porjo··on Cessna 188 Pacific Rescue
Here's an explanation of the 'aural boxing' technique used by the planes to find each other:

porjo··on World's 26 richest people own as much as poorest 50%, says Oxfam
Sure, go right ahead - just don't be self righteous about it. Don't become what you hate in that other person.
porjo··on World's 26 richest people own as much as poorest 50%, says Oxfam
It's a great temptation to point the finger at 'those filthy rich people over there' but to someone else you and I are those filthy rich people. Let's all have an attitude of gratitude, and not forget that wealth isn't a zero sum game. Make the most of what you've been given, and leave the world a better place.
porjo··on Google Maps incorrectly estimating Australian outback trip times
The example cited in the article is from Windorah to Birdsville (379km) - Google were estimating 11hrs. This has since been revised to 7hrs 47 however locals claim they do it in about 4hrs.
porjo··on A tilt of the head facilitates social engagement
> The upper-eye bias is much weaker at a 90-degree rotation. "Ninety degrees is too weird," said Davidenko

No kidding! I'm trying to imagine someone talking to me with their head tilted completely to one side.

porjo··on Compiz: Ubuntu Desktop's little known best friend
I guess that rules out any chance of a port to Wayland.
porjo··on YouTube top earners: A seven-year-old making $22M
> There is always one.

No, not even one ;)

Seriously though, it seems that every time I switch on to any news or current affairs show, they're talking about the gender wage gap. So clearly a lot of people are interested in this.

porjo··on YouTube top earners: A seven-year-old making $22M
I was interested to see that the top 10 earners are all male.[1] I wonder if this is merely a reflection of greater male patronage of Youtube generally but the topics that these top earners are focusing on are not all stereotypically male interests. The 7 year old kid reviews toys which seems quite gender neutral and then there's the makeup artist which, presumably, would be of more interest to a female audience. What is stopping women and girls from dominating Youtube?

porjo··on The Hunt for Earth’s Deep Hidden Oceans
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened." - Genesis 7:11
porjo··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
To play devil's advocate - a personal anecdote: in a previous job, a newly hired manager announced she was pregnant and going on maternity leave in 6 months - threw our department into chaos. To me it seemed clear that in her mind, getting the job was a green light for getting pregnant - at the expense of the company! I can't blame companies for being nervous about these kinds of scenarios.
porjo··on Signal down worldwide for 2hrs
No explanation yet as to the cause, other than to say via Twitter: "The outage was not caused by a DDoS or any other type of attack."

porjo··on Show HN: Note Kitchen – Learn piano chords and scales
Great! Some suggestions for improvement: - make the keyboard bigger on screen - put a play button on screen - allow the whole chord to be played at once aswell as arpeggiated - allow chord inversions (left/right key?)
porjo··on Planet Shadertoy
The shadertoy version is missing the mountain terrain scene present in this video.
porjo··on Signal Foundation
Regarding the SGX enclave and contacting sharing, the blog post announcement dated 26 Sept 2017 says 'deploying into production...over the next few months'. Can we assume that's happened already? Or are contacts still being exchanged in a way that would allow a middle man to reconstruct an individual's social graph?
porjo··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
I have nothing to gain by SpaceX failing. I wish them all the best. I'm just stating what I think is pretty obvious - that this was a massive PR exercise, apart from anything else. My BS detector goes into overdrive at times like that.

When you mount cameras on a landing barge, you would expect there to be a high likelihood of them being damaged or affected in some way when your rocket lands. So you do the obvious thing, and setup a redundant camera feed somewhere at a distance. Previous test landings at sea had a chase plane. Where was that this time?

porjo··on Why the world needs OpenStreetMap (2014)
Openstreetmap depends on ordinary users adding/editing what they care about. Why not have a go editing those areas yourself :)
porjo··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
Yes, very hard to believe this was a technical failure/limitation. My money would be on a deliberate cut, possibly even automated, when the systems became aware of impending failure. It'd be important for SpaceX that any negative outcomes are delayed from public release in order to control what makes it into the headline news. The fate of the reusable components would be a particularly sensitive aspect of the PR campaign.
porjo··on A Type of Road Junction that Kills Cyclists
I agree. A roundabout is also a much better than solution presented in the article, whereby traffic would have to turn across oncoming traffic in order to continue on their original track.
porjo··on Reading privileged memory with a side-channel
From the Spectre whitepaper:

> In addition to violating process isolation boundaries using native code, Spectre attacks can also be used to violate browser sandboxing, by mounting them via portable JavaScript code. We wrote a JavaScript program that successfully reads data from the address space of the browser process running it.

The whitepaper doesn't contain example JS code however

porjo··on How Australia's $49B internet network came to be ridiculed
Because of the astronomical cost involved in running fibre to some premises. And not even talking about city vs bush - two city dwellings in close proximity can have vastly different cost of installing fibre.

I would qualify my original statement with 'as part of a NBN-like project'. I didn't intend to suggest that not every home should have fibre, or in deed will have fibre at some point in the future, just not at the tax payer's expense.

porjo··on How Australia's $49B internet network came to be ridiculed
Running FTTH to every home was always a pipe dream (excuse the pun). Some kind of technology mix was a necessary compromise however the balance is wrong - percentage of FTTH is way too low. My home town is literally (and inexplicably!), divided down the middle - one half with FTTH, the other FTTN.
porjo··on Email Storm
Wouldn't a simple mitigation be to limit the number of recipients allowed in the 'to' and 'cc' fields? 'Bcc' can be used for the mega mailouts. That way, a user hitting reply-all sends to a much more limited set of addresses.

porjo··on Redesigning Google News
As a fellow Australian, I used to browse to news.google.com.au and see predominantly Australian news. Now, I get redirected to news.google.com and see no Australian content! (no, I'm not signed into Google)

I really hope that gets fixed.

EDIT: this URL gets me Australian news: https://news.google.com/news/headlines?ned=au&hl=en-AU

porjo··on The great self-esteem con
This is a great way to put it.

> Self-esteem can't come from outside

I do have to disagree here. Self-esteem ultimately must come from outside...just not from other people. As a Christian I believe that self-acceptance is rooted in knowing that I have intrinsic worth to God irrespective of what other people think of me. It's not about who I am or what I have or haven't done, but about who God is and what He's done for all of us.

porjo··on Show HN: FreshTube – show latest videos from YouTube channels
Thanks for the tip.

> You don't need a Google account or API key (isn't that basically the same as being logged in?)

Yeah, the key is a pain but once setup it's set and forget. Not being logged in is about not having my usage tracked at such a fine grained level - not only on my Youtube account, but across the entire Google ecosystem.
