I used to code for fun. Then I used to be a high-stakes patent litigator. But I hated that, so now I am an engineer. And I still code for fun.

My read of this is that it shouldn't affect pi.hole given the system's default nameserver would still received by DDNS and thus be the pi.hole? Or do these requests go somewhere that's hard-coded?
pkilgore··on Ask HN: Why Is Stack Overflow Fading Away?
IMO when the attitude went from nurture to kill wrt to possibly duplicate questions.

I wish that rather than close a question you were only allowed to link an answer from what you thought was the duplicate and that just becomes another voting game vs. moderator opinion.

Also I suspect a little bit: LLMs aren't dicks, and you can ask them follow up iterative questions quicker than SO users respond.

It's nice. Look into the composer. I like it much better than inline completions.

For security reasons you cannot use some of the features in this code without setting a specific header (the blog mentions this).

The sandbox has a button that's basically "Open a preview in a separate tab". If you click that, the header will be sent, and the demo will work.

If you only use the "in-editor" preview, the proper header will not be sent.

Agree not intuitive. Hope it helps, it was a super cool demo.

You're probably still healthier than most of the country if you have a Third Class.

According to the FAA airman registry he was flying on BasicMed (less strict than third class, but comes with loss of certain privileges).

Holy shit, when I was doing litigation these databases would be my wet dream.

I might seriously quit my job and start a discovery consulting / tech company just for targeting these databases.

pkilgore··on Launch HN: PointOne (YC W24) – Automated time tracking for lawyers
Interesting, and definitely something I might have paid for when practicing. Too many 1am nights cleaning up my billing...

But are you sending data outside my machine for processing? Some asshole is going to argue I waived privilege. We all know that's bullshit but convincing my firm to pay for this without very specific words in the contract around your access rights to the data would make this a non-starter. And that seems to vary state to state.

Good luck! Great use of an LLM.

0.8% of the 23-24 operating budget

An interesting article might point out that if 1000 more students and highly qualified workers join UVA because of this support structure, it might even pay for itself.

This article is clearly uninterested in analysis, it's just trying to make people mad about a thing that the Republican party in the United States is attempting to make a campaign issue this year.

What the hell is it doing on HN?

pkilgore··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
We are telling you that simulation of those things, particularly their effect on a pilot physically experiencing the physics of them, is so far from what you feel in a real plane.durieg high stress moments of flight so as to be nearly useless to preparing for the real live stress you are under.
pkilgore··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
I'd say this post is a really good example of the diff between sim and real plane.

Trim feels academic in a sim. Your stick is so light, it feels like a tiny convinience. But in a badly trimmed real plane you arent flying as much as arm wrestling.

A good pilot understands that they-the fallible human-are usually the most important component in a plane. Wrestling with the elevator for two hours on a cross country is one great way to ensure that pilot is not operating at full capability. Hell, its a great way to ensure you are behind the plane from the very first moments of takeoff in some planes.

Its so obvious in real life as to be undebatable. Trim the plane! The academics of AoA are irrelvant to an exhausted pilot.

I do this occasionally, and especially with things like test tables. Linters/formatters are there to help in the common case, not to be some oppressive dogma.

Widely rationalized as the government has finite resources, so there's a better deterrence effect of going after prominent entities and persons vs. randomly selecting bad actors.

IMO this is good. The biggest and most elite among us should be held to a higher standard than a random guy on the street or a small business, not a lower one.

Westley Snipes, Donald Trump, Hunter Biden, Amazon, Tesla, ExxonMobile, Amgen. I sorta want everyone and anything in that class of society on their best behavior at all times, lest the reins of government fall to a Party with reasons to make an example out of them. Unlike most, they have the resources to make it a fair fight too.

pkilgore··on 40 years ago yesterday Air Canada Flight 143 ran out of fuel mid-flight
I'm wildly curious if you know more about this particular point in time, but knowing Vg of your plane and being able to perform (and know when to perform) a forward slip to land is something most pilots today learn before they ever fly solo, much less get a license that permits them to fly passenger jets.

Struggling to see what glider knowledge applies here (other than, perhaps, glider pilots slip to land more frequently since it isn't like they have power to remove).

pkilgore··on What planes can you fly without a pilot’s license?
Flying into meaning literally inside. You can fly among them in VFR assuming you meet minimums for the airspace (3SM visibility, 1000 above, 500 below, 2000 to the side in most areas of the USA).

I have only been in actual instrument conditions once with an instructor who was certified to do so under and instrument flight plan. It's disorienting. It's turbulent. Its impossible to avoid other planes (IFR the tower keeps you separated).

Crosswinds and rain and landing are basically boring after a few tens of hours. But fuck clouds.
