popeshoe··on ChatGPT generated a puzzle game
It's still incredible you can coerce a language model to produce this, but it's not a new game, I've had it on my phone for a few years: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rohitpailw...
popeshoe··on YouTube isn’t for kids, but kids videos are among its most popular
Sometimes if you catch a new video soon after it's been uploaded you can see it's in a state before the recommendations have been generated, the few times I've seen it happen the recommendations were entirely kids videos with vibrant thumbnails and strange names.

I have no idea how youtube gets it's recommendations when this happens, but if it's some sort of randomish fallback list, I can easily believe that cheap, mass produced kids content is a huge fraction of youtube uploads/views.

popeshoe··on Show HN: A no-nonsense Jekyll theme for sensible blogging
I was going to post the same thing, I bet it looks great on a retina mac screen, but on my windows machine with a monitor too big for 1080p, something about it feels off.

Otherwise I think it looks great though, nice job!

popeshoe··on Ask HN: How can I do social good through programming?
If you're on HN you're probably also conscious of your philanthropy being used for the maximal good, in which case you may be interested in projects like https://www.effectivealtruism.org/
popeshoe··on CIA Declassified Coldwar Russian Jokes [pdf]
A Prague citizen came to local police station in fall 1968. At the desk he claimed "Officer, a Swiss soldier stole my Russian watch". Officer looked puzzled and responded "I guess you mean that a Russian soldier stole your Swiss watch." The man replied "It might be so, but remember that you said that. Not me."
popeshoe··on Annotated version of an original Deus Ex design doc surfaces
Deus Ex got me at the perfect time in my life (15 y/o pseudo-intellectual nerd) so I really loved the game, so reading this was great. Such was my nerd infatuation with this game, that as I was reading about the various locations, the corresponding music would pop into my brain almost immediately, a testament to the great soundtrack (eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FZ-12a3dTI )

Especially interesting is seeing how the times and what we expect from videogames have changed, on page 23 there's a dejected nod to people expecting a 90s first person game to have multiplayer, even though it's primarily a single player RPG, but they'll do it as a bullet point to go on the back of the box.

popeshoe··on Auto-GCAS Saves Unconscious F-16 Pilot
I'm kind of astounded that modern planes haven't had this feature for a long time
popeshoe··on I’ve Had a Cyberstalker Since I Was 12
Not a woman, but Garry of Garrysmod fame has a very interesting set of blog posts about dealing with and eventually befriending his internet stalker in an attempt to curb the guy's worst behavior.

popeshoe··on Vainglory vs. Clash Royale, and the future of “hardcore” games on mobile
As a big PC gamer I've basically abandoned mobile gaming as it feels like everything out there is trying to get my money by means ranging from insidious to annoying. This is compounded by the fact that browsing the google play games store is a showcase of shamelessness where different developers are releasing essentially identical clones of whatever's popular, it's kind of depressing.

The only mobile games I can bring myself to recommend are Andoku Sudoku, The little crane that could, and crossy road (which even includes monetisation schemes without feeling intensely annoying).

Suggestions for others would be appreciated

popeshoe··on Facewatch 'thief recognition' CCTV on trial in UK stores
This is clearly a play by the plastic surgery lobby to get people to have work done so they look less like known criminals.

popeshoe··on Who'll be the next president – Google Search
While it's kinda funny, I think it's made pretty clear that text is a summary generated from the first search result that is clearly linked below, only a moron would consider this an endorsement of Hillary by Google.
popeshoe··on Why did crime plummet in the US?
In The Better Angels of our Nature, Steven Pinker postulates that one likely reason for the increase in violent crime was the first set of baby boomers becoming teenagers, with rowdy young people outnumbering older ones who might control them by quite a large margin.
popeshoe··on Ask HN: New job is having me switch from Linux to Mac – how do I cope?
My biggest problem moving to OSX (from mostly windows) was the idiotic apple UK keyboard layout (US keyboards might not be such a big deal, so this stuff might not apply) so I found myself having to download a regular UK keyboard layout (http://liyang.hu/osx-british.xhtml), and Karabiner (https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/) to make OSX behave properly with my normal keyboard with the pageup/down and home/end keys

Once I sorted that out it was a relatively pleasant experience.

