possibleworlds··on Strange Design Decision: An Oven with French Doors
Oven doors are annoying, often requiring you to bend quite low or else drop them depending on placement. As a comment on the linked article mentions many commercial ovens feature this style of door.
possibleworlds··on Accelerando (2005)
Exactly. It's a fantastic book and extremely fun, but in Stross' own words: "In the background of what looks like a Panglossian techno-optimist novel, horrible things are happening."

possibleworlds··on It took my savings and 14 years but I’m about to beat arthritis
As a youngish sufferer of osteoarthritis in my foot I had my hopes up, however there is no mention of cartilage or bone in the article.

The “cure” for osteoarthritis would need to regenerate or replace damaged or missing cartilage, a seemingly impossible task from my limited understanding.

possibleworlds··on Reverse-engineering my speakers' API to get reasonable volume control
Perfectly fine, I actually prefer it in almost every way.

The only issue I agree is truly serious is the latest release draining battery on iOS with or without background activity disabled. That’s a real bad bug to introduce and I’m surprised it hasn’t been fixed yet.

possibleworlds··on Reverse-engineering my speakers' API to get reasonable volume control
Nice speakers! I'm guessing the model, if correct here are some spins for those interested https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/loudspeakers/jbl_4329p/

Weird you can't limit digital output. I also listen mostly at low volumes and have the same issue. Part of the reason I chose Sonos is this is built in across all products, alongside an effective loudness toggle. This has been particularly helpful with some little Genelec 8010s I use as desktop speakers plugged into a Sonos Port.

possibleworlds··on AWDL on Macs can interfere with your WiFi connections
Yeah I was testing out my new home internet service provider and seeing ping from my Macbook to the internet that was all over the place. I got worried and tried from my router - totally normal, so phew.

Later on I remembered this experience and realised something must be up with my wifi. Very long story short, nothing is wrong with my wifi but everything is wrong with my household of Apple devices.

Ping from my router to anything non-Apple on wifi is rock solid. Ping from router to any Apple device (computers, phones, Apple TV) is a mess with periods of stable low latency mixed with random stretches fluctuating between 70 and 250ms.

This is really, really bad isn’t it? Like it would render Apple a complete no go for latency sensitive gaming. It would also explain why despite the fact that I have what I think is a good home network (an ISP with great routing, MikroTik + bridged Eeros, cake running on my WAN link tested with flent rrul), the internet just feels slow sometimes. Pages load slowly one second and not the next, Airplay to my Sonos speakers drops out under specific conditions etc.

Unfortunately I can’t pick channels with Eero so now I am considering changing my access points just to see if it fixes this issue. I feel a bit crazy doing this, but when looking back I’ve rationalised a lot of weird slow internet behaviour to my own error, eg not knowing exactly how to configure cake properly perhaps.

possibleworlds··on OP-1 field
Off topic, but does anyone have stereo OD11s? I’m seriously interested in these as an alternative to spending too much money on a two channel system that beams at a single sweet spot.
possibleworlds··on The long, slow process of carcinogenesis
My two sisters and I all have diagnosed Polycythemia Vera with the JAK2 mutation present. Neither parent have the mutation or the disease. From what I understand PV is not supposed to be hereditary and clusters like ours are very rare. In retrospect the earliest signs (at the time slightly elevated platelets) were present for me when I had a very bad bout of Epstein-Barr in my early 20s and was getting regular blood counts done for months, although the first diagnosis wasn't picked up until my eldest sister was in her early 40s and the disease was non-trivially advanced.
possibleworlds··on Everyone is wrong about the Metaverse
Tech people love to talk about how everyone in the world at all times are living tech lives, forgetting all the people that have a balanced relationship with technology and place value on real world experiences.

I am someone who has had an imbalanced relationship with technology and am becoming happier and healthier limiting my engagement and placing focus on real world relationships, activities and experiences over virtual ones. It will be a veeeeeery long time until VR can simulate the sensory experience of eating a good meal, and even then such an experience would have little benefit over the real thing. Perhaps letting someone who medically has no sense of taste experience a simulacrum of the pleasure is a worth aspiration, but saying the virtual world will become more meaningful than the real one is in my view dystopian at best. I am thoroughly hoping for a tech backlash and focus on real world community and friendships.

possibleworlds··on Facebook Renames to Meta
You’ve just clarified a thought I hadn’t fully formed about NFTs (since I try my hardest not to think about them)… they could define a model whereby creators receive an ongoing cut from transfer of ownership. And this could be applicable in the broader sense you are talking about in your last paragraph, eg many copies (mp3 sales) or licensing (streaming services). Time could become an NFT, giving all the contributors to a film or workers at a company a share of profit. I mean that would be truly revolutionary.
possibleworlds··on FSNotes: Notes manager for macOS and iOS – native, open source
Lot's of discussion about other apps but none cover the main selling point for me. FSNotes was created initially as an open source Notational Velocity / NVAlt replacement when NVAlt broke on one of the MacOS version upgrades. It can be configured to replicate the amazing modal search / create interface from those apps.

There is also NVUltra [0] from Brett Terpstra, his successor to NVAlt. It is still in beta after quite a while. From memory it seemed more powerful and a bit slicker overall, but right now I don't need to do anything too complicated and prefer the cleaner native look of FSNotes.

FSNotes has no dropbox integration for the iOS app, but you can still use dropbox as a store and use any other plain text / markdown iOS note app. I use 1Writer.

