pooriaazimi··on Losing it All
Have you read Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London"? http://www.amazon.com/Down-Paris-London-George-Orwell/dp/015...

I'm sure you'll enjoy it...

pooriaazimi··on Fish shell
Well, "ridiculous_fish", the guy who sort of revived the fish shell is an engineer on the AppKit team at Apple: http://ridiculousfish.com

I remember installing and using fish 4 or 5 years ago; it was not a great experience -- but after he "took over", I switched and couldn't be happier with fish.

pooriaazimi··on The Earl Grey programming language
IcedCoffeeScript had await/defer three of four years ago: https://github.com/maxtaco/coffee-script/

But I agree, excellent set of features.

pooriaazimi··on Author’s Note 119: Shameless Blegging
No. The first few chapters might sound a bit off-putting (though, personally, I like it), but it gets much, much better after chapter 4 or 5. And after chapter 10, it is just a joy to read.

If you're into audiobooks, don't miss the podcast: http://www.hpmorpodcast.com -- It is excellently read by multiple voices.

pooriaazimi··on The Benefits of Being Cold
You're most likely familiar with Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London" and "The Road to Wigan Pier", two of the finest books ever written.

The first is his "vivid and moving account of life below poverty line", first in Paris, when he, after resigning being a servant of the Empire as a police officer in Burma, had to resort to low-wage, hard, menial 17-hour works in Paris restaurants, and later when he lived as a "tramp" in London, going from spike to spike, meeting others like him.

I don't know if you'd "enjoy" these books though... But they are unrivaled in their shrewdness and, well, it is Orwell and he can write better than anyone.

pooriaazimi··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
I also wanted to say HPMoR :) if you want to start, I'd suggest listening to the excellent podcast: http://www.hpmorpodcast.com - the first 10 episodes are slightly amateurish, but after that it's really, really well done.

I would say HPMoR is like Gödel Escher Bach, but slightly simpler and more approachable, and looks at stuff from a different angle. And Eliezer is an excellent writer, just like D. Hofstadter -- and his style is even more fun!

If you're on HN, then you'll enjoy this book immensely.

pooriaazimi··on Logitech K480 – Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard
Ordinarily, Cmd+` switches between windows, but when you're Cmd+Tabbing (when the switcher is active), Cmd+` is essentially the same as Cmd+Shift+Tab (i.e., it selects the previous application). It's actually much more convenient to press Cmd+`, if you get used to it :)
pooriaazimi··on As the Mac Turns 30, Apple Ponders ‘Post-PC’ Era
Please don't dignify trolls with an answer. Just downvote them and move on.
pooriaazimi··on Ubuntu HTML5 SDK
You can use JetBrain's AppCode if you dislike (despise) Xcode :) It's written in Java, but at least it doesn't crash every couple of days (possibly corrupting(!) .xcodeproject files).

And the Modern ObjC (with ARC, @properties, blocks, new @literals, awesome and useful clang errors, etc.) is much, much better than it was around iPhone OS 3.0! The signal/noise ratio of a typical iOS app is now maybe twice that of an app written in the bad old days.

pooriaazimi··on Is Ruby Fast Yet?
Tools like https://github.com/MiniProfiler/rack-mini-profiler really help with the N+1, and general insight into how long database calls usually take.

Relevant RailsCast: http://railscasts.com/episodes/368-miniprofiler?view=asciica...

pooriaazimi··on OS X: About Mail Update for Mavericks
There were two GMs. I guess you're running the first one. Update to the second GM (aka the public release, 13A603) and you'll be fine.
pooriaazimi··on Fish shell 2.1
This is the biggest change:

> When tab-completing a file, fish will first attempt prefix matches (foo matches foobar), then substring matches (ooba matches foobar), and lastly subsequence matches (fbr matches foobar). For example, in a directory with files foo1.txt, foo2.txt, foo3.txt…, you can type only the numeric part and hit tab to fill in the rest.

This is really brilliant! I always wanted that (without knowing it).

pooriaazimi··on iOS7 has broken Audiobooks
Is that an m4b file (the "official" way), or just a collection of mp3's shoved together to form a book ("Part of a compilation")? The former has been broken (especially on iPad) since iOS 5, and the latter has many issues but at least you "can" see how many chapters there are, and select them.

