poooogles··on A lesser known mechanism for alcohol tolerance
Yes. Often you'll do 3 - 5 tastings a week, sometimes even two in a day so spitting really helps keep the alcohol intake down.

The thing that really gets you is palette exhaustion though. Taste 40 ripe Cali cabs and they all start tasting the same after a point...

poooogles··on DevOps, SRE, and Platform Engineering
For the first couple of years it's possible. I'm not sure it's going to work past year 3 or maybe 4.

Looking for Lead SRE or Senior Python roles. Open to Clojure/Rust roles as well but I'd need a little longer to get up to speed as I've had a couple of years out from them. Not open to roles in betting.
poooogles··on Entire German bond yield curve back in sub-zero territory
>But if the asset bubble bursts and your home loses most worth.

Luckily the primary function of a home is to provide shelter. You don't have to worry about being out on the street if you're unemployed (pending you can afford local taxes).

poooogles··on Medals at Tokyo olympics are recycled from discarded electronic equipment
We benefited from it in London, I think we all wanted it too. Even if it kind of was an austerity Olympics compared to before it and after it? Sure we wasted some money here and there (was who the fuck needs a giant slide) but overall it turned an industrial wasteland into a useful area for East London.
poooogles··on Why we don't dole out many compliments, but should
I tend to go with only compliment things that you can change. Body parts, can't change them so they're off limits. Outfit you can change (and they will have actively chosen themselves) so go wild.

Just you know, don't be weird.

poooogles··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
But the only way for the lump sum to double and the repayment to stay the same is to lengthen the loan period?
poooogles··on How to circumvent Sci-Hub ISP block
>There's a smaller set of non-optional blocks (pirate/torrent sites) which you need a VPN to get around.

This https://unblockit.pw/ also does the job too (scihub is at the bottom).

poooogles··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
>When the lump sum doubles yet the monthly payment is the same, has the cost really changed?

Yes of course it has. You've just over doubled (interest rates are low but they're not nil) the time it's taken to pay back that loan.

poooogles··on Australian Federal Police and FBI nab underworld figures using encrypted app
>The exact term they used in the docs escapes my memory

Parallel reconstruction is the phrase you're after.

poooogles··on Uber used 50 Dutch shell companies to dodge taxes
>Do you think tax compliance is higher in small local businesses than large mega corps?

I can't speak for anywhere but the UK, but yes 100%. Small businesses overall tax burden is much higher than large multinationals.

>don’t understand/appreciate the advantage of mirrorless

No mirror means easier and smaller packaging due to not having to make space for the mirrorbox and prism.

poooogles··on My Python testing style guide (2017)
They're already grouped by module which normally provides enough granularity (in my experience, I've only scaled this up to 50k LOC apps though so YMMV).
poooogles··on Elderly patients 23% more likely to die if surgery is on the surgeon’s birthday
If you want to read more on the background of this The Checklist Manifesto is a great book and has lots of applications when it comes to IT operations. Stupid checklists in markdown that you can check off as you go through have certainly improved our performance in ad hoc tasks that we don't automate.
poooogles··on YouTube broke for 40% of the UK population after rolling out 60 FPS videos
>Wow, are internet speeds in the UK actually that slow?

Yes, https://www.speedtest.net/result/10279588044. I share this connection with 5 other people in the evenings, thankfully only 2 of us use it during the day so video conferencing is passable most of the time.

poooogles··on EU launches legal action against UK for breaching withdrawal agreement
In the minds of many conservatives Cameron was very successful for the first 5 years so I'd ignore his first term.
poooogles··on EU launches legal action against UK for breaching withdrawal agreement
I do wonder how long Boris is going to last as PM before he's thrown to the dogs by the 1922 committee. I assume once the steaming pile of shit that is Brexit is somehow "completed" by the end of the year he will step down rather than be replaced. If there's anything the conservatives have been good at over the past 10 years it's recognising when a leader has had their time so they can pivot to someone new.
poooogles··on Complexity Scientist Beats Traffic Jams Through Adaptation
>one thing I like about UK traffic regulations is that it's not actually illegal to cross against a red light as a pedestrian if you're not obstructing anybody.

Correct "jaywalking" is not a thing here and I think there'd be an uprising if it was.

>Obviously if there's an accident you're going to be liable if you crossed against a red light

Even this is not blankly the case, quite often it would return a split liability result [1], some recent examples [2] are infuriating.

First and foremost thanks and good luck @antirez, your comments and pointers here have been nothing less than amazing.

On a more selfish note, how is this going to affect Redis development?

poooogles··on Katie Hopkins permanently suspended from Twitter
We don't have 'free speech' here in the UK. Her comments have instigated hate crimes [1]. This isn't a hateful act; she's an awful person that doesn't need amplifying.

poooogles··on Mount Everest is visible from Kathmandu for first time in living memory
>What are the benefits of focusing on biodiversity preservation?

They're not always aligned. There's many more issues that come out of low biodiveristy than just those affected by climate change. One important one that's unrelated would be high biodiversity environments have more rich soils that are better for farming. Similarly more biodiverse environments are more resistant to disease; Ash dieback disease that affects the Ash in Europe appears not be fatal to the tree in mixed diverse forest [1].

Diverse ecosystems are also more resistant to climate change [2], so there's that too.
