poooogles··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
Shit all. New style JSA is £74.35 a week plus you could also potentially claim Universal Credit (if you've got under £16k savings) which is £94. £730 or so a month is not enough to live on if you're having to pay for your accommodation in most of the south.

>Is it fish caught in that same day like you can get in any Greek taverna in the Cyclades?

Yes. There's huge amount of fish bought in from inside the UK from Cornwall/Brixham etc etc. Never mind all the stuff that's air freighted here.

>Or frozen fish brought in from half a continent away?

All fish in the EU is frozen anyway [1].

>You don't get government unemployment benefits in the UK if you have >16k in savings

This isn't true. You'll get new style JSA for 6 months [1] pending you have contributed NI for the past 2/3 years which almost all will have.

https://www.gov.uk/jobseekers-allowance/eligibility

You're talking about universal credit which yes you won't qualify for with greater than 16k savings (pension savings or HTB ISA are however are excluded).

poooogles··on British Airways will suspend over 35,000 of its employees
IAG/BA have a 7.35bn euros of cash in the bank so I think you can probably separate them from most of the others looking for government payouts. It wouldn't surprise me if they buy up some of the competition when they're cheap in the coming months.

The real question is shouldn't they be using some of that 7.5bn to pay their fucking staff. Priorities are all wrong.

poooogles··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2020)
Element Human | London (UK) | Full-time, Onsite initially with remote progression (in the office for a few days every quarter for example).

100% remote for the foreseeable future, probably until the end of summer.

We're using machine learning to read human behaviour; we use eye-tracking to track attention, facial coding to understand engagement, and implicit testing to quantify memorability. We've just launched a new platform and we're looking for more engineers so we can expand our offering. Our stack consists of; Python, Postgres, PyTorch and GCP. We offer a flexible working environment with a great team and unlimited holiday; we focus on hiring the right people then getting out the way and letting them do what they do best.

Interview process is screen call, small take home tech test doing similar work to what you'd do in the job, "face to face" interview, short culture call then offer.

We're hiring for all the following...

- Senior web developers (Javascript and Python/Django). We're looking for senior people who are keen to become team leads in the next year as we expand the team. If you're stronger at one or the other that's fine but a mixture of skills is key.

- Developers and junior developers (front end, backend or devops).

- Data analysts and data engineers (SQL and Python).

Or if you think you'd be a good fit for us; send us your CV!

>Semi-related but for transit apps, I much prefer the dedicated "Transit" app over any of the mapping services.

Have you tried Citymapper? It looks pretty similar in features and covers a different set of cities (there's some crossover but not as much as I'd of thought), might be useful.

poooogles··on What's the smallest country that can fit everyone standing six feet apart?
>• Beer served in pints by on-licenses, millilitres by off-licences

Sure but a pint is defined as 568ml. The only one that really is quirky is how people haven't yet grasped kilometers yet they're the easiest to grok, it's just 1.6 * miles.

poooogles··on Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?
This is the concerning thing for me, as an asthmatic if I stop taking meds I'm already 30% down on lung capacity, adding another 20% on top of that is scary. That 20% can't be mitigated by meds either.

poooogles··on Australia sues Facebook over Cambridge Analytica
The fact that we (the UK) only fined Facebook £500k [1] is an utter scandal. You can probably say $529bn is too much, but the appropriate amount might be somewhere in the middle of the two...

poooogles··on Measure code execution time accurately in Python
Eurgh for starters using `time.time()` is a bad idea because it calls gettimeofday which is susceptible to clock changes. `time.perf_counter` is what you want to use as it can never go backwards and it will always be from the highest granularity clock.

poooogles··on A Guy on Reddit Turns $766 into $107,758 on Two Options Trades
>analfarmer

His trades were just a sad eye on what must be gambling addiction. To go from nothing to $750k dollars in a couple of weeks and then watch him trade it all away over the next 2 weeks was just tragic.

poooogles··on A Guy on Reddit Turns $766 into $107,758 on Two Options Trades
Check his post history, he's still very active on reddit. He's rightfully pretty cagey about it from what I remember.

For all parties it's probably best if they just ignore it and pretend it never happened. Robin Hood is liable to some extent as they didn't highlight the risk in the trade.

poooogles··on A Guy on Reddit Turns $766 into $107,758 on Two Options Trades
If you're after a more interesting trade on reddit thread then ir0nymans box spreads are legendary [1]. Invests $5k and proceeds to turn that into -$57k and ends up banning box spreads on Robin Hood.

poooogles··on Ask HN: How many of you have been impacted by a layoff?
Got laid off in March. Spent all summer on holiday doing what I wanted (which was mostly just fucking around in a few different countries and doing nothing related to technology). I got laid off in 2008 as well which was a very different story and was the reason I went to university.

Depending upon where you are in your life it can be liberating or a death sentence and anywhere in between.
