ponco··on The true costs of inflation in small-town Texas
Half the article discusses other factors? 1. staff shortages 2. very elastic customers 3. climate change.
ponco··on Elon has decided not to join our board
I think their point is that less is more.
ponco··on Prefer the British Style of Quotation Mark Punctuation over the American
I genuinely love how American, Australian, and British, English all differ in these subtle ways. I think another example that gets me is: `e.g.` vs `e.g.,` MS Word favours the `e.g.,` which I never see in Australian English.
ponco··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
Kick this mob out.
ponco··on Bungie departs from Activision
I remember listening to the Bungie podcast many many years ago right as they sold to MS. For me, the saddest part was the bastardisation of the Halo series. 343i have just never quite had the same spark.

Destiny & Activision just showed me to that the creative forces behind the Myth/Halo series were well and truly gone.

This is an exciting new dawn. Can't wait for what's next.

ponco··on Dear iPhone–It Was Just Physical, and Now It’s Over
Time spent sitting all alone

Time spent looking at my phone

Time spent sitting all alone

Time spent looking at my phone

I try to pull the curtains back

Turn you off, can't be touched

When all I want and all I know

Is time spent looking at my phone

Find me when the lights go down

Signing in signing out

Gods descend to take me home

Find me staring at my phone

I'm wondering where the hours went

As I'm losing consciousness

My sullen face is all aglow

Time spent looking at my phone

ponco··on Python's GIL implemented in pure Python
Reading the headline I couldn’t help but think “But why?”. Actually quite interesting and valuable implementation info if you’re ever doing threading with CPython.
ponco··on Ask HN: Are Chromebooks ready for serious development?
Some people still write code that is compiled.
ponco··on Show HN: Progress Bar OS X. How much % of a year/month/day has passed in menubar
Should be free, with no annoyware and offer a $5 purchase for some extra features, or simply ask for donations
ponco··on The Long, Slow Decline of BitTorrent (2017)
That is one of the most poorly written articles I've ever read. Aside from the jarring punctuation marks littered throughout, why is there a Kodi logo next to "Streaming Piracy?"
ponco··on Snap lays off two dozen employees
Perhaps it was the team that pushed out the latest UI update. Honestly, it is so bad that nearly all my friends have stopped using it for stories.
ponco··on Bitcoin ‘Ought to Be Outlawed,’ Nobel Prize Winner Stiglitz Says
That's the fundamental thing people are missing I think. Menu costs are a thing.
ponco··on Evidence of the body’s waste system in the human brain
That was exceptionally easy to digest as someone with very limited medical / bio knowledge
ponco··on Google's stance on neo-Nazis 'dangerous', says EFF
What? Aren't you making the opposite argument?
ponco··on Google's stance on neo-Nazis 'dangerous', says EFF
Slippery slope fallacy applies here I feel.
ponco··on Peter Thiel only spent 12 days in NZ before being granted citizenship
I'll take any motherfucker's money if he given' it away - Geoff "Clay Davis" May
ponco··on Alt-Wrong: The Australian right is startling for its incoherence
N.B. Pauline Hanson is a xenophobic Trump-esque politician who rose to power once again in the Australian Senate with her "One Nation" party. The Liberal Party is the right wing party of Australia, and not "liberal" in the true sense of the word by any means. The Labor party is Australia's left wing party.
ponco··on Apple joins the NFC party, providing iOS developers the ability to read NFC tags
There is no support for writing direct links as you say, but if the data is a standard NDEF URI then I believe the NFCReaderSession will return the NDEFMessage objects (code example https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44415442/nfc-tags-not-de...)
ponco··on Apple joins the NFC party, providing iOS developers the ability to read NFC tags
If anyone's wondering, the API is significantly more limited than the Android NFC API (which having used it extensively over the last 2 years I can say is very pleasant).

Still, it's better than nothing and it represents a huge opportunity for NFC tag providers (where I work). We've been waiting for this for about 4 years.

ponco··on Algorithms
While I agree "following instructions" !== "algorithm", it does serve as a decent bit of context to people who are COMPLETELY unfamiliar with computing let alone programming.
ponco··on Python moved to GitHub
Not sure about US law, but in Australia, Copyright notices are not required at all, they're granted automatically under the law and only serve as a reminder -- so it's irrelevant.
ponco··on Ask HN: Are there any startups willing to use the ASP.NET Core technology?
Can you elaborate on what you mean by Google abandoning JWT?
ponco··on Yahoo discloses hack of 1B accounts
I almost hope the data is made somewhat public so Troy / https://haveibeenpwned.com/ can get a hold of it and provide the public with reassurance.
ponco··on The Red Cross Blood Service: Australia's largest ever leak of personal data
It's worth reading the entire article and comments - very interesting. I particularly like the bit at the end discussing the ethics of the recovery - I can't decide if it is ethical or not...many sides to the issue.
ponco··on Booting the Final GameCube Game
I love that this project documents its development so thoroughly and entertainingly. I first used Dolphin 5+ years ago (craving some Double Dash) and even then I remember being intrigued about the under the hood stuff. Congratulations to them for reaching this milestone.
