porjo··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
> Sure, if you ignore the part where they kept bombing Gaza,

The answer is in the post you replied to.

>> Unfortunately Hamas took over Gaza shortly after and shot some 12k+ rockets into southern Israel

porjo··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
I respect your stance. A couple counter points from personal experience: even if I can't skip the ads, I'm not paying attention - I immediately mute/tune out. And the ads are typically so obnoxious that the reflex to ignore/avoid is only magnified. Is that so different from having a mechanism to auto skip/mute?
porjo··on Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month
Fyi,there's a comment on the Omarchy-M annoucement [0] referencing Touch ID

> Dj is writing the GPU drivers, and got Touch ID working by talking directly to the Secure Enclave

porjo··on Omarchy M
It's sad to think of the time and energy wasted duplicating work here rather than collaborating. As I understand it, there is no alternative as Omarchy cannot contribute to Asahi due to the Omarchy being AI driven and Asahi prohibiting AI contributions: https://asahilinux.org/llm-policy/
porjo··on Jellyfin 12.0
Swiftfin, Moonfin are two Jellyfin clients for Apple TV.
porjo··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Not OP. I'm a huge fan of Asahi and use it on my M2 MBP. There are some significant downsides in particular battery life is nowhere near what you'll get from MacOS due to inability to go into low power sleep state, and buggy DP alt mode for external monitors. I hope that will change but it's not there yet.
porjo··on [dead]
If he's not receiving favourable treatment by X and the income he receives is properly declared to whoever needs to know, then I don't see a problem here. Whether or not what he's saying is anymore decisive than the Gov policies he speaks out against is a matter for debate. Where can we have that debate freely apart from X?
porjo··on Show HN: See how much your AI knows about you
I've been using Grok daily for months, personal only, signed in - it returned zero known facts.
porjo··on A joke domain purchase turned in geopolitical warfare
Afaik Tel Aviv has city wide bike share, so guessing that's what OP was using.
porjo··on A CGo-free port of SQLite/SQLite3
> 3. github.com/mordernc-org/sqlite is the read-only mirror of the primary repo

Typo, should be: github.com/modernc-org/sqlite

porjo··on Indoor Wi-Fi Roaming with OpenWRT
I use the (older, lower spec) TP-Link EAP225 with Openwrt and it's been great standalone. The single ethernet port is slightly annoying for a router, but PoE makes up for it.
porjo··on Music for Programming
Agreed! I like music that can be enjoyed either active or passive listening. The main requirement is that it have no vocals. Here's my go-to Spotify playlist while coding.

porjo··on Show HN: I made a YouTube search form with advanced filters
I use https://porjo.github.io/freshtube/ almost daily. It requires a Google API key but only have to set it once.
porjo··on Lombard Effect
Ever been to a social event where, by the end, everyone is yelling at each other to be heard over the noise of other people yelling at each other! I give you the Lombard effect.
porjo··on 'It's ridiculous': publicans bemused by rise of single-file queues to get served
The traditional way of ordering a drink at a bar requires a small degree of engagement with your fellow patrons and bar staff. In my experience people under 30 just don't want to 'engage' with strangers: make eye contact, smile, make small talk. I've noticed this in the work place with younger colleagues and with hospitality staff in general. It's not surprising they would prefer to form a queue and take their turn before hurrying back to the safety of their group of friends.

Meanwhile they're so high value, organised criminals are stealing them from driveways and shipping them to middle east: https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/family-...
porjo··on Show HN: Ferrite – Markdown editor in Rust with native Mermaid diagram rendering
I don't want to diminish the effort put into this project, but it's a reminder to me of just how many markdown editors there are out there! And yet I'm still searching for the holy grail:

- wysiwyg editor (not live preview)

- simplicity: single binary that can be pointed at a directory of markdown files

- fast launch time, low latency UI

- cross platform

- comes with basic 'extras' like tables & code block support

I actually really like the Confluence editor experience. If I could get that in an FOSS 'offline' package, my needs would be met.

porjo··on iCloud Photos Downloader
I use this to sync my wife's photos to Immich and it works great, however the auth process is a bit of a pain (not the fault of icloudpd) and have to reauth every few months.
porjo··on iCloud Photos Downloader
Because icloudpd supports downloading photos from icloud and rclone does not (yet): https://github.com/rclone/rclone/pull/8734
porjo··on Shipmap.org
It's depressing to note that air travel accounts for similar total yearly emissions but is up to 50x more polluting on a per unit of cargo/people transported.
porjo··on HPV vaccination reduces oncogenic HPV16/18 prevalence from 16% to <1% in Denmark
> Unless you plan to remain completely celibate,

Or you (and your future partner) practice abstinence until you're ready to commit to a lifelong monogamous relationship.

porjo··on DOOM could have had PC Speaker Music
Good times! I made one as a kid and remember thinking there is no way in heck this thing will work. My mind was blown when it worked first time.
porjo··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
Australian here and the sentiment is the same. Drive-through is tolerable but dine-in is not pleasant due to basic cleaning like sweeping, wiping of tables not being done.
porjo··on My stages of learning to be a socially normal person
Related: "just be yourself" is horrible advice, on its own, to give a young person. It must be accompanied by an understanding that there is a social game to learn to play, and that "being yourself" is not always compatible with playing the game well.
porjo··on Opencloud – An alternative to Nextcloud written in Go
The GitHub org page gives a better overview: https://github.com/opencloud-eu/
porjo··on TrueNAS on Arm is finally a thing
I've been on Debian since the switch and had no issues when OS updates. The kubernetes to docker transition was a little bumpy however.
porjo··on Show HN: Whittle – A shrinking word game
Nice work! One suggestion would be to allow moving a letter (or space) to a new location, like a life line - one or two moves allowed per game.
porjo··on Australia’s gains in wheat-farm productivity
> They kind of have free land available to anyone who wants to farm.

Australia is vast and empty. In the interior, rivers are few and far between and the landscape is flat and featureless. Any 'free' land is going to be essentially desert. Even if you could grow something on it, you wouldn't want to live there.
