poser-boy··on Cytopia: Open-source city simulator with pixel-art graphics
That because most cities right now are road/car-based. Maybe once Cytopia is further developed walk-able cities can be designed.

Very much still a prototype compared to SimCity.

OpenTTD has more of a focus on transport and economy. This project focuses more on city building like the SimCity games.
poser-boy··on Shine: A super fast fixed-point MP3 encoder
If your comment was aimed at shine specifically, here is an excerpt from the bottom of the readme:

This code was dug out from the dusty crates of those times before internet and github. It apparently was created by Gabriel Bouvigne sometime around the end of the 20th century.

poser-boy··on AVIF has landed (2020)
Probably isn't the best idea to compare AVIF to JPEG. JPEG is better suited to high fidelity images, while AVIF is ideal for making the image look good as small as it can.

I suggest looking into JPEG XL for things like photography, scans, etc.

poser-boy··on The Ur-Quan Masters
Just started playing for the first time last month using the voiceovers from the 3DO version. Despite being before my time, I found it extremely engaging.

Clearly a classic, and with the open-source engine release, eternal. Download and play now if you haven't already.

poser-boy··on One decade later, Minecraft world generation is interesting again
Thank you for sharing! About 7 minutes in, the developer shares that biome and terrain shaping has been decoupled.

Perhaps I should've re-thought that part. Realism was widely interpreted to be the goal at the time. But the changelog only mentions code simplification.

I'd say if you compare the first two set of screenshots. It is more realistic since you don't get as crazy land formations. But falls short of creating significant mountain ranges to compensate, making it less realistic in a way.

> The article suggests that "more realistic" is correlated with "boring".

I wouldn't say so. With the increased mountain height I'd argue the terrain is more realistic than ever, and not boring.

Veloren is great. I'm pretty sure it's worldgen uses Simplex noise, rather than the Perlin noise like MC does.
poser-boy··on OpenMW: Open-source reimplementation of TES3 Morrowind
I don't think it was very difficult when I tried it. Just grab the textures and main mod, put them somewhere (e.g. .local/share), and then append the following to your openmw.cfg config AFTER the base game:

data="/home/user/.local/share/mw/Tamriel Data (HD)"

data="/home/user/.local/share/mw/Tamriel Rebuilt"

I agree modding OpenMW is painful because of the fracture. Though I must say, out of all the Elder Scrolls games, Morrowind has always been the one I've felt like modding the least. Maybe it's just perfect?
