pontifier··on Fusion energy breakthrough by Livermore Lab
I see I'm a little late to the discussion, but this is very similar to the patented Fusion device I've been proposing for several years here. http://www.DDproFusion.com

The main idea behind my reactor is to contain NIF like explosions in magnetic fields. I've been trying to get a test reactor built for a long time, and my plans have been hampered by a theft earlier this year.

A huge difference between the current NIF device and my proposed device is the speed of implosions and the strength of the field. While the NIF device must be re-built before every implosion, my device creates an environment where the implosions form as part of a harmonic oscillation. The ions are allowed to travel their entire individual cyclotron trajectories before they return to the implosion site... my target frequency was 2.4GHz, which is a useful frequency for direct conversion and COTS components.

pontifier··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
I bought 20kw of solar from China that arrived this year, the quote I got for installation was about what I paid for the whole system. I'm thinking about just installing it myself.
pontifier··on Using clocks to detect ultralight dark matter
Hearing about how far we have advanced this technology gives me such hope in humanity. Even if most of the world feels like it's falling apart, there is still progress.
pontifier··on Individuals prefer to harm their own group rather than help an opposing group
Explains a lot of counterintuitive behavior that just defies all of my prior attempts to understand.

WTF is wrong with people.

pontifier··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
Moving Murfie to Pine Bluff has been a disaster. The entire situation has been bad for Murfie users and myself.

I'm coming up on 3 years now with very minimal progress on returning media to users and getting the site fully operational.

There are a lot of places where in hindsight I could have made better decisions. At every point the best course seemed to stand out, only to sour with unexpected obstacles.

At first I thought I could stay in the warehouse, but then the returns became too much to complete before I had to vacate. COVID struck, and delayed the container move. Then I couldn't use my warehouse, and couldn't unload the containers. This is delayed efforts to return media and restore files that would have been easy to replace if I could unload the containers. Meanwhile Murphy customers have been 3 years without their discs or access to their media. I feel terrible about it. Some have died without getting their media.

I'm still fighting to do the right thing. I've filed a lawsuit against the city for refusing to issue permits, and I'm constantly looking for solutions, but I feel like I've failed a lot of people.

pontifier··on The $1.9B Powerball draw is still delayed
If you could buy one of every number for $600M then even if you have to split the prize 2 ways the payout is greater than the cost when the pot is that big.

Mathematically though, your odds on a single ticket don't change, and realistically even a smaller jackpot is going to be life changing. So does it really matter?

I still bought a bunch of tickets. I'll just hope that I'm in a simulation and the real me is the one on the outside running it :) If I win, prepare for world peace.

pontifier··on Ask HN: Do you believe there's really an alternative to Twitter?
An alternative... It's an interesting question. Twitter seems to be the only place where individuals voices are emphasized. Most other platforms focus discussion around news articles. Twitter doesn't follow that format.

It really does feel like one of the only places you can just speak without that speech being attached to another topic.

pontifier··on Justice Department announces takedown of catalytic converter theft ring
I recently had a couple of catalytic converters stolen. I think the same guys stole about 20 grand worth of tools and scientific equipment. I have their faces and vehicle on video, but they haven't been caught.

pontifier··on #c0ffee Is the Color
I like safest and desist
pontifier··on #c0ffee Is the Color
Interesting. The missing piece for me was that invalid HEX characters parse as a zero.

Edit: Actually, it looks like they are using leet speech substitutions like "5" for an "S" which makes these a little less cool than I thought.

pontifier··on Show HN: Stable Diffusion, but Fast and with No Filters
I love it. I feel like I'm looking into a magic window because the interface is so clean and minimal. It feels like opening a gift each time the loading wheel spins. Great job!

That being said, you might want to add a link to a faq talking about the legality of using the generated images.

pontifier··on A global house-price slump is coming?
I'm thinking that the only viable solution to the log jam in construction is to have a structural engineering AI help people build homes and guide construction and renovation.

If the AI says it's safe, the local inspectors will have to agree.

I'm so sick of the way things are done currently.

pontifier··on CT scans of batteries
The viewer is really worth checking out. The full model seems to be there, though some settings look disabled.

I can imagine making changes to a battery production line, scanning a few samples, and using the scans to tweak angles, speeds, stops etc.