See, for example, these support thread with hundreds of comments: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16397272#16397272

The sad thing is that they don't give 3rd parties access to m4b metadata (chapter name, length and cover), and they themselves have broken their Music.app's ability to parse them. So nobody else can fix this mess.

pooriaazimi··on Watch how fast people are upgrading to iOS 7
There's also David Smith's stats (he's added an hourly widget): http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/

Currently iOS 7 is at 4.6%

pooriaazimi··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
And Rumsfeld said "I stand for 8-10 hours a day. Why is standing limited to four hours?" and asked for detainees to be forced to stand up in "stress positions" for more than the previously specified (and already inhuman and torturous) 4 hours...

N.B.: I'm not pulling out a strawman, or claiming you agree in any way with what Rumsfeld did. I'm just pointing out that your logic could, and actually does, lead to such inhumane practices. So don't be too hasty to dismiss stuff like this just based on your personal experience and preferences. I'd personally die without drinking ample amount of water (not an illness; just habit, and it would make me really, really nervous and angry if you denied me water).

pooriaazimi··on Snowden granted 1-year asylum in Russia, leaves airport
When there are no "good" governments left (and the extent of your own country's graciousness is "not seek death penalty" for you), your options are limited. Put yourself in his position. What else could he do? Stay in the US and be subject to the same fate as Manning (possibly even worse)?
pooriaazimi··on XKeyscore: NSA program collects 'nearly everything a user does on the internet'
Just FYI (almost certainly of no importance because this individual was chosen at random for the slides): his name (both first and surname) are Persian. I'd guess he was an Iranian (graduate) student who has decided to stay in Canada after his studies; possibly to be "free" from an oppressive government's espionage and meddling in his private life. The irony...
pooriaazimi··on How to kill an unresponsive SSH session
It might have faulty implementation for how it glues security features together, or encrypts the traffic data. I think the parent comment is talking about this kind of "audit" (i.e., not theoretically, but in action and by perusing the source code).
pooriaazimi··on Sustaining git-annex development
As I understand it, HFS+ can silently corrupt your data; so, Time Machine could potentially propagate that "corrupt" data all the way through your backup disks (and possibly wipe out older, "correct" data!)

We need integrity checking both at file-system level and at backup-solution level. If I'm not mistaken, with Time Machine on an HFS+ volume, we don't have the former, and the latter is file-based and not block-based (making it not very efficient, space-wise).

pooriaazimi··on Reasons to Choose Opera over Chrome
It's in Help -> Troubleshooting

Read this article to see what it preserves (or "tries to preserve"): http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix...

FWIW, I just tried it and it indeed made things a whole lot faster.

pooriaazimi··on Reasons to Choose Opera over Chrome
It did indeed! Thanks!

BTW, I didn't find "Reset Firefox" in the about:config page - it was in Help -> Troubleshooting Information.

pooriaazimi··on Reasons to Choose Opera over Chrome
I have the latest versions of Safari and Firefox, on the latest version of OS X. Safari has about 15 extensions, has been used daily for the past 5 years (and I haven't deleted its history, though I clear the cache one every couple of months). And I use Firefox "only" if I need to access the web-based GMail (which happens roughly every 2 months), and there are no extensions installed in Firefox.

Considering the above, Safari still is (much) faster than Firefox on my machine. I don't care if it can render JS 5% faster - the whole experience is sluggish and slow on my machine. Of course, YMMV.

Just wanted to point it out to you that there are legitimate reasons why people say Firefox is slow.

pooriaazimi··on Iranian Hackers Post Images Over JFK Airport From UAV That Was Hijacked In March
> Translating this forum is hard. They uses a specific language...

I'm always fascinated by the way these people's minds seem to work! Reading his posts, this "DarkPassenger" fellow seems even crazier than our good HN friend losethos: https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=losethos

pooriaazimi··on I understood gender discrimination once I added “Mr.” to my resume
You should make another "fake" account (this time, with a feminine name, but with the same wealth of information as the macho-fake one) and see which of the two fake ones gets more (professional) attention and compare them with each other, not your real account.
