll definitely look at how that's played out.

prism56··on “It works better in the app”
If you use brave or Firefox and ublock origin. You can just block the elements. I do this on so many sites now.

While ads are blocked I still remove tonnes of needless elements on websites I frequent. Hide little banners or app reminders.

prism56··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
Good! Was there ever a compelling reason why they went for this switch initially?
prism56··on Fastmail offers EU data region
I just try hard to pick e2e or encrypted at rest then I guess it doesn't matter to some extent if there's a breach or where it's hosted... I hope
prism56··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
Need a few more providers that wont violate ZDR and i'll switch over.
prism56··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
But why should I care? If my metrics are speed and cost? How many tokens it takes as a user is arbitrary to some extent.
prism56··on Donate to GrapheneOS
I donate £10 a month to a rotating set of causes and Graphene OS is one. However they did recently say they have plenty of funding and need to start spending it. Ive tried and tried but I can't find the x post now
prism56··on Why does kinetic energy increase quadratically, not linearly, with speed? (2011)
That made it trigger for me intuitively. Thanks
prism56··on Updated Xbox Console Prices
Hate how nowhere on that page does it say what the price will be. I guess they don't want the full price in the announcement...
prism56··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
Futo with the new swipe model is the first android keyboard i've used that I don't feel like i'm compromising vs GBoard.

Integrated speak to text, good autocorrect typing, good autocorrect swiping.

prism56··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
I've used both extensively and it's a fair bit better, but was significantly worse preupdate
prism56··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
I settled on the middle model.
prism56··on Steam Machine
Yeah i've used moonlight/sunshine a handful of times and it's absolutely perfect, I couldn't even tell in most cases it was streamed.
prism56··on 16-year-old SATA II SSD survives 1 petabyte of writes, 25x the drive's rating
284TBW which is maybe double the spec. It's an 850 evo.
prism56··on 16-year-old SATA II SSD survives 1 petabyte of writes, 25x the drive's rating
I have an old sata SSD that's been my write cache and transcoding drive for 8 years. Will check the tbw
prism56··on Google to pay SpaceX $920M a month for compute capacity at xAI data centers
Not surprised. I work in the gas turbine market and this AI boom has revolutionised our business and investments, oil and gas is dead. (to us)
prism56··on Gemma 4 QAT models: Optimizing compression for mobile and laptop efficiency
How do you know it swaps to ram vs on the TPU?

Would be interested in testing this on my pixel.

prism56··on Show HN: Uruky (EU-based Kagi alternative) now has Image Search and URL Rewrites
I've just cancelled Kagi. While it was great. I'm trying to stop supporting US companies unless they provide good value
prism56··on The newest Instagram “exploit” is the goofiest I've seen
Delete the accounts and move on... They don't deserve your time and business.
prism56··on Cars collect a startling amount of data about you
Yeah agreed, the data itself I don't have an issue with at all and this kind of info is stored on the vehicle. 1) We should have easy access to it. 2) Why is it instantly uploaded to some cloud, what I haven't done is tried to review how the data is used.
prism56··on Cars collect a startling amount of data about you
I have a Kia that's networked (since disabled). I did a GDPR data request and after a couple of weeks they sent me numerous CSV files and I was a little amused at some of the data fields.

Here's some examples I thought aren't for my benefit.

- How long I let the car warmup before driving after every start, - max speed, - acceleration rates, - Lateral acceleration around corners tagged with GPS data, - every GPS datapoint, - destinations and exactly when I set off and arrived
