prettychill··on Salesforce Global Outage
I think around 2012 there was not a lot of options for an enterprise rally around. Aura was designed and built in the same timeframe as react/angular/ember/etc iirc.
prettychill··on Salesforce Global Outage
aura was open source for a long time. https://github.com/forcedotcom/aura
prettychill··on US transportation bill would add a $130 annual fee for EV drivers
cheap tires wear faster than expensive ones in the same category tire. should people who can’t afford slow wearing tires or repaired/used tires be effectively charged more than someone who can afford top of the line?

additionally, most people have probably paid to replace tires worn due to imbalance or other issues. how would that be accounted for?

prettychill··on US transportation bill would add a $130 annual fee for EV drivers
tires all wear in different ways and for different reasons.
prettychill··on What happened to the US machine tool industry?
I found this blog post to be quite interesting https://www.lynalden.com/fraying-petrodollar-system/
prettychill··on Air traffic controllers pushed to the brink
I wanted to go into ATC training but am too old at 32. Was pretty disappointed by that.
prettychill··on Apple to Revamp TV App in Step Toward Simplifying Video Services
I would love to see separation of sports from other content in this revamp. As someone who doesn't even like/watch soccer, it would be great if 3/4 of the feed wasn't just MLS spam. I am never going to subscribe to that so why is my experience being made infinitely worse :(
prettychill··on FTX – The fraud was in the code
It is most certainly fraud to lie about protections in place to protect customer assets. That includes backstop insurance and auto-liquidation practices.
prettychill··on FTX – The fraud was in the code
If you actually look at the article the very first code sample shows how certain customers (Alameda) are directly exempt from auto liquidation & can carry negative balances at FTX.
prettychill··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
this is pretty common from what I have seen. especially with books.
prettychill··on Apple finally put USB-C in new iPhone, but limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds
nobody is calling an iphone a budget phone. adding tax and optional accessories to call this a $1k phone is disingenuous
prettychill··on Apple finally put USB-C in new iPhone, but limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds
the iphone 15 starts at 799.
prettychill··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
doubtful. I don't think many people care at all, I know I don't
prettychill··on Ask HN: Why do functional programmers hate loops (for, while, etc.)?
do people really think this is clearer than looping.. my mind immediately goes to a loop here
prettychill··on Advertise on DuckDuckGo Search
what button? I must be blind...

This would be very useful because "x reddit" is probably my most common search

prettychill··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
I use carplay in my CX5 and have no issues (my cx5 does not have a touch screen at all, 2022)
prettychill··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
if you are driving defensively? you may think there is potential for brake usage in the upcoming section of highway, so you might take your foot off the accelerator and hover the brake just in case. I believe this is pretty common.

at least when I drove a model s this wasn't really possible because the car would slow rapidly when I took my foot off the accelerator. nice to know that can be disabled, ill look for it next time I'm driving a tesla

prettychill··on Spotify's redesign isn't going down well
Every year Spotify gets worse, and I say this as a 10yr premium subscriber
prettychill··on Tableau has been killed by Salesforce
What took over?
prettychill··on Tech CEOs Should Be Held Accountable, or Even Fired, Amid Layoffs
Agree. I guess it's self preservation - managers decide who is laid off and are more likely to believe it's the ICs who are unproductive, not the many tiers of middle management who do nothing quantifiable.

Quite hilariously engineers are going to be measured by "productive commits" soon, but I saw no guidance created to measure how managers are providing value

prettychill··on Appliance makers sad that 50% of customers won’t connect smart appliances
from the article:

For its part, LG saw an incremental increase in water-filter sales when it tracked water volumes on connected fridges versus non-connected fridges, the company told the Journal.

prettychill··on Tesla’s Price Cuts Are Roiling the Car Market
Aren't they just back to prices 2-3 years ago?

Also, do people really think that cutting profit margins is bullish for Tesla?

prettychill··on Salesforce will lay off 10% of staff as part of restructuring
The post pandemic layoff was nowhere near 10%
prettychill··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
1 story, ~1400sqft, built in 1920s reno in 2017..maybe its just insulated really well
prettychill··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
Hottest month for me was aug, I paid around 161

~$135 1190kWh (charged at ~$0.114 / kWh) ~$10.50 tax

~15.50 other fees/riders which can not be recouped with panels

OP is somehow paying ~25c/kWh, though I have to believe they are counting the connections fees etc in their estimate, based on natl averages they would be an outlier for most states. https://www.eia.gov/electricity/state/

prettychill··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
This is a great point. Avg cost for me last year was less than half, around 11c/kWh

Though, https://www.eia.gov/electricity/state/ makes me wonder how you are getting 25c/kWh prices, as author estimates. Maybe higher price tiers due to usage.

prettychill··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
I live in a much hotter and much more humid area than the author does, and my bills are not even remotely close to these. I do run my AC through the summer, probably more than most
prettychill··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
I am surprised at these power bills, at least in my area the implied "savings" are 2-3 times what my bill is on any given month. Huge house maybe?
prettychill··on Bret Taylor out as co-CEO of Salesforce
Will be interesting to see what Bret works on next, he seems to have done largely a good job at Salesforce in the past two years

I wonder if the co-ceo model will return again.

prettychill··on Spotify CEO renews attack on Apple after Musk's salvo
Isn't the argument to add sideloading / other stores to ios? How does installing an alternate store to get a cheaper spotify app compare to installing a PWA?
