Interesting. The missing piece for me was that invalid HEX characters parse as a zero.

Edit: Actually, it looks like they are using leet speech substitutions like "5" for an "S" which makes these a little less cool than I thought.

Have you considered sorting by saturation? And the sorting by luma/luminance seems bust with #otitis before many others.

These ones make some amount of self-referential sense:

faeces, iodide, sea, tea, ice.