You might also want to install SmoothMouse (http://smoothmouse.com/) which tames OSX's ferocious mouse acceleration curve, and reduces the delay between moving the mouse and the screen updating to be imperceptible

popeshoe··on I Hate the News (2006)
I feel that this was and is a super myopic view to hold, while it's true that most of the worlds news probably doesn't affect you directly, it will almost certainly affect you indirectly, since you live in the world.

It boils down to the same reason you should vote, sure you probably won't swing any elections, but in the same way your voting might influence politicians into listening to the things you care about, by being aware what is happening in and around your city/country/planet you make it harder for people doing shady shit who rely on general public apathy to get away with it.

popeshoe··on How the 'John Oliver Effect' Is Having a Real-Life Impact
I owe you my thanks, I used your site years ago when I first discovered the Bugle and was religiously listening to all the older episodes that had fallen off the Times feed.
popeshoe··on Is 'SimCity' Homelessness a Bug or a Feature?
I basically agree, it's more of a problem if the rampant homelessness is due to bad code that makes it too common (as opposed to imperfect design of your city), which given the history of the game isn't beyond the realms of possibility, eg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g418BSF6XBQ
popeshoe··on Is 'SimCity' Homelessness a Bug or a Feature?
As far as I remember it just makes his family and friends upset, and anybody who witnesses the death, which is usually always preferable to him going mental and sentencing your master metalworker to death because he refused to make -=* platinum trumpets*=-
popeshoe··on Is 'SimCity' Homelessness a Bug or a Feature?
In America if you collect 100 coins you get an extra life.

In America if you get seriously hurt you get taken to hospital and lose some money

In America you can only carry 2 guns

In America if you try and run forward and sideways at once the two velocities are combined and you run twice as fast

I guess some of them work

popeshoe··on Is 'SimCity' Homelessness a Bug or a Feature?
It's an amusing thought, but I imagine that most of these people realise homelessness isn't really a problem you can simply fix by following some set of procedures. Ultimately it's a game to be played for entertainment, and if you can get some people to think about social issues as they play it that's wonderful, but it's still supposed to be enjoyable. Clearly homeless people in the game are impeding some peoples enjoyment and it's a problem that is not obvious to solve.

Some games that offer more freedom let you solve problems like these in more interesting ways, for example when I played Dwarf Fortress (years ago now), a common strategy was to make the nobledwarfs accommodation floodable with lava, so if they got too uppity with their demands (sometimes nobles would insist that you make certain items or not sell a certain items or they'd get furious and make everybody else unhappy) they could be dispatched. I think it'd be funny if Sim City offered a similar option.

popeshoe··on Pilot Who Survived Space Crash Says Parachute Opened Itself
Does anybody know if it's common that an aircraft can be structurally compromised like that due to user error?

I can easily imagine the stress on the airframe doing manoeuvres like this, if I were a pilot I'd be absolutely terrified that it were possible for me to flip a switch and just have the vehicle I'm in disintegrate around me.

edit: whoops, commented on a day old thread, what a dingus

popeshoe··on Windows systems set to be merged by Microsoft
Sounds like they're really doubling down on their devices that could never have succeeded because they were too late.

I kinda wish I could have been in the meeting where they decided that windows 8 should be the same for all their different devices, it sounds kind of appealing at first, 'One experience for mobile, tablet and desktop' until you think about it for a second.

popeshoe··on The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race – Agriculture
Maybe in a few thousand years time people will be reading about how the widespread adoption of computers and the internet in the 20th century was actually a catastrophe because before that it was so much easier to maintain your privacy and there weren't so many goddamn robots everywhere.
