pjfin123··on LibreTranslate – “Building the coolest translation software ”
Yes translations pivot through English.
pjfin123··on Socrates’ Examined Life
If you're interested in classical philosophy this YouTube channel (Daniel Bonevac) has high quality recorded philosophy lectures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkHDwe_kfS8
pjfin123··on Gen Z is going to have a hard time getting rich
Because Business Insider says so?
pjfin123··on Cinder: Instagram's performance-oriented fork of CPython
For anyone curious about the detailed history of Python interpreters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdJ9BxgRpOY
pjfin123··on Cinder: Instagram's performance-oriented fork of CPython
What's the difference between this and PyPy? They're both JIT/performance oriented Python interpreters?

Good to see more work on this front! It's seemed crazy that Python can be this popular but still not be nearly as fast as it could be.

pjfin123··on Charm delivers Stripe's carbon removal purchase ahead of schedule
Purchasing this type of carbon removal potentially has a massive second order effects if it helps encourage big unit cost reductions like what happened for solar. The Collinsons have talked a lot about creating the conditions for progress so I wonder how intentional this is.
pjfin123··on Depends on Every Package in NPM
Left pad your strings, no import necessary!
pjfin123··on How People Get Rich Now
> fund managers discovered new ways to generate high returns, and more investors were willing to trust them with their money.

Is the first part of this true? Most funds underperform the S&P.

pjfin123··on uBlock Origin works best on Firefox
Great write up! I hope Brave can improve on this.
pjfin123··on EFF's reply to cease-&-desist letter – “Virtual Coachella” parody video
These are awesome
pjfin123··on Apple can own I/O to own the universe
I was more responding the the "zombie OS" comment then the profits idea. I think I basically agree.

>For instance the zombie OS Android has great value to Apple because if it didn't exist then antitrust regulators would be at Apple's throat

pjfin123··on Apple can own I/O to own the universe
People in upper middle class U.S. circles have a very skewed perception of the popularity of iPhones (almost everyone has them). The vast majority of mobile phones in use worldwide run Android.
pjfin123··on Google’s copying of the Java SE API was fair use [pdf]
Yay!
pjfin123··on Myanmar orders wireless internet shutdown until further notice: telecoms sources
I wonder what difference satellite internet like Starlink will make in future situations like this.
pjfin123··on Seats filled for first all-civilian spaceflight crew
Fun tangent, Russian cosmonauts had pistols to defend themselves from bears and wolves in the Siberian wilderness: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TP-82_Cosmonaut_survival_pisto...
pjfin123··on Why no Easter Eggs? (2005)
I switched from Windows to Linux, Easter eggs were not the reason.
pjfin123··on Why did Alibaba's Jack Ma disappear for three months?
Are there any good news sources for following/understanding what's going on in China? Reading the state media has obvious issues but reading defector media also isn't going to represent how most people in China actually think.
pjfin123··on GPT Neo: open-source GPT model, with pretrained 1.3B & 2.7B weight models
I interpreted it as aspiring to a trillion paramters but I'm not sure.
pjfin123··on GPT Neo: open-source GPT model, with pretrained 1.3B & 2.7B weight models
GPT Paper:

"Specifically, we train GPT-3, an autoregressive language model with 175 billion parameters"

README:

"1T or bust my dudes [...] An implementation of model & data parallel GPT2 & GPT3 -like models, with the ability to scale up to full GPT3 sizes (and possibly more!)"

It seems the largest model they released is 2.7 billion parameters or ~0.01 the size of GPT-3. The most interesting part about GPT-3 was its size and it seems this is only "GPT-3-like" in architecture.

I also have a translation library with ~100 million (0.001 GPT-3) parameters:

pjfin123··on Flatpak – a security nightmare – 2 years later (2020)
I don't have anything against Flatpak but maintain a Snap package and think Snap has made a lot of good design decisions even if it still has rough edges. For a basic application it's pretty easy to package for Snap. A lot of the things that bother Linux power users like polluting their mounted file systems wouldn't matter to regular users. My understanding is they support either pre-declaring permissions or requesting them at run time.

pjfin123··on What’s up with these new not-open source licenses?
Most open source licenses are themselves permissively licensed. Your probably fine copying any major open source license into your project.
pjfin123··on What’s up with these new not-open source licenses?
The difference between not giving back to open source and over grazing is not contributing to open source doesn't actually hurt other. It's just not helping others.
pjfin123··on Tusky has been removed from the Play Store
Discovery is definitely the hardest part of the fediverse. Your best bet is to join a server with similar interests and start following people.
pjfin123··on Open Source clones of popular sites (e.g. Airbnb, clubhouse)

pjfin123··on Vitalik escalates ETH 2.0 merge as miners plan a 51% attack
I think the Ethereum Foundation owns the trademark.
pjfin123··on Some Schools Are Blocking Replit to Prevent Kids from Coding
In fairness we used a similar service in high school to bypass all other filtering. I wrote a script to setup a remote desktop server on the VM they gave you and then run a web remote desktop client. Unfiltered internet unlocked!
pjfin123··on Crypto and NFTs are a absolute disaster for so many more reasons than ecological
> Ethereum “has been moving” to proof of stake for almost as long as it has existed. It has been so long that “Eth 2.0 PoS Coming Soon!” is something of a running joke.

Ethereum seems to very much be in the process is switching to proof of stake but we should ignore that because of the author's gut feeling it's a "joke"?

pjfin123··on The Art of Reading More Effectively and Efficiently
I think I've learned a lot more from Wikipedia rabbit holes than a lot of books I've read.
pjfin123··on DigitalOcean S-1
Please add GPUs! Google cloud and AWS's interfaces are hard to use. I recently discovered vast.ai which is great but cheap DO GPUs would be more trusted/professional (even if they only had one option).
pjfin123··on Ask HN: Any startups solving for software engineering hiring?
Not having to go through dozens of companies crummy web apps to enter the same information that's on your resume would be a start.
