pricechild··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
They manage here in the UK.

When entering, "any allergens or intolerances" is normally asked before you're sat down. They distinguish the two to decide whether a station clean is required or if they can just point you to the menu.

If it's not already clear on the menu, most medium/large chains then hand you a tablet letting you filter by almost anything.

I'm still struggling to move past the magic trick of guessing what characters come next to ascribe understanding of "how" and implying understanding?

pricechild··on ICE, CBP Knew Facial Recognition App Couldn't Do What DHS Says It Could
I don't think that's anywhere close to an accurate description of the UK's recent post office scandal?

I haven't seen AI feature in any reporting. Rather, the software had bugs, some people decided the software couldn't be wrong and convinced others to the point of conviction?

pricechild··on Europeans' health data sold to US firm run by ex-Israeli spies
Could the same not be said about the US?

I suspect it'd have a different spin put on it.

pricechild··on Our Plans for Open Source Puppet in 2025
I was surprised not to find a discussion on this ~6 day old blog post already.

Looks like the only change is that the Puppet project's binary distribution will impose 25 node limits without licensing. The source remains Apache 2.0.

I'm assuming someone will distribute binaries without that 25 node limit without issue shortly...

pricechild··on Show HN: A journaling service that runs over WhatsApp
WhatsApp lets you link multiple devices now - I have the same account on an android and spare iPhone.

The main restrictions are that you have to use the main device every 14 days and can only have ~4 linked devices.

pricechild··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
I get the idea... but what happens when a pitot tube is blocked or an aoa sensor gets stuck or ... ?

With "traditional" controls and an autopilot failure, you still have control over all the control surfaces.

With your solution, you don't have enough hand axis to fall back to manual flying? How can the computer possibly guarantee safe flight in all conditions?

In the case of an e.g. air speed sensor failure, how do you get on the ground safely? Is the answer "Just BRS"? Or multiple sensors etc. ?

pricechild··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
Howdy! FI(H) here. Looks very cool, I watched the video too.

Many students get the hang of hovering within 10 hours - "learning to fly" really isn't that hard? I see the rest of the course as "learning to become a pilot." That means the background knowledge and practice to allow decision making & dealing with emergencies etc.

I think if you could improve just a single one of the problems you touch on (difficult controls, navigation, mass and balance, fly by wire etc) you could make a lot of money...

... But improving all of them in one shot... that sounds unreasonable to me? Are they really connected?

> Our system makes it impossible to lose control of the airplane, potentially solving 80% of today’s fatal accidents in general aviation.

I'd love to see details on how you achieved this... or at least your definition of "impossible"...

pricechild··on Don’t let your domain name become a sitting duck
Ironic as last I checked (admittedly 2016) .uk domain transfers saw no verification: https://pricey.uk/blog/uk-domain-transfers-are-scary/

> I registered a new domain at one registrar and immediately asked they change the IPS tag to another. A coworker [saw] ... the tag change, but then I got distracted looking for cake/looking over their shoulder. They set up a new account at the second registrar and claimed the domain, using no secret information and without either registrar or Nominet gaining my consent.

To be clear, the IPS was (is?) publicly visible. So you could poll a list of domains looking for it.

It's worth noting that even if you registered .co.uk with e.g. Gandi, you still get a separate Nominet account with it's own authentication. It doesn't matter if you add 2FA etc - after such a transfer, the domain was registered to a different nominet account.

pricechild··on When eyesight fades and climbing provides comfort
I saw the film "Soundscape" at the Banff mountain film festival and thought it was great. Looks like it's won awards and been shown at a lot of festivals. Definitely recommend it!

The description:

> Soundscape shares the sightless experience of climbing a mountain via echo location, touch and imagination. It features Erik Weihenmayer, a fully blind adventure athlete and author, as he ascends a massive rock face deep in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Using expert camera work and emotive, novel animation to bring to life a concept by adaptive climbing pioneer Timmy O’Neill, the film is a surprising and soulful adventure.

pricechild··on Car dealerships revert to pens and paper after cyberattacks on software provider
What does Tesla do differently regarding changing product prices that they're worth calling out compared to other companies?

My personal experience is that they honoured my order and delivered a vehicle superior in every metric but "turning radius". (Which has a far higher price if ordered again on my delivery day)

Every company in every industry modifies products and pricing? See e.g. "shrinkflation"

pricechild··on Start presentations on the second slide
I don't think it is. It's a commonly taught technique to flight instructors and I personally think it does often work.

Not saying it applies in all situations.

I think it does depend on narrowly scoping the presentation.

pricechild··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
You still need to reduce your horizontal velocity. (For "geo-stationary", think "really high and really, really fast")

Either you do that with atmospheric drag, or a huge amount of fuel. The weight of heat protection is much lower and more efficient than the fuel option.

pricechild··on The Making of Side 7: Gundam Evolution private server project
> We’re not talking about ideas, we’re talking about creative works.

I'm not sure I understand a distinction between "ideas" and "creative works"?

pricechild··on The Making of Side 7: Gundam Evolution private server project
> It essentially means if you create something, it’s not yours unless you are actively selling it?

What is inherently wrong with this?

Why should someone own an idea, just because they had the idea first? I think most people would agree with paying people for their work, and the benefits to society of providing some protections.

But this whole discussion is around where to draw that line and you seem to be starting from "ultimate control by originator" wheras others would perhaps start at "ultimate gift to society"?

pricechild··on Show HN: Built a self hosted clean status page and batteries
And I'd disagree that "batteries included" is a phrase used to describe "features"?

I would interpret "batteries included" to mean "you don't need to worry about shaving a yak to get this installed, it's all there and ready". Language is fun!

Have you tried https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/memories - it solves all of my issues with photo management in nextcloud. (Together with the recognise app) I don't see why they haven't replaced the default photos app with this already...

I think improving the photos experience would have the biggest impact on home users, but nextcloud certainly seems to be chasing the enterprise/gov market in the EU? I'm not complaining!