I'm sure these scanners are expensive. Very cool though.

pontifier··on Ask HN: How to deal with regret of not having kids
I have three kids. I don't get to see them nearly as much as I want to. I live in another state. I moved here to start a business after I separated with their mother about 3 years ago. Now I regret almost everyday. I live in fear of the world they'll grow up in, and I miss them terribly.
pontifier··on Queueing Theory
Theme parks have made queueing a multi-billion dollar business.

I just spent a nightmarish time in Orlando. The theme parks there are insane, and I don't believe I'll ever go back. 2 of my friends and I literally stood in a two and a half hour queue for one ride and it cost us $150 each.

The ride was terrible, and the queue length was constantly being hidden. The companies have no incentive to increase throughput because building extremely long lines is cheaper than building efficient rides.

pontifier··on Ask HN: Why doesn’t HN have quality discussion around crypto?
We've all dipped our toes in that water already. It's no fun to swim in sewage.
pontifier··on The deception of “buying” digital movies
A key problem with zediva was that they were only offering rentals, not ownership. Ownership of a particular copy gives you rights that you don't have when renting.
pontifier··on The deception of “buying” digital movies
This is what I'm attempting to revive with Murfie/Crossies.

Right now, I'm dealing with unrelated problems with my warehouse so the service is only partly functional. In my opinion the basic model, with true ownership, should be completely legal under copyright law.

pontifier··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
I probably am. I had a dream a few days ago that I was in a plane crash, then a major world event happens just before I fly? The world feels very unstable at the moment.
pontifier··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
Makes me wonder what sorts of things will be triggered by this event. I bet security services are on high alert, and for some reason I'm a little worried about getting on my flight in a couple hours.
pontifier··on Digitizing Smell: Using Molecular Maps to Understand Odor
Thinking about smell a few years ago I realized that individual differences in odor perception might be due to missing smell receptors.

In color vision we have only three different kinds of cones. Color blindness due to a missing type of cone is present in a substantial portion of the population.

I believe one of my children is colorblind, and it took a long time to figure that out. With a missing smell receptor it would be even more difficult to detect the differences between people.

pontifier··on Korean nuclear fusion reactor achieves 100M°C for 30 seconds
Fusion? I've got a new and different design that needs testing. If anyone is interested there is more information at http://www.DDproFusion.com
pontifier··on The Accumulibrary (2014)
This is actually very similar to what I'm trying to build Murfie into. It's already very similar in that there is only the database organization. Eventually I see it as the final resting place for all physical media.
pontifier··on Stable Diffusion forming images from text: image snapshots at each step
I'm astonished at the evolution of the image and reminded of a documentary I saw about Picasso ( I think). He would paint the same painting again and again tweaking it slightly each time until he was satisfied.
pontifier··on Tell HN: Meetup.com is offering abandoned meetups to anyone willing to pay
This! I ran a small makerspace, and people would add the group but never show up at the space, and never contributed to anything. I felt like I had to keep paying because when I stopped they basically ransomed the group. I had a bunch of people panicking thinking the physical space was shutting down and that I was quiting.

Actually it ended up being a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. I won't have anything to do with meetup.com anymore after seeing it from the other side.

pontifier··on Ask HN: What's your strategy to handle your phone being stolen?
In 2014 I had my phone stolen by a couple of homeless people. I had footage of them and printed flyers with their faces clearly visible. I distributed the flyers around the local homeless areas and the thieves actually brought the phone back and left it where it would be found.

The SD card was gone, and they had tried to reset the phone. I was able to get into it with USB debugging and recovered about 3 Bitcoin that was only stored in a wallet on that device.

pontifier··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
Containers are repaired and under surveillance.
pontifier··on Slow Travel
I drove on back roads, not the freeway. Most cars had a very easy time passing me or going around me as traffic was light, and there was plenty of room on the road.
pontifier··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
Murfie died because of Google cloud costs.

It's a bit of a long story, but from what I was able to piece together, a Google cloud service provider recommended some changes to the way the storage was done to save money. Mostly, because of those changes they got hit by a surprise $30,000 bill for data egress. It was basically the last straw for a company that wasn't profitable due mostly to cloud costs. It killed the company. That's why I had to step in to try to save them.

pontifier··on The frontrunners in the trillion-dollar race for limitless fusion power
If someday it turns out my reactor could have worked, I hope history will learn a lesson from my failure to give it the chance it deserved. I'm basically at the end of my rope.
