praneshp··on In memory Key/Value store in go using gRPC
hey can you add why?
praneshp··on Google Discontinues Hangouts on Air
Fastmail. I can vouch for them, having used them since 2014, including after a recent re-design.
praneshp··on Why I Turned Down an AWS Job Offer
That's nice! In the time I've been in the industry, fb has generally been considered a better payer than amazon, I think. Would you agree?

I was just trying to say that the amazon vesting percentage doesn't adversely affect a returning intern's total first/second year comp.

praneshp··on Why I Turned Down an AWS Job Offer
Being an intern is a huge bonus here. My wife got a decent equity grant under the terrible 5/15/../.. plan, but also a 20k cash bonus for each of the first two years for being a returning intern.

This makes it very attractive to quit after two years, imo

praneshp··on Snap’s Secret Weapon Speaks
(the royal) You don't have evidence that the vast majority of user's care about ethics either. If you have numbers, please share, and I'm happy to apologize and reverse my position
praneshp··on Snap’s Secret Weapon Speaks
I think several people here are in tech, but earn non faang salaries. My personal opinion is that many of them are jealous.
praneshp··on Indian Government Repeals Articles 370 and 35A, Bifurcates Kashmir
Not snarky: maybe it doesn't matter if it looks good or not, beyond optics?
praneshp··on Snap’s Secret Weapon Speaks
That's why I said "a lot by people". I'm sure some people have ethical reasons to dislike ads.

This is a good read if you are non-snarky and were really looking for an answer.

praneshp··on Japan's Women Opt Out of Marriage
If you re-read your parent comment, it says "A lot of people in their 20s". That's clearly different from "All of the people in their 20s".
praneshp··on Amazon allegedly scammed out of $370K by 22-year-old's return shipments of dirt
Well, it _was_ brilliant, but the alleged perp got caught. Good luck now.
praneshp··on Misconfigured Jira instances exposed data of hundreds of Fortune 500 companies
Are you allowed to just do it now, or that has to be done in the 2-hour backlog grooming meeting?
praneshp··on Domino’s asks SCOTUS to shut down a lawsuit requiring its website be accessible
Thank you, that's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for.
praneshp··on Domino’s asks SCOTUS to shut down a lawsuit requiring its website be accessible
Trying to be non-snarky here: How does it help someone who doesn't need any of today's typical accessibility features?
praneshp··on Why does unsubscribing from a newsletter take “a few days”?
They might not get the visibility, or you might complain that they are using Medium which you hate, etc.
praneshp··on Tesla co-founder and CTO JB Straubel stepping down
> Ford has had 4 CEOs in the last four years... not a sound from the media.

You must not read a lot of news

praneshp··on Netflix CEO may have missed the real reason why US subscriber numbers plunged
> GoT, Breaking Bad, Westworld

finished show with poorly received last couple of seasons, not a hbo show that's streaming on Netflix right now, 2-season old show with a silly 2nd season.

House of Cards was also kind of crap after 4 seasons (and even earlier if we're going to nitpick)

Breaking bad is now seen with rose tainted glasses, but I remember how some folks talked about it when the show was running (esp the fly episode).

Finally, if you're going to praise HBO, not mentioning The Wire is kind of ignorant.

praneshp··on The Slow Death of Hollywood
I suggest braving through season 5, I personally enjoyed the remaining seasons, especially the last one. They never reach 1-4 levels though.
praneshp··on The Slow Death of Hollywood
Added advantage for me : no one making irritating sounds eating their $8 small popcorn or unwrapping their $5 candy.

> I would love to understand the though process of someone going out of their way to remove someone’s livelihood from them because of a comment on HN

This is not so difficult though. You just need to adjust your starting point to someone who doesn't like boulos' first. That's not so difficult IMO, it's a large org and boulos' seems to be a fairly prolific commenter here.

praneshp··on Ask HN: What do middle-level managers do?
> Analogy breaks down because “horses” are just as smart as the “drivers” (sometimes more and sometimes less)

Sure, but horse is horse and driver is driver. I can give excuses all day for why I'm not the driver.`

praneshp··on Ask HN: Do you use automated tools to create APIs, or do you code them manually?
> Protobuf (Models)

Sounds really cool! Is this something that comes out of the box or generated by your own plugins?

praneshp··on Ask HN: Do you use automated tools to create APIs, or do you code them manually?
Are you writing internal APIs or exposing some to external developers also? Are those external developers able to start from JSON and make a request?
praneshp··on Security expert calls out Costco and other retailers on bag searches
> It's arguable whether this is legal even if you signed a contract

If you ever take Costco to court, I'll follow along curiously.

In a lawsuit-hungry country like the US, I'm not sure how long a large company like Costco can get away with something illegal in their contract.

>> Why not just ask for permissions for a single app specific folder

Dropbox lets apps work on either a single app specific folder, or on your entire dropbox.

But the app has to be one type or the other, the user cannot choose what access they want to give out.

Disclosure: I work at dropbox, previously on the api-platform team.

praneshp··on Timeline of Slack’s Tech Stack Evolution
Next time Stewart Butterfield co-founds a games company, it'll be one to watch out for.

> something the user seems to specialize in,

I think this is why.

praneshp··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
Can you list a few dumb TVs that are also decent from a watching perspective? In 2015 I could just say $300, and most TVs at that price range were non-smart. Today the struggle is much worse.
praneshp··on India Plans to Launch Moon Mission in July

Good thing only a handful of people care about what you see then...

praneshp··on Lyft Takes over Ford GoBike
And in this case, Lyft is simply trying to ascertain that the courts will uphold this contract. No need to hate on them simply for taking the city to court.