> Admittedly it has a weird way of naming the files

You can change the file naming default to be based on note title BTW, it's in the first Preference pane window "General".

possibleworlds··on Beets: the music geek’s media organizer
Agreed. Although I echo another commenter about wanting real tagging functionality in a manager. Also Music app has some ongoing bugs that just seem to never be fixed, the main one for me related to embedded artwork.

For quickly tagging / getting artwork for random stuff like individual songs ripped from YouTube I use Yate’s [0] Discogs Wizard. It’s very configurable and fast to use once you set things up.

Edit: will add that Yate is actively developed and I only remember paying for my license once. I would happily pay for upgrades given its utility over the years.

possibleworlds··on Simple test reveals if your mental images are more vivid than other people's
I was friends (more aquaintances now since I haven't seen him for quite a few years) with an incredibly talented artist / illustrator. I worked with him for a period and would place him more than anyone else I have ever met in the genius spectrum based on a number of factors. One of them is that I know that he can vizualize fully formed images, to the extent that some of his work is just transcribed directly from what he sees in his mind.

I have never been able to do anything close to this, and similarly have self-diagnosed as much weaker in this "power". I mean I can visualize things in my mind but it is fuzzy and fleeting, like focusing on any detail collapses the field of view.

This episode of radiolab about a musician who can maintain a 3d mental image of four orchestras playing at once always stuck with me, and seems relevant to this topic:

possibleworlds··on On Smoking
There is plenty out there [0]. Certain substances are at a baseline and without question addictive for humans, do enough of it and anyone can become an addict regardless of free will. Genetics play a role in susceptibility and level of dependence, as do other factors like underlying mental illness. If you ever see a full blown alcoholic going through withdrawals [1] it becomes clear that physical substance addiction is very much a real thing.

possibleworlds··on On Smoking
You need to read the whole book start to finish, and be open to its subtle reverse brainwashing. Personally the main eye openers were:

• Nicotine is scientifically proven to be incredibly physically addictive. • The way this physical addiction plays out is when you smoke a cigarette the effects wear off within half to 1 hr, and whether you are aware of it or not your brain starts begging for another hit. Side note: this explains how the tobacco industry settled on 20 / 25 cigarettes in a packet, ie 1 cigarette every 30 mins to 1 hr per day. • The stress / anxiety you think smoking is helping with are actually the resultant cravings caused by the last cigarette you smoked. Thus when you smoke you are in a constant state of withdrawal, it is like you are quitting all day every day. • You are not "quitting" or "giving up" anything, you are addict who is deciding to make a change and stop.

There is lots of other stuff in there, I don't think the above spoils it. Cumulatively the book gets you into the headspace of viewing the journey of stopping as a positive healing process, to the extent that you can actually enjoy the withdrawals and cravings. No joke, it is that eye opening and convincing.

possibleworlds··on Technology “Addiction”
“Actual addictions” are caused by actually addictive substances or patterns of behaviour. Genetic predisposition is also a significant and often misunderstood factor. Yes there can be links to underlying mental health issues, but addictions are primarily cause by things that are actually addictive. Nicotine, for example, causes immediate withdrawals and cravings in the short term, and basically rewires your brain chemistry with sustained long term use. Addiction to nicotine is not caused by depression, it is caused by nicotine.
possibleworlds··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Google Photos?
I’ll add a shoutout to the CloudSync app on Synology, which let’s you connect to most of the major cloud storage providers and sync up, down or bidirectionally. I use it back up (sync changes down only) my Dropbox, Google Drive, GCS and B2 folders. It’s especially handy for quick access to the > 1tb assets I have in Dropbox that I don’t have space to sync to my space limited computer HDs. Plus with Recycle Bin enabled on Synology shared folders you get ad hoc restoration of deleted files dating back as long as you want.

Expensive, since they engaged Pentagram for branding.

More seriously, the animations have "ascii-animation" classes in the dom, tui is probably more fitting aesthetic label if you ask me. Not sure if a lib is involved or its custom. Either way it is done very nicely.

possibleworlds··on The Animal Is Tired
Loved Robin Hobb when I was a kid. I read a LOT of fantasy back then and she was up the top of the list next to GRRM for me.

The closest thing to traditional fantasy I have read in a very long time is Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, and now I am bit broken trying to chase a similar hit. If anyone has any recommends to scratch the post BOTNS itch please do share.

possibleworlds··on Zola: A fast static site generator in a single binary
No mention of Eleventy [1] here. Definitely worth a look, my personal view is it nails the balance of simplicity, power and flexibility. I have used it for all sorts of projects, from marketing websites to quick client docs and presentations. For non-trivial usage in a project see google web.dev [2].

possibleworlds··on A Minimal Email Client
I tried this once. I am not disciplined enough with inbox zero for this to be functional. Now I use the opposite, mailmate [1] with a stupid amount of smart mailboxes for different types of filtering.

One of my favourite things in mailmate is the ability to auto generate sub-folders in a smart folder based on rules. When I discovered this feature when trialing the product my first inclination was to create a smart folder replicating my inbox, with a rule creating sub-folders for every unique sender. I marvelled at my genius and purchased the product immediately. To this day this system is my main method to quickly scan and archive old inbox conversations sender by sender.

possibleworlds··on Ubiquiti Networks Breach
Late reply, and the other reply covered it really.

Up until around a year ago I was on adsl2 with a highly symmetrical connection. I work from home mostly as does my partner, with constant syncing to various cloud services plus large uploads and downloads for work.

Maxing out the puny 1Mb of upload would render the entire connection completely unusable. Yes, you can manually limit various apps but it so much easier just to throw an edgerouter x in front of everything running stock smart queue or cake.

I'm on a faster connection now so uploads are not so much an issue, but even still it works a treat for things like gaming / VOIP.
