pmzy··on The best $4 ever spent
OP here. I see where you're coming from and I even agree with you. I seek and like tech posts on HN.

That being said, I enjoy reading (and writing) human stories as well! Plus, it's nice to read the many stories people are sharing in the comments of this post. It shows that our community isn't as cold/ruthless as some may think :)

pmzy··on The best $4 ever spent
thank you so much for sharing your story :)
pmzy··on The best $4 ever spent
indeed! :D
pmzy··on Valve New Employee Handbook (2012) [pdf]
old school, but good. :) I remember enjoying reading this tremendously when it was released.
pmzy··on Aristotle – How to live a good life
I've never seen anything like this article. True, simple art. Really well executed.

I can't say that I agree fully with it, but knowing the virtues you want to abide to is a good idea.

pmzy··on Should you teach your kid to cheat?
Interesting take. Though, at the end of the day, it feels a bit like teaching to cheat.
pmzy··on Talking to Strangers
you're not alone my friend. That's why I think it's so important to teach it to our kids.

It can be done as an adult as well, but it requires more work!

pmzy··on Doing It Step by Step
or more that dividing a problem is a subset of this concept.
pmzy··on Attention Is a Proof of Love
You’re too kind! Thank you for saying so, it means a lot.
pmzy··on Attention Is a Proof of Love
Just because you say "People are machines though" without blinking, doesn't make it true :-) Dogs rule; but yeah they aren't people.
pmzy··on Attention Is a Proof of Love
Awesome to hear. I remember reading something a while back, saying that toddlers were developing language much slower when people use their phones around them. Because toddlers need a lot of interactions.
pmzy··on Attention Is a Proof of Love
Attention is fuel to/the source of action :)
pmzy··on Attention Is a Proof of Love
Goes without saying, yet worth pointing out.
pmzy··on Attention Is a Proof of Love
It is a skill, for sure. I still feel like I suck at it in many ways. But recognizing it is the first step to doing better. And pausing what you're doing when someone talks to you is a relatively easy thing to do.
pmzy··on The devil is intelligence without love
OP here, I agree with you. Though what I wrote doesn't contradict this; consider that the smartest is the person who knows how to play corporate politics.
pmzy··on The devil is intelligence without love
I like Bishop Barron's definition (inspired by Saint Thomas Aquinas): "Love is willing the good of the other as other"
pmzy··on The devil is intelligence without love
Do you mean as in "You shall love your neighbor as yourself"?
pmzy··on The devil is intelligence without love
I think the quote underline that if ethics isn't taught prior tech knowledge, it's unlikely to be given any importance later on. I don't take it to say that one can't value both.
pmzy··on The devil is intelligence without love
the essay is about intelligence, something we value in others. While pride is when we value our own intelligence.

I agree with you that pride is a big issue (it is, after all, a capital sin).

pmzy··on The devil is intelligence without love
yes, that. And how we often mess up the order; ethics should come first. I'd pin this comment if I could :)
pmzy··on The devil is intelligence without love
Why do we need to "outdo ourselves as the human race" though? I understand why this is a compelling core belief, but it wouldn't hurt to challenge it.
pmzy··on Ask HN: Why don't major social media introduce relationship management features?
That's a good question. I would say that, to some extend, they do with their core features. Facebook shows you updates from the people you are connected to. It also tells you when it's someone's birthday. It shows you memories.

Now, I haven't used Facebook in years and I have no idea if people rely on it at all to maintain relationships.

Several companies have tried to launch "personal crm" but none really managed to make it a thing (yet?).

My hack is to I have a project in Todoist, with recurring tasks to touch base with my friends, clients, family, etc. It also has birthdays.

pmzy··on Show HN: I made open source landing page components and templates
It looks super sweet. I got excited but then realized it was for React. Hope to see it extended to raw html/css.

Thanks for making it open source!

pmzy··on Do you take enough lucky shots?
yep, that’s the right answer I think. See what I said: big shots don’t HAVE to be disruptive like relocating the family to a foreign country. (Though many people do that every day)
pmzy··on Do you take enough lucky shots?
Thank you, friend!
pmzy··on Do you take enough lucky shots?
Fair point!

Though you can take big shots that still preserve your family. Big shots don’t necessarily have to be risky.

pmzy··on The Illusion of Productivity: Why We Are Addicted to Busyness
And what's your take on it?
pmzy··on The cost of discipline without motivation
Soul-sucking, yep. This is the correct expression.
pmzy··on Show HN: Save your words online forever - Wrytten
Congrats on launching it! I really like the idea. The issue is that, as you say, tech people may be able to do it and to not tech people, the blockchain might be too abstract.

I think the examples you give on the homepage are great.

pmzy··on Kagi and Wolfram
I’ve been a paying Kagi customer for a few months now. It has reconciled me with search. Result quality is great, and the tools like fastgpt and the summarizer are precious.

I was a bit reluctant but I don’t regret doing it.

Really happy to see Wolfram added to it!
