platevoltage··on America.gov
I just love that even the right-wing US government doesn't even want to use Grok.
platevoltage··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I mean, if I were European, I'd be avoiding American products wherever possible right now.
platevoltage··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
You find it odd that people complain less about water being used for agriculture?
platevoltage··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
That seems completely reasonable. Nobody who's laid out on THC wants to run me over with their car while I'm on my bicycle.

The fact that they drink less makes you nervous for their future? Are you serious?
platevoltage··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
At this point I think they're planning on letting Democrats sweep the midterms, having things get even worse over the next 2 years, which is inevitable, and blaming the entire thing on Democratic obstruction. Their voters are dumb enough to believe it.

AI labs buy a lot of photolithography machines?
platevoltage··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Apple provide Xcode 27's markdown editor as a separate app?
You don’t love it when you open a file that is randomly associated with Xcode and you see that icon start to bounce?

Burden of proof is on the person who made the claim.
platevoltage··on Show HN: Doom or Bloom, map your AI worldview
Same for me. Here's mine.

Every creative industry will be inundated with tasteless slop, and eventually some military somewhere will give an LLM too much privilege over defense systems. That part almost came true the other day.

platevoltage··on Show HN: Doom or Bloom, map your AI worldview
It placed me there too, and I think that's accurate.

Maybe try reading the entire post before commenting, because this was not the point of it at all.

I can't believe they're going to make the Secretary of Education learn a new abbreviation.

I don't think you know enough about me to make that assessment.
platevoltage··on Ask HN: I just talked to an AI-obsessed client, and I need a shower afterwards
Thats great. I think every form of art is very difficult to master, and that AI will never be able to do it. It can try. It can fool people, but it will never master it.
platevoltage··on Ask HN: I just talked to an AI-obsessed client, and I need a shower afterwards
This ain't it. Machines don't have taste. They try to emulate the taste of people, which creates a terrible feedback loop. This is exactly why I made this post.

I haven't lost my curiosity and passion, but thanks for your concern.

I'm sure she learned the correct term just in time for Trump to try to change it to "super-intelligence" or whatever the fuck he's doing now.

> They're experiencing what you experienced at 14. And, no offense, your Geocities site that you made at 14 was probably not very good.

Disagree. Not about the site being not very good part, that much was obvious. What I disagree about is that they're experiencing what I did. I think the equivalent would be someone who's never programmed anything, making it through their first 3 weeks of coding bootcamp and seeing something they made appearing in their web browser for the first time.

> The industry isn't being "destroyed" by AI, that started happening with PE and MBAs long before, or maybe it was fucked from the get-go, and we've been very lucky to have had well-paying jobs for typing strange things into a computer.

My rant wasn't really about the industry being destroyed. I really don't care about the industry, I care about the craft. I care that we are watching the dead internet happen in real time, and that it's being accelerated by LLMs. I live a scrappy lifestyle and can figure out ways to earn money if I can't do this anymore, I just don't like seeing the death of creativity.

platevoltage··on Ask HN: I just talked to an AI-obsessed client, and I need a shower afterwards
The difference is that these "classically trained" people are wrong. I don't think there is any historical equivalent to what we are experiencing now with LLM generated slop.
platevoltage··on Ask HN: I just talked to an AI-obsessed client, and I need a shower afterwards
I mean yeah, and I have for the most part.
platevoltage··on Ask HN: I just talked to an AI-obsessed client, and I need a shower afterwards
Yeah true, and I have. This whole thing was more of a complaint on how everything I've loved all my life is being ruined by people who put up billboards on I-80 with the same font and the same buzzwords all over them.

> Then again, coming back to the music parable, for a long time "amateurs" can make music with software tools without having any talent or even knowing musical notation or anything about tempo. Does that make them musicians?

I think it does. This is where everyone starts. Even with software tools, the music an amateur can make with them will be awful, at least for the time being. There will be no mistaking that it was made by an amateur at first listen. All software tools, and cheap hardware interfaces like Scarlet enabled was for people with talent to make music without access to a studio and 2 inch tape. Once the dopamine hits, you WANT to start learning about tempo, chords, theory etc. I've never heard of a "vibe coder" who wants to take the next step in learning what the code that they're generating means.

He's actually a very nice person who has been great to me. He just doesn't get it.
platevoltage··on Ask HN: How do you interview devs in a post-AI world?
I'm not feeling confident we will.
platevoltage··on Ask HN: How do you interview devs in a post-AI world?
I need to find another industry because this is a nightmare.
platevoltage··on Ask HN: Do you offload your coding to AI, or keep your skills sharp?
I'm one of those people that forces myself to use AI coding tools purely to stay relevant, and I tend to use them for things that are tedious for me to do manually. I'm also the type of person that will spend all day working on my car, which I could pay someone else to do it that has a lift, and could do it in 1/3 of the time. I enjoy programming, as I enjoy working with my hands, and the sense of accomplishment that it results in. That being said, I hate the current status quo, but I also don't have anyone telling me how to do my job, or how many tokens I'm expected to burn.
