praestigiare··on Localisation is too hard for Gmail
Google in general is terrible at localization. The worst of the current big players.
praestigiare··on The Deafening Silence of the Royal Society Open Science Journal
4 is a strawman. The comment you are replying to did not say 100% details, it said "a methods section that allows a third party to fully recreate your experiment."
praestigiare··on Node Modules at War: Why CommonJS and ES Modules Can’t Get Along
npm install esm

Then everything just works. Top level await and all.

praestigiare··on Why is America stuck with bad headlights?
This process is nearly instant in every country I have used it in except for the US, where it inexplicably takes 20 seconds of waiting both pre and post pin entry.
praestigiare··on Twitter hides Donald Trump tweet for “glorifying violence”
Because, while this is not true of individual republicans, republican party media strategy has been based on positional ethics for a long time. Free speech is good when it is our free speech. Executive orders are bad when they are your executive orders.
praestigiare··on Wikipedia Is Badly Biased
It is not. Because not everything is some kind of mirror reflection across the left/right boundary.
praestigiare··on For cops who kill, special Supreme Court protection
I do formal risk assessments as a part of my job, in a context where people are often risking their lives. Both 1:6 and 1:291 as the chance of of severe injury or death are both firmly in the highest risk category under most calculations, meaning that for decision making, you should assume that it will result in death. Yes, they are two orders of magnitude different. But the comparison is not nonsensical.
praestigiare··on In OS X 10.15, all Excel documents show text upside down and backwards
Excel on the MacOS is pretty bad all around. Filtering a 100 line spreadsheet hangs for 20 seconds.
praestigiare··on Trello handed over my personal account to my previous company
Easy answer: "An email address attached to your account is being set up for SSO. You must update your account:

1. Remove the example.com address from your account. Warning: You will lose access to all boards shared with this email address.

2. Accept the SSO migration. Warning: You will no longer be able to sign in with your Trello email and password.

praestigiare··on Some cities that took on a traffic safety challenge are seeing fatalities go up
I think the cause and effect may be reversed from what you imply here. Having been a cyclist in both Berlin and in Oslo, I was much more aggressive in Berlin, out of necessity. When there is not appropriate infrastructure and traffic does not respect you, it creates a sort of Max Max mentality where you do what you have to do.
praestigiare··on The flawed three-cueing system for teaching reading
This article is discussing the transition from #1 to #2 in your pathway. It cites multiple studies showing that the method being criticized is not effective.
praestigiare··on Is Science Political?
Everything humans do is political. Thinking something is not political is like thinking you don't have an accent: it just means you think of the politics as normal, not that they don't exist.

The practice of science involves choices about where to allocate resources, what lines of research are considered prestigious, what fields of study are encouraged or discouraged, debates over the ethics of technologies that arise from research, who gets to do the science... All of these considerations and more are political.

praestigiare··on Man's $1M Life Savings Stolen as Cell Number Is Hijacked
We have allowed institutions to frame this kind of fraud in the way that they prefer, but nothing was stolen from this man. A million dollars was stolen from the bank.

It is the same with "identity theft." There is no such thing. If someone takes out a loan or credit card in my name, they have taken nothing from me. I am not even involved, and the law should recognize that.

By framing it as theft from consumers, it allows the institutions which are actually responsible to avoid consequences.

praestigiare··on One year in, still no visa
Does this specific person have a right to travel to this specific country? Clearly not. Do people from countries not covered by ESTA face a more difficult authorization process: clearly yes. Does the chain of events indicate something is wrong with the process? Clearly yes. People are allowed to talk about how systems violate expectations, perform poorly, or fail, even if those failures are not violations of human rights, and even if those failures are not the worst kind of failures that happen.
praestigiare··on Getty Images Sued Again for Trying to License Public Domain Images
In the first listed incident, Getty sent a takedown notice over a public domain image. This is fraud, just as clearly as the scammers who call elderly people and tell them they need to pay some fake fee or bill they didn't know about.

People in this thread keep claiming that because it is public domain, they can do whatever they want with it including license it, which is not true. They can certainly sell it, but a license is a legal instrument that grants usage rights, and Getty cannot grant such rights. To claim to do so is fraud.

praestigiare··on Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads”
This comment also illustrates a big problem with Google's automated processes: The people willing to put in the work to comply with them / get around them are more often the spammers. You see it in search too. Who researches and does tests on page ranking and SEO? The spammers.
praestigiare··on Don't shoot, I'm disabled
Telling that, submitted at the same time, this story has one sarcastic comment, thile the story of a police officer selling information on the dark web has an actual discussion.
praestigiare··on Trump to Apple: 'Make your products' in the US to avoid tariffs
Of course, reasonable schedule changes for last minute changes would have also solved this problem.
praestigiare··on James Damore has filed a class action lawsuit against Google
As I said before, my response is not data, I know that. But what you just wrote is exactly how confirmation bias works: If he fit your narrative, he would confirm your narrative. That is why these discussions need to be about data, and not "what everyone sees and no one talks about."
praestigiare··on James Damore has filed a class action lawsuit against Google
You claim that there is a pattern of bad diversity hires, but your anecdotes are just as easily explained by confirmation bias: You see an incompetent male engineer, and you write him off as an idiot and forget him. You see an incompetent woman, and she becomes evidence that there is a problem with diversity programs. You remember evidence that supports your narrative.

Obviously my statement is not evidence either. I only wanted to point it out because this is so often overlooked when it comes to these issues. This is an arena where our cognitive biases are especially pernicious, and any discussion needs to address them.

praestigiare··on What Happened to Google Maps?
When using a map for navigation at a glance, with a route overlaid on the map, I do not need to know the names of the streets, but I do need to see that there are three cross streets before my turn.
