pope_meat··on A New Navy Weapon Stops You from Talking
Crowd control weapons are a good thing, actually. The worst part about a democracy is when those pesky little people start gathering outside, it really gets in the way of making money.

I welcome this more humane oppression! Things are looking brighter by the day.

pope_meat··on New Texas Abortion Law Likely to Unleash a Torrent of Lawsuits Against Education
You're going to have to clarify, because right now it seems like you're suggesting that "anti-life" folks position is "force abortion even if the person doesn't want it" and I don't believe that is the case. Or do you mean something else?
pope_meat··on Do psychedelics make you liberal? Not always
Perhaps it might be worth examining your views on animals some more, while your perspective isn't uncommon, it might be worth analyzing it somewhat, as there are also a lot of people who look at a pig or a wolf and have a very different experience. It's always good to understand yourself more, and hallucinogens are a heck of a tool to do that, if you can sort out the root of the issue. I suspect you might have stopped a bit short of the root cause (fear/uncertainty towards non-humans)

Could be wrong, but that's what jumped out at me.

pope_meat··on U.S. companies lash out at Texas law changes, including abortion ban
This community has a lot of people in positions that can have a big impact on the direction of society. Going in to an echo chamber somewhere else achieves nothing.
pope_meat··on U.S. companies lash out at Texas law changes, including abortion ban
Insisting on keeping things apolitical is a political statement in itself, just in favor of the status quo, rather than in opposition.

You can't escape politics.

pope_meat··on Amazon’s answer to delivery driver shortage: Pot smokers
Hunter gatherer society actually included A LOT of downtime. People are being worked to death, and it's reflected in the deteriorating mental health that's prevalent.

I'll have to ask the guy next time I see him if he feels like "it's voluntary", because someone on the internet said "well, actually, they choose this!"

The contractor/gig economy is absolutely gross, and the vast majority of people are turning a blind eye because it's just so nice "for the consumer"

The consumer is actually more important than the human. Are you seriously going to tell me you don't understand what's wrong here?

pope_meat··on The American Housing Market Is Stifling Mobility
How's that working for the folks of Detroit?
pope_meat··on Amazon’s answer to delivery driver shortage: Pot smokers
It's amazing we have so many volunteers for some of the worst jobs around. Happy volunteers, voluntarily working. You can see it on their faces, at 8:37pm pulling packages out of a van and running to a door, happy little contractors, happily volunteering.
pope_meat··on Retailers are spending millions to combat organized theft from stores
Funny how commentary that actually speaks truth to power drops to the bottom of the comments sections.

Don't lose hope op, this place makes it seem like we're in the minority, but we are not.

The human spirit will not be crushed and commodified that easily, we'll cut the nose the spite the face if we have to.

pope_meat··on You’ve Never Seen the Opioid Crisis Like This Before: A Review of Empire of Pain
The crackdown 10 years ago drove a bunch of people from Vicodin/Percocet to heroin.

Bravo with your moral panic, turned a bad situation in to a nightmare. (This second part is a comment in general, not a direct reply to the parent comment)

pope_meat··on Apple Delays Rollout of Child Safety Features
How could a big bank like Lehman Brothers with their highly paid risk analysis people fail?

How could Rome fall?

The sun never set on the British Empire.

Both me and my partner were very close to joining the apple eco system because we felt completely betrayed by G, now I'm researching alternative OS to flash my phone. We both abandoned Google search and browsers. The only FAANG I'm not actively avoiding is Netflix.

pope_meat··on Tesla aims to release $25K electric car in 2023, likely without a steering wheel
This way you have no choice but to rear end an emergency vehicle. Which I guess does take your liability away.
pope_meat··on Nomura Tells Staff Not to Smoke Cigarettes When Working from Home
Glad to hear that, and I hope that perspective becomes more prevalent!
pope_meat··on Nomura Tells Staff Not to Smoke Cigarettes When Working from Home
Nicotine affects cognition and behavior (1). In smokers and nonsmokers, it produces small improvements in finger-tapping rate, motor response on tests of focused and sustained attention, and recognition memory (2). In smokers, tobacco deprivation can impair cognitive performance, and subsequent nicotine administration or smoking can reverse these deficits (3–5).

pope_meat··on Reddit bans anti-vaccine subreddit r/NoNewNormal after site-wide protest
I'm wondering what it says about us humans that the only way to maintain even a modicum of civility is heavy censorship.

Also, don't these folks realize that Jesus was Jewish... like, what kind of brain worms crawling in their heads that they can in one breath proclaim faith to an Abrahamic religion, hate for people from that part of the world, and how morality comes from a society following their preferred religion.

Feels pretty hopeless.

Big yikes. That is not a good place.

pope_meat··on A former Marine was pulled over for tailgating. Police took $87,000
Laws don't need to make sense, they just need to be enforced.
pope_meat··on International Space Station facing irreparable failures, Russia warns
"but Sir, the plane literally destroys itself when it's flying..."

"I said ship it!"

Luckily, no one is responsible if things go wrong!

pope_meat··on NSA: There's no such thing as a quantum computer that'll crack current ciphers
These are the same folks who don't operate a mass drag net that was and is spying on everyone, that's how you know you can trust their every word, they are obviously civil servants that answer to us and can face consequences and repercussions for betraying that trust.
pope_meat··on States will allow users to add driver’s license and state IDs to Apple Wallet
Yes yes, let's blur the line between corporations and the state. What dystopia, look at the shiny phone.
pope_meat··on Reddit communities ‘go dark’ in protest over Covid misinformation
Selfhoster as your name, crying for restrictions. Wild.

I'm vaccinated.

pope_meat··on Linux on the Framework Laptop
And then slowly inevitably do a 180 on all the original principles in the name of bigger numbers between Q1 and Q2.
pope_meat··on Robert Sapolsky on Depression (2009)
Everyone deserves compassion and understanding... except for me.

Obviously this is nonsense, I know for a fact that it's nonsense...and yet, I'm still a dumb piece of shit that can't internalize the fact that it's nonsense.

Spiral spiral spiral.

pope_meat··on Do political stickers work? (2020)
Fingers crossed for Giant Meteor in 2024. It's a rather sad state of affairs when "destroy it all" is a genuine opinion.

I've been advocating for a new political party that I call "nuke everything party" and the platform is very simple, launch all the nukes, and party until it all ends.

pope_meat··on Satanists Demand FDA Give Them Access to Abortion Drugs for Religious Ritual
Stay out of politics, your rewards come in heaven. This place is for us heathens.
pope_meat··on Do political stickers work? (2020)
People with political bumper stickers are braver than me. In an ever more polarized political climate it's almost dangerous to declare a side openly. But then again, without risk, there's no chance for reward, and silencing yourself for safety reasons just reinforces the status quo as working.

What a fun little nightmare.

pope_meat··on Regulators and Reality
The whole FAANG bunch is trouble, the only company I don't have an extremely negative association for is Netflix.
pope_meat··on Tardigrades Walk
I vow to never put a tardigrade on to a glass surface, watching the little thing struggle for some reason made me feel bad.
pope_meat··on Ask HN: What can /u/spez realistically do?
Don't know where it all went wrong but I deleted my 10+ year badge accounts close to 2 years ago now.

I do not miss it.

pope_meat··on The U.S. Army tried portable nuclear power at remote bases 60 years ago
Because the lady of the house really wanted stainless steel appliances in the updated kitchen.
