I used to code for fun. Then I used to be a high-stakes patent litigator. But I hated that, so now I am an engineer. And I still code for fun.

pkilgore··on Tapo (Rust/Python library) now speaks TP-Link's TPAP protocol
I was always taught: Read good books, that's how you'll write.

I don't even really care AI or human if its written like this. I would rather do anything else than continue reading.

pkilgore··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
It lawfare against porn. They don't want these companies to exist. They want it to be impossible to comply with the law to shut them down.
pkilgore··on Leaderboards and speedrun.com's new terms of service
Whoa. Does this prohibit things like Summoning Salt documentaries with the data too?
pkilgore··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
And that's great! It's what I meant by some brains being wired exactly right for it. I can recognize it as being very right for some people! But something about it was very wrong for me, and clearly many others. I wish I understood it.
pkilgore··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Ha! Yeah, I probably got the soul/game bit backwards. I'm not a game developer so I don't know the specifics but I've never seen something so damn ambitious pulled off to the extent I've seen in NMS for my brief interactions with it.
pkilgore··on Cognition launches new SWE-2 model, Rivaling Fable 5.1 and GPT-Astra
Not sure it matters when devin is the most consistently shit product I've used. And yes, I tried again, they wasted the money on the billboards.
pkilgore··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
NMS is an amazing game with no soul. A metaverse. A monument to technology without the depth or people or narrative (prewritten or emergent) that makes it interesting.

I'm certain there are some people whose brain is wired exactly right to love it.

But I have more fun playing the n100th Call of Duty clone hearing real voices on the headset in a tight, fun game loop.

But the company behind it deserves to be applauded. Might be the best value for money / care / support of any game, especially one so poorly received initially...

pkilgore··on Porting my 1993 Amiga game to Godot, with an LLM reading the 68000 assembly
This was an interesting read, in that it was obvious both that Claude was used in part for the prose but that a human had definitely edited some of the worst claudish out of it (but not enough for me to be able to tell).

Confirmed in that last paragraph. Just interesting to me I can detect gradations of AI speak at this point.

pkilgore··on Any Human Ever – One life, drawn at random from all who have ever lived
This site is pure slop?
pkilgore··on EPA says power for data centers can sidestep pollution laws
Well the one thing I know about lawyers:

Utterly impossible to get them to write a dishonest guidance document interpreting the law in a way that benefits them somehow.

You got me. Check mate. No counterarguments here.

pkilgore··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
That isn't the marker of AI.

Avoid antitrust scrutiny with this one weird trick.
pkilgore··on Executable Is a SQLite Database

pkilgore··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
Thanks for that Sid Meier quote: I think this is a really good explanation of why I bounce of Anno games hard and love other similar, more pure, sims!
pkilgore··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
I love Kagi but will probably be selective or ignore this one. Sometimes, I like to know what's out there, and I don't have a problem with paying for good content.
pkilgore··on Linux 7.2
What about this is more interesting than the LWN coverage?
pkilgore··on The August 17 outage

Cool

pkilgore··on MicroGPT-C in pure C hits 10M TPS on Apple M5
Honestly not sure this is impressive. I ported microgpt to zig as a learning exercise, then moved scalar engines to NEON/metal just to see what happened. Besides metal being slower (I probably did something wrong, but it could be due to the fixed costs of memory transfer into the GPU not being worth it due to the small model).

Anyways, it was also stupid fast, particularly compared to the python version. But I was pretty sure that's irrelevant to real production architectures!

pkilgore··on Incident with Github.com
Name names.
pkilgore··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Didn't EVOKE fail at the primary endpoint of reducing dementia?

Sure, they hit a fucking surrogate, that's sometimes interesting for additional research.

But we have incredibly strong clinical evidece oral semaglutide did not significantly reduce clinical progression in patients with early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease.

pkilgore··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Amen
pkilgore··on Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt
Flawless, completely unnecessary abstraction is a better tell of LLM code than "comment clearly responding to a part of a prompt that I cannot see".

pkilgore··on The solution might be cancelling my AI subscription
AI is great for programs but every product ever kinda sucks if you don't understand a lot of things computers are pretty bad at, generally.
pkilgore··on Anthropic surpasses OpenAI to become most valuable AI startup
Sure, none of this is rational.

Some of its timing: Claude Code was good before other harnesses and so behaviors (and contracts) were timed to lock in on that ecosystem.

Some of it was ethical/political: Anthropic fighting with the Trump admin about use of the model.

Some of it is social: Never overrate a CEO just being kind of perceived as a piece of shit by people who have power to influence decisions.

But switching costs are low! Because of the same models!

Let the race to the bottom commence. Hopefully before the monopoly/collusion starts.
